Short jog with Kat. It was hotter than I thought outside, and I felt rubbish. I was going to extend it longer but my throat was all dry and I wasn't having fun, so I didn't.

A lovely walk to the highest top in CT with Rob. He set quite a pace and it was actually relatively hard work. I carried all the water for the workout, and came to the realisation I was carrying the extra weight I've lost since Christmas. Moving was harder then. Beautiful day, hot but not humid, with excellent sandwiches and ice cream from Salisbury.

On the principle that something is better than nothing, a little joggeroo home from work with period pains from hell. Saw Rob at work so did a little loop then walked home with him. Either the temperature is better or I am adapting.

7 PM

Running 44:09 intensity: (26:54 @1) + (7:33 @2) + (3:20 @3) + (4:37 @4) + (1:45 @5) 7.16 km (6:10 / km) +75m 5:52 / km
ahr:141 max:187 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Easy run round Lake Wintergreen with Boris and Rob after walking the Tiger dogs. They are cute but rather silly balls of fluff. One of them did a poo full of string, which looked difficult. At the end of the run Boris and I did two tempo efforts along the straight flat track - my second felt much better than my first. Almost quick in fact. Fun, especially as it was another mid afternoon wanting to bail kind of day

Edit: looking at the track, number two was actually the quickest I've run in a long time. Yey!

Running 1:14:54 intensity: (9:51 @1) + (13:56 @2) + (50:45 @3) + (22 @4) 7.42 mi (10:06 / mi) +182m 9:23 / mi
ahr:151 max:173 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Really nice run at Maltby with Boris. Lovely and cool, plenty of deer out and about. This is not actually all running, as we rescued two lost children and walked them back towards the road near the end. They were the first people we've ever seen out at Maltby, so it was pretty lucky we found them! We then grilled burgers, made salsa, and I got scared of komodo dragons. Great evening.

Running 1:20:00 intensity: (2:12 @1) + (2:42 @2) + (58:36 @3) + (16:30 @4) 7.55 mi (10:36 / mi) +415m 9:03 / mi
ahr:164 max:178 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

We had a lot of chores to do today and so we'd booked a Zipcar for the full 24 hours. Luckily we finished them super quickly which left me with loads of time to drive to West Rock and explore some new trails. Not quite sure why they built a road no one uses all along the top of the ridge - popped on and off this as the blue was dead rocky and slow, and kept getting fed up of crawling on it and worried I was going to break my ankle with absolutely no one around. Felt more confident when I hit familiar ground on the other side of the rock, and plain sailing from there. It was just over an hour before I saw a person out, which was pretty crazy for a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.

Edit: could follow these trails for way longer and do a proper long run. Need to take water and give this a try!

Running 39:41 intensity: (2:38 @1) + (3:09 @2) + (18:34 @3) + (15:20 @4) 6.65 km (5:58 / km) +156m 5:20 / km
ahr:163 max:180

I did the running thing! Just a little bit! It was tough, but maybe not as tough as I expected it to be.

In more cat related news, my very old cat from back home is currently in kitty hospital after my Dad accidentally ran him over (he's a little too sprightly for his old age, and was clearly visible one second and not the next). He now has a pin in his leg and is recovering well, eating plenty of food and becoming the Nurse's favourite with all his purring. He's an amazingly resilient animal, with no teeth, a fall out of a third storey window, and an earlier RTA behind him. He's now almost twenty years old.

Running 55:04 intensity: (2:23 @1) + (7:22 @2) + (12:44 @3) + (21:54 @4) + (10:41 @5) 5.94 mi (9:16 / mi) +90m 8:51 / mi
ahr:168 max:190

Jordan's super fun orienteering intervals. We've had a lot of fun over the last few days and I did his sprintervals session this evening once he'd left. Really tough, legs a little DOMsy and hot (but not too humid), but much more fun than normal intervals. HR got plenty high too. Having made the map I didn't fall into any traps, but I'm also not sure I took the best route on maybe three of the controls. Only one of these was because of scaffolding. Fun!

