Running 52:28 intensity: (3:32 @1) + (16:04 @2) + (9:18 @3) + (23:34 @4) 8.87 km (5:55 / km) +169m 5:24 / km

Was a bit scared about this one! Went for a run with Claire once the sun came up and it was pretty tough for me. Still, good chat got me most of the way round and I eventually made it up Blackford although there was a bit of walking. I'm appreciating having running partners, and it was interesting to be the unfit one for the first time in a very long time. Thanks Claire!

Yey! Run with Kir! Up to her flat and then up to the top of the Seat, which we managed to time perfectly so we hit the top during the 10 minute horizontal hailstorm. Fantastic to be out again with a very old friend.
4 PM

Running 7:26 intensity: (31 @1) + (1:10 @2) + (5:45 @3) 1.44 km (5:09 / km) +10m 4:59 / km
ahr:158 max:167 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Back from Kir's until I got warm, then I walked the rest.

Kate persuaded me out for a run on a soggy morning. Time went quickly with plenty of gossip, and despite a couple of mishaps on the way back down a soggy Blackford Hill, we were at the Co-op before we knew it.

Running 33:04 intensity: (3:34 @1) + (6:50 @2) + (21:47 @3) + (53 @4) 5.9 km (5:36 / km) +58m 5:20 / km

Quick touristy jaunt around Edinburgh when we arrived on the train. Man, have I missed this place?! Despite the rain and wind it was great to be out. I tried to do today's WOD when I got back, but the heart wasn't really in it, and I carried a heavy bag for ages so that'll do!

Running 36:19 intensity: (3:09 @1) + (6:11 @2) + (24:32 @3) + (2:27 @4) 5.76 km (6:19 / km) +113m 5:45 / km
ahr:160 max:181 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Soggy run to the waterfall and back. I've now almost run the whole 360 degree circle from home, mostly on paths, and it's really pretty cool. One last section to do tomorrow. The weather is clearing a little and there was actually some blue sky today, but it's still exceptionally muddy on the ground.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Running 31:59 intensity: (7 @0) + (44 @1) + (1:30 @2) + (25:48 @3) + (3:50 @4) 4.68 km (6:50 / km) +124m 6:02 / km
ahr:166 max:179 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Up on the moor. A bit of a view today and not actually raining yet. I love being up there. Still incredibly muddy.

Cross Fit 16:40 intensity: (5:05 @1) + (3:49 @2) + (7:38 @3) + (8 @4)
ahr:149 max:175

Woo, tough. 50 squats, rest 2 mins, 10 press ups and 10 squats thrusts 5 times every 90 seconds, rest 2 mins, 50 lunges, 25 burpees. Really hurt!

Sunday Dec 23, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Accidentally slept all the way through my free time today, then spent the rest of the day drinking mulled wine and doing jigsaws with my lot and Rob's parents at their place. That's what holidays are for!

Saturday Dec 22, 2012 #

2 PM

Running 34:18 intensity: (1:00 @1) + (7:48 @2) + (21:46 @3) + (3:44 @4) 5.25 km (6:32 / km) +172m 5:37 / km
ahr:162 max:180

I had forgotten what it was like to run constantly in 3 inches of squishy mud. The answer is pretty fun, but soggy. Lots of dog walkers out today to my surprise, as it was a rotten day. Many stops for overexcited animals. Bumped into Verity and Jim at the end and had a quick chat.

Cross Fit 10:31 intensity: (30 @0) + (6:07 @1) + (3:46 @2) + (8 @3)
ahr:135 max:157

3 x 2.30 (1.30) AMRAP of 10 squats, 10 sit ups, 10 press ups. This is not as much fun as actual classes.

Friday Dec 21, 2012 #

2 PM

Running 32:34 intensity: (39 @1) + (1:32 @2) + (20:16 @3) + (10:07 @4) 5.32 km (6:07 / km) +174m 5:15 / km
ahr:168 max:184 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Lovely run round St Ives. It's not changed much, although they have cleared some rhododendrons. Great to get the legs moving after a week of work and travelling.

Cross Fit 9:48 intensity: (36 @1) + (1:50 @2) + (4:49 @3) + (2:33 @4) 0.19 km (51:51 / km) +5m 45:48 / km
ahr:164 max:180

"The apocalypse" body weight work out. Shuttle runs, broad jumps, sit ups, press ups, squats, pretend skipping and some more bonus press ups for good measure. You can tell it's being a while.

Is it wrong that I'm ridiculously excited about going to Sainsburys?

