12 PM

Running 20:00 intensity: (9 @0) + (45 @1) + (3:13 @2) + (15:53 @3) 2.79 km (7:10 / km) +24m 6:53 / km
ahr:156 max:173 shoes: X Talon 212s

Osbornedale was the next State Park, so we walked to the top of the hill, jogged for 20 minutes, then wound our way back over the hill again. Rob joined me again, it was nice. Ridiculously muggy out there.

Saturday May 30, 2015 #

Note

Slept for 12 hours last night, mostly straight through. I am either still fighting the cold from the lab (which is possible, Nicole was really sick for 3 weeks - maybe it was flu, and Dan was home sick again yesterday, so there's definitely stuff around) or I have done too much again. Either way, cycling, short runs and short core for a little while. Meh.

Cycling 1:00:00 [1]

Cycling into work, to the Farmer's Market, then back home with a full bag of goodies.
7 PM

Running 20:00 intensity: (50 @0) + (38 @1) + (43 @2) + (2:56 @3) + (9:25 @4) + (5:28 @5) 3.19 km (6:17 / km) +35m 5:57 / km
ahr:177 max:198 shoes: X Talon 212s

Rob joined me for an easy jaunt around Lake Wintergreen. It felt totally fine at the time but look at that heart rate! Wonder if my monitor is just broken. Throat is scratchy now, afterwards.

Just looked at the HR track - has to be broken, right? That kind of pattern makes no sense unless something is very badly wrong.

Cross Fit 13:19 intensity: (8:07 @0) + (1:41 @1) + (3:31 @2) +1m
ahr:108 max:141

Freeletics was actually dead short today. This was mostly stretching afterwards. HR looks more normal for this.

Thursday May 28, 2015 #

Note

Good to see WCOC now how some skin in the game when it comes to the massively crowded Republican Nomination race! First credible candidate to officially announce?

Wednesday May 27, 2015 #

4 PM

Running 1:00:20 intensity: (19 @0) + (4 @1) + (1:40 @2) + (21:52 @3) + (33:41 @4) + (2:44 @5) 9.98 km (6:03 / km) +111m 5:43 / km
ahr:175 max:194 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Run home. Felt pretty stiff and clumsy the whole way, though was better in the woods. Still not 100% clearly. It was also very muggy. Still, 10k without much effort (or fun).
6 PM

Cross Fit 26:13 intensity: (8:29 @0) + (17 @1) + (1:45 @2) + (15:24 @3) + (18 @4)
ahr:141 max:177

Freeletics work out Some standing up things that I need to do a lot of work on!

Tuesday May 26, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Took a rest day. Feeling more normal again.

Monday May 25, 2015 #

10 AM

Orienteering 13:51 intensity: (40 @0) + (2 @1) + (6 @2) + (6:44 @3) + (6:19 @4) 2.36 km (5:53 / km) +13m 5:43 / km
ahr:169 max:185 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Hanging the smooth lines course. I am immune from lava.

Orienteering 11:17 intensity: (47 @0) + (4 @1) + (18 @2) + (5:28 @3) + (4:40 @4) 1.76 km (6:26 / km) +38m 5:48 / km
ahr:168 max:178 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Hanging the raised vision course. It was a better course than I expected for that purpose.

Orienteering 19:48 intensity: (15 @0) + (30 @1) + (52 @2) + (18:11 @3) 3.09 km (6:24 / km) +25m 6:10 / km
ahr:157 max:171 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Hanging the read the full leg course in the wrong order.

Orienteering 31:29 intensity: (1:52 @0) + (12:33 @1) + (16:58 @2) + (6 @3) 3.15 km (9:59 / km) +35m 9:28 / km
ahr:133 max:151 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Hanging the prologue. Had to scrap a leg because I planned it somewhere that apparently wasn't allowed. A lot of problems with this course, it wasn't as good as I expected.
12 PM

Orienteering 18:56 intensity: (3:38 @0) + (8:00 @1) + (4:26 @2) + (2:38 @3) + (14 @4) 2.67 km (7:05 / km) +83m 6:08 / km
ahr:133 max:175 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

And finally the final. This was a much better course. I was hot by the end but less tired than I expected.

Sunday May 24, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Despite feeling better by the end of Saturday I completely failed to sleep and so I sat out today in favour of sorting out the garden with Rob. It was lovely.