Would Arthur just f**k off already? I love starting Monday morning with an argument that ends with me being called unprofessional. Which is precisely what I'm being now. But I don't care anymore.

Back to the gym to work off the awful stress tension from today. Great to shift some weight about and teach some small Hispanic children how to not dislocate their shoulders on an incline bench. They were very impressed at how much more they could lift when their angles all lined up.

3 x 10 of Shrugs, squats (90lb), pull ups (-35lb), CGSLDL 65lb, 2 x 30s normal plank, side planks, 2 x 30 sit ups plus obliques on incline, 3 x 10 press ups.

Done by the end, but much happier. Should get back to the gym more often. It makes me happy.
6 AM

Running 1:20:17 intensity: (8:24 @1) + (50:32 @2) + (21:21 @3) 7.0 mi (11:28 / mi) +291m 10:09 / mi
ahr:146 max:161 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Early morning easy 7 miles round East Rock. It was not easy, it was HOT! My stomach was also whinging a lot of the time, as it tends to do after a few days of inactivity. Still, glad to get the legs moving. Either clockwise round East Rock is much slower, or I was really slow this morning. Could be either!

No sign of full out cold, but I am headachey and sleepy enough to not go to the mythical Trout Brook with the super training kids today.

In other news, our apartment is totally set up apart from the kitchen Island Stenstorp. Photos will be posted!

Friday Jul 15, 2011 #

Ru oh. Today I will mostly be feeling like I'm getting a cold. Poo face.

Edit: Feeling worse as the day goes on. Think I'm just exhausted. Going to sleep for ever tonight. Mmm.

ahr:162 max:182 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Evening run round East Rock, starting with Boris and Kat and finishing with just Boris. My legs are moving without pain but they are still pretty dead. Luckily Boris had plenty of good chat and the time passed quickly. Gorgeous evening. Now, shower and food!

Tired today but my legs almost work again. Got into work for a busy day to find someone had switched off my heatblock overnight. I have no idea how long my incredibly precious samples have been heated for, they have been at room temperature for an undetermined amount of time...not only do I now have nothing to do this morning, but a really serious experiment might be completely wasted. Grrrr.

Edit: samples fine, finished prep at 10.35pm. Bleurgh.
10 PM

Running 22:41 intensity: (1:01 @1) + (3:17 @2) + (18:23 @3) 2.57 mi (8:49 / mi) +28m 8:32 / mi
ahr:153 max:166 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

It may not be much, but I'm proud of getting out today. A run home from the lab, at 10.40pm. The air was wonderfully cool and clear though, and it was great. All the muscles that stabilise my left ankle and knee are sore. Everything else is pretty much recovered now.

Running 50:07 intensity: (2:35 @1) + (10:42 @2) + (28:18 @3) + (8:32 @4) 5.25 mi (9:33 / mi) +214m 8:28 / mi
ahr:159 max:179 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

The forecast for today is gross, and I have a dentist appointment at 9, so I was out the door at 6.30 this morning, and very proud of myself. Did 30 mins of 90 (30s) with a warm up jog before and after. The reps weren't all out, just mini wind ups. The wind ups felt better than the rests. My legs are still wrecked :) It was really gross even at 6.30 in the morning, so I'm glad I'm done for the day now.

I can hardly move my legs today. Eep!

Recovery jog in the evening with Rob. It was a bit stop start and I forgot to restart my watch at one point. It was very sweaty and my legs hurt a lot. Hopefully they will feel better tomorrow.