Note

Eeeeee home! Walked from Camden to the Embassy in the pouring rain, and got breakfast at the Honest Sausage in the middle of Regents Park - lovely surprise. Sausages are on my top ten missed foods list, and pretty near the top at that. The Embassy was a 3 and a half hour wait this time, and yet again my interview took less than one minute. But it's all approved and should hopefully be back in time. Wandered back via Vodafone to get a Sim card, and the guy in the shop was really great and made me smile. Then walked back from King's Cross and got totally soaked by a manic white van man, and had to have my second shower of the day. Then headed out with Mhairi to meet Helen and Cerys and Ben and had a wonderful evening of chat and giggles. It's been way too long. It's so good to be back!

Note

Talk in New York done, grants both almost done. House is a disaster zone mess, no clean clothes, and will be leaving to JFK on the last train tonight. Go!

Sunday Dec 16, 2012 #

Note

Next draft of grant done. Group Christmas party now. Hopefully better than Friday night when no one was in the mood for a party, everyone arrived late and got angry at us for not saving them space (the place had been full for thirty minutes by that time) and we were so upset by everything that we left after another ten minutes.

Thinking about it, it would have to try hard to be much worse.

Saturday Dec 15, 2012 #

Note

Almost done for the holidays! Just my own grant to refine now and perhaps a bit more figure fiddling. This has not been a fun Saturday. Walking to Starbucks was a major highlight.

Friday Dec 14, 2012 #

7 AM

Running 47:29 intensity: (16 @1) + (4:15 @2) + (35:03 @3) + (7:55 @4) 8.44 km (5:37 / km) +130m 5:13 / km
ahr:167 max:179 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Into work all the way to Starbucks, given I haven't done much else this week. It was cold, and all the inflatable Christmas figures were shrivelled in despair on the ground, which made me giggle. Hamstring is still bothering me, particularly uphill.

Wednesday Dec 12, 2012 #

10 AM

Running 30:26 intensity: (1:03 @1) + (3:29 @2) + (24:15 @3) + (1:39 @4) 5.42 km (5:37 / km) +102m 5:08 / km
ahr:162 max:178 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Went a different way to East Rock, it was nice but hillier. My hamstring is still very stiff, but it felt good to do something.

Tuesday Dec 11, 2012 #

Note

Yup, brain has decided I'm done for the year. Unfortunately I'm really not.

Monday Dec 10, 2012 #

Note

Meh. Many to do, very tired, not much motivation left. I am giving myself a free pass on doing stuff till I get home.

Cycling 30:00 [1]

Out on the Farmington Canal trail to test out my new bike! Rob and I drove all the way to New Jersey yesterday, to pick it up, as he bought it on ebay. I was very excited. Believe it or not, I've never actually ridden a road bike before, so this was an easy cruise to try it out. I was wobbly and my sore shoulders from Cross Fit meant it felt a little strange. But it's really cool and the commute will be much faster once I'm used to riding it. Eeee!

3 PM

Running 30:47 intensity: (7:06 @1) + (10:24 @2) + (13:17 @3) 5.61 km (5:29 / km) +51m 5:15 / km
ahr:151 max:173 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Easy round the neighbourhood before dark. Meant to drive to West Rock but grant writing ran away with me...Still a bit stiff from last week's Cross Fit but feeling a lot better than last night.

Event: RHINO 5

6 PM

Orienteering 40:23 intensity: (10 @0) + (1:00 @1) + (1:29 @2) + (27:51 @3) + (9:53 @4) 4.38 km (9:13 / km) +136m 7:59 / km
ahr:168 max:185

Wowzer, you can tell it's been a long time since I did Night O. No distance judgement, poor confidence and generally hesitant. Lucky for me I had an enormo light and the reflective tags were super bright, so there were only two times when it really came apart. The first was at a7, where I felt like I'd gone forever but had actually only gone about 50m, so I faffed around at the first path instead of the second. The second time I crossed a path without realising and went too far east, was running a long a kind of trail that stopped in a big marsh. Eventually realised and had to go back out to AP and reattack, then it worked fine. Lost a lot of time there though. A lot of fun out there, it's a shame we don't get more chances to get out in the woods at night, but I'm still scared of bears.

Edit: Must have been running slowly, as lost more on control 9 extra loop then AP thinks I lost altogether!

7 AM

Running 30:37 intensity: (1:17 @1) + (5:44 @2) + (22:59 @3) + (37 @4) 5.43 km (5:38 / km) +93m 5:12 / km
ahr:160 max:176 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Running towards East Rock. Hamstring a bit niggly. Not amazing.
4 PM

Cross Fit 40:04 intensity: (16:24 @0) + (15:57 @1) + (2:47 @2) + (3:47 @3) + (1:09 @4)
ahr:114 max:182

Pairs workout number two. Rob was here today and you did 30 secs AMRAP kettle bell swings (35#), 30s box jumps (20), 30 secs rowing, then rested while the other person went. Three times each. Went up to intermediate weight on the kettlebell and it was significantly harder to retain form than with the 26#. Nice way to end a Friday, after a successful yet somehow still frustrating week.