Saturday May 23, 2015 #

11 AM

Orienteering 59:40 intensity: (1:54 @0) + (1:10 @1) + (2:52 @2) + (25:42 @3) + (25:56 @4) + (2:06 @5) 6.61 km (9:02 / km) +200m 7:50 / km
ahr:169 max:193 shoes: Integrators 5000

Jogging around the O'tervals at Mountain Lakes as I still felt off. My jogging pace is stronger than it has been in a long time, so this was more fun than it might have been. My HR was too high, definitely a little off colour.
2 PM

Orienteering 51:53 intensity: (16 @0) + (32 @1) + (5:35 @2) + (42:08 @3) + (3:22 @4) 5.18 km (10:01 / km) +141m 8:49 / km
ahr:161 max:177 shoes: Integrators 5000

Jogging around the flow course at Westmoreland. Lovely area in places, a bit overgrown in others. Started to feel physically better towards the end, like the illness fuzz had lifted.

Running 11:18 intensity: (2:34 @2) + (7:30 @3) + (1:14 @4) 1.36 km (8:20 / km) +79m 6:27 / km
ahr:159 max:182 shoes: Integrators 5000

Very easy jog back. HR still high I guess.

Wednesday May 20, 2015 #

Note

You know sometimes you feel physically awesome the day before you wake up actually sick? Hmmm.

Tuesday May 19, 2015 #

6 PM

Intervals 36:38 intensity: (35 @0) + (1:21 @1) + (3:16 @2) + (21:58 @3) + (7:49 @4) + (1:39 @5) 5.68 km (6:27 / km) +8m 6:24 / km
ahr:164 max:200 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Today I ran the fastest I have run in years. The same interval set as last time, but on the indoor track as I still have two more weeks of membership remaining. It's much better to run on a track with a set goal and no traffic, then you can focus on form and striding out. I surprised myself by actually enjoying this.

39, 41
1.25
38, 38

I can add an extra interval now.

Monday May 18, 2015 #

10 AM

Running 10:46 intensity: (16 @0) + (21 @1) + (52 @2) + (2:01 @3) + (4:56 @4) + (2:20 @5) 1.87 km (5:46 / km)
ahr:176 max:199 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

The car needed longer than we had planned (a whole 1.5 days!) in the shop, so I had to go pick Rob up. Except I left my glasses in our car, so I ran to the Zipcars closest to Veronica's house, borrowed her glasses (we have an identical prescription!) and then went to get Rob. Drove a few blocks without glasses which I felt okay about as I could see more without mine from out of the lab window than Dan can see with his driving legal glasses. Slightly worrying.

This sudden turn of "speed" through the middle of Yale Commencement did not feel good.
11 AM

Recovery 43:06 intensity: (10:15 @0) + (7:07 @1) + (19:16 @2) + (6:28 @3) 5.04 km (8:34 / km) +38m 8:15 / km
ahr:133 max:158 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Then thought I would recovery run back from the Zipcar so I wouldn't wimp out today. Felt fine. Joe Biden popped in the say hello right at the end, which was pretty exciting.
7 PM

Cross Fit 33:23 intensity: (9:42 @0) + (14 @1) + (4:59 @2) + (17:38 @3) + (50 @4)
ahr:142 max:176

The Freeletics after walking home with Rob.

Sunday May 17, 2015 #

Note

Slept most of the afternoon. Meh.

Saturday May 16, 2015 #

8 AM

Running 20:06 intensity: (1:02 @0) + (36 @1) + (1:13 @2) + (2:54 @3) + (13:19 @4) + (1:02 @5) 3.39 km (5:56 / km)
ahr:172 max:193 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Neighbourhood trundle. It did not feel good. For this reason, and that fact that the rear suspension of the car was making a very suspicious noise, I decided to to drive anywhere this weekend. Sorry to miss two excellent meets.

Thursday May 14, 2015 #

Note

I am totally shattered. I think it's because I slowed down after the crazy month that ended a couple of weeks ago. Going to continue taking it easy this week, then maybe try 20 minutes of running every day from Saturday. There is a horrendous cold going round the lab too and I am all stuffed up, perhaps it's a bit of that aswell.

Wednesday May 13, 2015 #

Note

We got a grant! For my stuff! A small development grant, but a grant nonetheless. Might even be able to afford an actual experiment if I talk nicely to our guys at the sequencing centre.

Tuesday May 12, 2015 #

Note

Meh! I didn't work too long either day so far but I still felt whacked by the end.

