Note

I think I will do a week of 4 mile of so runs then restart my eight week program. Got pretty sidetracked there!
3 PM

Running 48:15 intensity: (22 @0) + (25 @1) + (5:03 @2) + (41:37 @3) + (48 @4) 6.52 km (7:24 / km) +171m 6:33 / km
ahr:158 max:176 shoes: X Talon 212s

Ran around West Rock while Mum and Dad took a walk up to the ridgeline. Pretty stiff from the efforts of two days ago, happy to get out. Very cold!

XC Skiing 2:10:00 intensity: (1:30:00 @1) + (40:00 @3)

We went XC skiing! Alex's suggestion of Prospect Mountain was bang on, and we turned up to a very soggy car park and strapped on some rental skis and gave it a try. The snow was very actively melting but the trails were perfect for our level of skill and we had a great time. A slow first lap with everyone then a slightly faster and trickier lap with Dad and Rob after lunch. Lunch was Bagel Bombs from Folly bakery, which come with a very very strong recommendation!

I ate too many nice baked products and chocolate today and sneaked out for a boring run just before dark.

O' training at Brooksvale. Did a green course from 2010 - was definitely at that meet but not sure which course I did. Added an extra control pick at the far end in an area that looked nice - it started nice but got a bit overgrown halfway through. Shortly after a successful pick I got caught in the Brooksvale triangle and did a nice banana, but otherwise navigationally good.

A bit frustrating in that while general running is obviously improving at quite a pace, I still feel like I'm trudging in the woods. Perhaps it's because I haven't done much in Zone 4 yet, which is I think where most orienteering used to take place. Got a wee bit annoyed with my body today, which is silly because it's doing a lot better than it was six months ago.

Long run 1:10:58 intensity: (20 @0) + (28 @1) + (10:30 @2) + (53:41 @3) + (5:59 @4) 10.41 km (6:49 / km) +210m 6:12 / km
ahr:161 max:185 rhr:49 shoes: X Talon 212s

Felt awful on waking but RHR was fine, as was temperature, so decided to run just before dark. Felt great as soon as the legs got moving and really enjoyed being out there. So either I'm just dealing with the tail end of all the stress of the last few weeks or today is that day just before you get properly ill where running feels amazing and effortless. Hopefully the former!

Two days till the family arrive!

Would anyone like to really quickly plan me a course at Brooksvale for tomorrow? Doesn't have to be a good one, a five minute effort is awesome. OR actually if you have a map file from an old meet that would also work well.

E mail me at becky dot carlyle at gmail dot com if you need a map file...I probably have one...

Note

I think yesterday may have hurried up the sickness! Sinus headache and snuffy nose today.

Edit: Just in time for the holidays, of course!

Note

What's the best combination of ski trails for beginners and actual snow in a week's time that's closest to New Haven? I was hoping for some proper snow here for when everyone's over but that doesn't seem likely - so we could drive to VT next weekend and stay overnight somewhere for a little bit of winter.

Tempo run 53:04 intensity: (20 @0) + (54 @1) + (6:52 @2) + (29:36 @3) + (15:22 @4) 8.84 km (6:00 / km) +104m 5:40 / km
ahr:164 max:188 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Decided to sack it and try running today. My throat got drier and drier during the run but the tempo bits didn't feel too bad. Guess I'll find out tomorrow if it was a good idea or not.

Wednesday Dec 17, 2014 #

Note

Slept for 11 hours last night - obviously needed it because only woke up once. Still don't feel great this morning but I'm hoping coffee and last minute grant editing will wake me up.

Note

Meh. Is it the weekend yet?

Tuesday Dec 16, 2014 #

Note

Just get sick already! I can feel the thickness in my sinuses and my throat, I'm really tired, and after I marked all my exams this morning I had no energy to do anything else. Want to get sick and not be in this in between stage, which I've clearly been in since the weekend.