Cycling 34:21 intensity: (4:14 @0) + (27:50 @1) + (1:24 @2) + (53 @3)

4 PM

Cycling 35:23 intensity: (6:22 @0) + (28:09 @1) + (50 @2) + (2 @3)
ahr:111 max:155

Back home. Interrupted a racoon party. Five of them having an amazing time in a garden. It was great.

Cross Fit 47:36 intensity: (17:01 @0) + (17:07 @1) + (4:05 @2) + (8:54 @3) + (29 @4)
ahr:121 max:180

Ashley, Jason and Dana came to Cross Fit for Bring a Friend Day. I paired up with Ashley and after lots of drills and things we did a 12 minute AMRAP of 10m bear crawl and 6 press ups. You rested while your partner did theirs. We got through 16 reps each, which was pretty good. Ashley was great. Fun session. Afterwards we were playing around on the bars and I KIPPED MY FIRST PULL UP! Yey! I get to join the Pull Up Club now!

Very easy jog towards work. I was achey. And now I'm extra sleepy tired. Early night.

6 PM

Cross Fit 1:10:57 intensity: (32:39 @0) + (27:13 @1) + (1:59 @2) + (4:25 @3) + (4:41 @4)
ahr:108 max:184

Today did not go well. I needed things from other people and they were not timely (I always enjoy the annual physical, where I get to sit awkwardly in a small locked room wearing only a paper waistcoat while the too busy doctor eventually gets round to seeing me) and it dragged on and on. So instead of the planned run home I got a lift with George to Cross Fit, then ran home. The workout was fun - some deadlifts which was alright, then 3 sets of 50 double unders (16 continuous is my new record, yey!), 15 sumo deadlift high pulls (53#) and 25 back extensions (eurgh). Thought I'd done pretty well at 12.09. Dan did advanced weights in 6.30. Wow!

Running 30:30 intensity: (1:49 @1) + (4:06 @2) + (23:39 @3) + (56 @4) 3.7 mi (8:15 / mi) +40m 7:58 / mi
ahr:161 max:178

Rob drove me to a lit road with a pavement to run on and I ran home. It felt horrible to start with, back was definitely tired, but it eased up and improved by the end. Had to wait ages to cross roads, and sat in a squat at them to stretch out the back.

Monday Dec 3, 2012 #

Note

Eurgh. I don't want to go to work today! Edit...and that was before I saw my inbox :(
10 AM

Cycling 34:06 intensity: (51 @0) + (31:17 @1) + (1:37 @2) + (21 @3)
ahr:124 max:160

Cycling in. Gorgeous morning, shame I was heading for a day of DOOM.

Cycling 25:00 [1]

Cycling home from meeting at Science Hill. Day of Doom was actually worse than expected, got nothing at all done, but at least it ended with a meeting resulting in me being able to teach tutorials next year. Win.
4 PM

Running 30:27 intensity: (6:00 @1) + (9:09 @2) + (15:18 @3) 5.72 km (5:19 / km) +70m 5:01 / km
ahr:152 max:167 shoes: Darth Vader sauconys

Almost bottled, didn't. Yey! Feeling a bit weird and wobbly, think there were a few too many stress hormones floating around today.

Cross Fit 3:51 intensity: (1:53 @1) + (1:06 @2) + (52 @3)
ahr:141 max:160

Not up for Cross Fit, so did their body weight at home workout post run. 50 air squats, 50 sit ups for time. 3.08. Harder than it sounds.

Sunday Dec 2, 2012 #

Note

Which of the OROCs should I be getting for Christmas for normal North East style forests? Cristina, I guess you should know this one. I want metal studs for sure.
9 AM

Orienteering 40:34 intensity: (6 @0) + (6:53 @1) + (8:53 @2) + (20:33 @3) + (4:09 @4) 3.8 km (10:41 / km) +119m 9:14 / km
ahr:157 max:182

Put out some streamers for Bill, Charlie and Earl. The first slope was very damaged from Sandy, but the far side of Osbornedale is lovely as ever. I was in a bit of a rush and fudged one - all the chaps were on the ball enough to figure it out before I could go move it. Good work guys! Despite still feeling stiff from the Filthy Fifty, I noticed this interesting thing in my legs today, especially going uphill, called strength. It was pretty cool.

Orienteering 32:42 intensity: (2:29 @0) + (28:45 @1) + (1:28 @2) 1.46 km (22:25 / km) +51m 19:05 / km
ahr:116 max:150

Earl and I did the line course. After a shaky start, Earl improved faster than I have ever seen anyone improve, and was sounding like a planning ahead ninja by the end. Very impressive. I did alright at my bits, but I still lack confidence on the slopey bits at the end.