Sunday May 10, 2015 #

Orienteering 1:13:15 intensity: (50:00 @3) + (23:15 @4) 6.8 km (10:46 / km)
shoes: Integrators 5000

Thoroughly enjoyed an outing to Mashomoquet Brook today. An old map that has aged pretty well (you can tell it's a cmorse) and a pretty physical course with some exciting laurel bashing. Hit it lucky the first time through on the way to number 5 by doing a big trail banana and stealing a fastest split from Carl, but then hit it badly on the way back through. Chose not to cut corners across places where the map had clearly not been surveyed, that was a good idea too. Forgot my watch so if anyone wants to see my routes, I can hand draw it later.

Felt awful before running, itchy throat and bad stomach. But felt much better whilst out. Not flying aswell as previous weeks, but very happy given how I felt beforehand. Definitely getting fitter.

Then went to the Vanilla Bean Cafe after a recommendation from JHen - delicious! I took a look at all the healthy options and went for the enormous plate of nachos with their famous chili. It was awesome. I only ate about a third of it though! Excellent recommendation. Then a stroll round Old Furnace State Park, but I was a bit tired and it was a bit hot for that really.

Saturday May 9, 2015 #

8 AM

Long run 1:42:50 intensity: (44 @0) + (1:00 @1) + (3:24 @2) + (49:30 @3) + (48:12 @4) 16.14 km (6:22 / km) +176m 6:02 / km
ahr:170 max:189 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Woke up earlyish and had to spend an hour or so in work, so ran the long way. It's less fun this way - big hill at the start and then slowly descending into city nastiness, rather than steadily leaving it behind.

Friday May 8, 2015 #

Note

And to bed. What a disaster. The SNP bring hope and terror all at once. What happens to Northern England now? We're screwed.

Note

"Woken up" just in time to see both Clegg and Miliband go. I have barely slept. I am worried for my country's position as a united country and as a member of Europe.

The future of publicly funded science in this mess? Who even knows.

Let's hope the American public have more sense than the British in 18 months time.
8 AM

Running 44:56 intensity: (7 @0) + (1 @1) + (1:51 @2) + (13:52 @3) + (22:37 @4) + (6:28 @5) 8.07 km (5:34 / km) +63m 5:21 / km
ahr:176 max:201 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

I ran into work to get rid of anger. Felt bizarrely okay for having had pretty much no sleep. Passed a guy who asked me to slow down and had a brief chat, apparently his LGBT friends back in the UK think the election had the best outcome for LGBT people. Are they completely crazy?
4 PM

Cross Fit 41:24 intensity: (21:42 @0) + (2:59 @1) + (3:02 @2) + (12:08 @3) + (1:33 @4)
ahr:128 max:178

Some exercises.

Thursday May 7, 2015 #

Note

Well I'm not going to sleep tonight. This is an astounding and terrible car crash.

Wednesday May 6, 2015 #

Note

Mega work life balance fail. I suck. At least I am cycling!

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

Commute.

Tuesday May 5, 2015 #

Note

Eddie! With the onset of heat over the last few days almost every tomato plant has new green growth! Yey! They may survive after all!

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

To work and back. I did do something token this week!

Monday May 4, 2015 #

6 PM

Recovery 43:32 intensity: (1:18 @0) + (12:03 @1) + (24:33 @2) + (5:38 @3) 5.56 km (7:50 / km) +41m 7:33 / km
ahr:139 max:168 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Rob joined me for an early evening recovery run at West Rock and it was lovely! I did better at not working too hard today, but still stayed half an hour too long.
8 PM

Cross Fit 32:50 intensity: (13:05 @0) + (6:36 @1) + (10:23 @2) + (2:46 @3)
ahr:124 max:158

Back to Freeletics. 4 sets of 50 press ups, 20 sit ups, 50 squats. Press ups were hard, the rest just filler. Then stretchy time.

Sunday May 3, 2015 #

Note

I have been working too hard. For Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the lab I got around 15,000 steps per day without any training. Too much time on my feet, most of it actually good and really productive, but leaving me physically exhausted. This isn't how Becky work. So the aim for next week is to cut back, work normal work hours, not run quite so many parallel experiments, and get other things done too. Going to ditch Payne Whitney membership as getting there is just another barrier to doing stuff, and use Freeletics. Will try to run to work more. It's that time of year when I don't have to carry 6 millions layers to do that, so it should be grand!

Have had a lovely weekend so far, mostly getting errands done and pottering in the garden in the sunshine. Going to Nipmuck State Forest today, to revisit the run I did with Zan (last year/the year before?), but this time walking with Rob.

My feet still hurt though from being stood up all week. But everything else feels better.