Monday Dec 15, 2014 #

Note

This weekend was a total bust, but I think I needed it.
8 AM

Recovery 48:44 intensity: (28 @0) + (2:15 @1) + (43:20 @2) + (2:41 @3) 7.07 km (6:53 / km) +57m 6:37 / km
ahr:142 max:153 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Recovery run in this morning - felt not very good and HR crept up to 70% very easily compared to last week. Hmmm...
5 PM

Cross Fit 42:36 intensity: (25:24 @0) + (5:07 @1) + (5:25 @2) + (6:30 @3) + (10 @4)
ahr:122 max:176

Feeling better by the evening and went to the gym. Did some cleans but they don't have full size 10# plates, so cleans are hard. I will never get to cleaning 135 if I can't practice lower weights at the right height! Grrr. Then lots of leg raises too. Legs pretty jelly by the end.

Saturday Dec 13, 2014 #

Note

Today was not meant to be. We went out and hacked down our Christmas tree, then I banged my head on the window sill as we were sorting out the room to fit it in. Then I made soup, sat down to eat it, and threw the entire thing over my thighs. It was exceptionally painful and I spent most of the afternoon/evening will ziploc bags of cool water on my thighs. The swelling has just about subsided now and it has left four blisters, but much smaller than I feared. I decided not to try to do anything else today as a result.

Hills 58:47 intensity: (1:32 @0) + (5:05 @1) + (11:37 @2) + (38:47 @3) + (1:46 @4) 8.84 km (6:39 / km) +99m 6:18 / km
ahr:152 max:181 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Run to work with 4 x 1 minute hills on the way. Felt pretty rough, did some strides, felt pretty rough on rep 1, pretty awesome on the rest.
9 AM

Cross Fit 50:38 intensity: (27:25 @0) + (7:21 @1) + (5:29 @2) + (10:23 @3) 1.22 km (41:22 / km)
ahr:124 max:168

Payne Whitney is much better at 9.30am than 5pm. I did some front squats, then 5 sets of thrusters, man makers and small box jumps (very small) focusing on fast rebound.

Running 56:16 intensity: (36 @0) + (26 @1) + (11:01 @2) + (44:13 @3) 8.87 km (6:21 / km) +96m 6:01 / km
ahr:155 max:173 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Felt pretty tough out there this morning. Fine on the downs and flats, very slow and rubbish on the ups. Still, in the bank!
5 PM

Cross Fit 43:10 intensity: (26:08 @0) + (8:50 @1) + (5:47 @2) + (2:25 @3) 1.59 km (27:13 / km)
ahr:117 max:164

Rob came to the gym with me and it was much better today! We also warmed up on the indoor track and they have Rogue pull up bars down there! Yey! The gym just got significantly better. We did some squats, some leg raises, some press ups, some pull ups, and some lunges.

Tempo run 52:29 intensity: (17 @0) + (5 @1) + (3:38 @2) + (35:16 @3) + (13:13 @4) 8.84 km (5:56 / km) +103m 5:37 / km
ahr:167 max:188 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

I skipped the gym today but I am very proud of making it anywhere near training. Foul weather all day, frozen ground, some ice rain, mostly normal rain, and freezing standing water everywhere. I tried to do tempo but it was a bit of a bust, all the downhill trails were raging torrents of very cold water and so my usual routes were not as fast as usual. Still, HR was above 175 most of the tempo time so not too far off. Happy just to have actually managed to train.

ahr:139 max:152 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Ran home after a long day of annoying writing and planning and not doing experiments. Felt surprisingly good. It was very cold.