Running 1:22:20 intensity: (18 @1) + (2 @2) + (26 @3) + (13:30 @4) + (1:08:04 @5) 7.54 mi (10:56 / mi) +562m 8:52 / mi

I did a race! It was mostly fun. After persuasion from Sam and SGB I decided to do the Skyline as part of our weekend in Boston. It was a very early start, and my tummy was complaining, and I was a bit worried about how to race, as I'd not really done anything like this before. 7.5 miles ish, some steep rocky climbs, and some quite technical trail. I went out at cruisey pace and picked up places all the way up and down the first hill (I have never been the best descender back home, but today I was way better than all the guys around me!), then settled with a group of four guys. They would pull away with their extra strength uphill, but then I would catch them on the downs. The toughest part of the race was the slight incline on the big trail, my legs felt like jelly here and I wasn't really going anywhere. The final hill was also hardcore, I was nearly sick at the top. I finished second lady, but Sam was ridiculously far ahead (indeed, she beat most of the men). She really is astonishing. Still, this time last year that would have taken me at least twenty minutes more I think, so I'm on the up! And my HR hasn't been that consistently high in a very, very long time.

Afterwards we had a nice picnic, once we found an undemolished supermarket, and then drove all Ross & Sam's furniture back to New Haven where Boris helped us get it all up the stairs in return for Wings. Good day.

Saturday Jul 9, 2011 #

Today we spent a few hours plundering Ross & Sam's apartment, had a cracking post plunder meal at Chipotle, and then returned to Mini Golf. This time I got my nemesis hole in 4, which was a great improvement, but the holes in ones eluded me. Overall I was 8 less than last time, which I think is pretty great. There is the disclaimer that I was still last by a very long way though.

ahr:161 max:179 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Test run. I am ridiculously stiff from too much time sleeping and sitting, but my pulse seems about okay. It was cooler today but ridiculously humid, making for an unpleasant trip all round. I think I am correct that all this tiredness is in my head and not my body though. Boo.

Still meh today. Being the tennis ball in a Supervisor tennis match is not helping. I hope the new guy wins.

Wednesday Jul 6, 2011 #

Sniffly and very tired today. Taking it easy a bit. Not sick but almost.

Tuesday Jul 5, 2011 #

I feel like crap today. Another very long lab day - I've almost done 4 days work this week, and it's only Tuesday!

Monday Jul 4, 2011 #

7 AM

Running 52:52 intensity: (2:35 @1) + (33:56 @2) + (16:21 @3) 5.0 mi (10:34 / mi) +151m 9:40 / mi
ahr:146 max:157 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Easy 5 miles before work. The squirrels were fighting like crazy out on East Rock today, lots of exciting noise and kerflufling. When I got to just outside work there was a lady driving across an intersection whilst curling her eyelashes. Road safety first people!

Sunday Jul 3, 2011 #

Today it was uber muggy and I was uber weak. Poor show.

Saturday Jul 2, 2011 #

5 PM

Running 48:00 intensity: (8:26 @1) + (11:37 @2) + (19:47 @3) + (8:10 @4) 5.2 mi (9:13 / mi) +102m 8:42 / mi
ahr:151 max:183 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Rob joined me for the first half of my run, and then I ran into the lab to reunite the mouseys. We walked for a minute or so near the end. It was stuffy out there today, but I am getting way better at running in it. Happy to get out after a very lazy day sorting out admin stuff at home (stupid visa stuff - thought it looks like I may not have to leave the country to do it - fingers crossed!).

Friday Jul 1, 2011 #

Running 45:17 intensity: (48 @1) + (11:12 @2) + (10:19 @3) + (22:58 @4) 5.0 mi (9:03 / mi) +246m 7:51 / mi
ahr:164 max:184 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Last night I was doubting my ability to do this session, what with the early start required and the DOMS. But I jumped straight out of bed and did the business, and it was great. Warm up, three "brisk" miles, then warm down. Brisk bits didn't feel light and easy but did feel strong, and there was a lot of uphill. The view from the top of East Rock was stunning, and it was a beautiful clear morning. Lots of other runners, including one young guy coughing like crazy that made me annoyed.