Long run 1:11:14 intensity: (23 @0) + (38 @1) + (12:34 @2) + (57:39 @3) 9.42 km (7:34 / km) +252m 6:40 / km
ahr:157 max:174 shoes: Integrators 5000

Given it's just round the corner, I drove up early towards Charlie's to do a decent sized loop round the next State Park, Nassahegan. Despite the extreme sogginess of the day, had a very nice outing in some beautiful woods. I'm not quite sure why the DEEP makes it so difficult to find out about this place, because it was really great in a lot of places. Upper legs felt tired but body didn't feel too bad aside from them.
5 PM

Orienteering 40:28 intensity: (8 @0) + (7 @1) + (49 @2) + (33:41 @3) + (5:43 @4) 3.69 km (10:58 / km) +88m 9:48 / km
ahr:166 max:181 shoes: Integrators 5000

Pretty good showing for a RHINO. Got stonkingly disorientated at number 6-7, but otherwise pretty steady and okay. Legs a bit stiff from earlier on, but felt more confident out there in the laurel than I have before. Then an excellent evening of fun and laughter followed by a dreadful drive home. I wish they had in road reflectors for nights like this.

(rest day)

Definitely rest day today.

Running 50:45 intensity: (32 @0) + (2:43 @1) + (6:38 @2) + (39:00 @3) + (1:52 @4) 8.83 km (5:45 / km) +84m 5:29 / km
ahr:156 max:185 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Thought I might bail today then didn't, and enjoyed it a lot. A pre sundown run with two 1 minute hill repeats near the end. The second felt much better than the first.
5 PM

Strength 31:44 intensity: (13:35 @0) + (7:41 @1) + (4:14 @2) + (6:14 @3)
ahr:127 max:166

Eurgh, Yale gym. It will hopefully be more fun when Rob joins me. They do at least have kettlebells, but nowhere to do pull ups if you are short with short arms.

Wednesday Dec 3, 2014 #

9 PM

Running 29:32 intensity: (24 @0) + (2:17 @1) + (13:26 @2) + (13:25 @3) 5.03 km (5:53 / km) +43m 5:38 / km
ahr:147 max:165 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

I did an Ian again. After a horrible day mostly spent listening to other people talk at length or hunched over a computer, I finally finished planning my Section at 9.30pm and realised I had to do something because I felt horrible. So an easy three miles around the neighbourhood. My legs weren't that happy but my brain appreciated it. Sleepy now.

Tuesday Dec 2, 2014 #

Note

Today I don't want to be a grown up! Why is it always Tuesdays?!

Tired this morning, tried to sleep in but Rosie sat on my head. Will try for the run just before dark, after an afternoon of hunching over the microscope.
3 PM

Tempo run 48:58 intensity: (48 @0) + (46 @1) + (12:37 @2) + (25:11 @3) + (9:36 @4) 8.6 km (5:42 / km) +99m 5:23 / km
ahr:158 max:185 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Had to try very hard not to bail on this session. Took some time out mid afternoon and hit the trails at the bottom of East Rock for 2 x 5 mins tempo. Ran it pretty well, aside from the last 30 seconds of the first rep when I was assaulted by a very confused small dog who then sprinted across Whitney. I have no idea how it didn't die. The owners appeared about 20 seconds later, desperately chasing it. No idea what happened but I hope they found it and calmed it down. I started off being scared of being bitten then when it sprinted off it was obvious there was something wrong with it.

Recovery 10:06 intensity: (14 @0) + (26 @1) + (5:25 @2) + (4:01 @3) 1.61 km (6:17 / km) +11m 6:04 / km
ahr:145 max:155 shoes: Shiny red Sauconys

Was too far away from my target destination of the gym, where I managed to register with nasty man's very helpful assistant, then when I got out it was cold so I jogged back to work. Have felt mildly nauseous all afternoon and hope it's just from first harder running in a while and not some bug. Dinner didn't make it worse so hopefully nothing serious.

Monday Dec 1, 2014 #

8 AM

Running 43:10 intensity: (6:19 @0) + (27:27 @1) + (9:24 @2) 6.44 km (6:42 / km) +48m 6:28 / km
ahr:139 max:154 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Phase 1 complete! Phase 2 starts today with a recovery run. That felt fine but I've felt worse and worse during the day and am a bit worried I am getting ill. Early night tonight and I hope that will sort me out. I don't think the crazy weather changes are helping.
