Strength 45:00 [2]
slept:6.0

A bit of a cheat this one, but carrying a bag weighing about 35kg along the slidiest mud track in the world certainly felt like a strength session, and my sore shoulders and abs after would seem to be testament to that!

Cycling 45:34 [2]
ahr:98 max:142

Various cycling around town, was tired and hence sloooow.

Running 50:42 [3]
ahr:153 max:175 slept:7.5 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Owwwww. Had to drop Jeff off for his MOT at Sighthill then decided to run to work from there. Legs were fucked, and I was tired with little energy having only eaten half my breakfast (was saving the other half till I got into work post run. Think I will take the bus back out there, a mingy run through shitty bits of town too until I hit the Water of Leith.

Can't decide whether to take my running kit to the music festival this weekend or just have a final rest weekend before starting the autumn build up.

Cycling 18:58 [2]
ahr:108 max:147 slept:8.0

Hmm. That was the most horrendous cycle to work ever, about 6 minutes of it must have been spent at red lights or stuck behind cars in bus lanes blocking the whole road. The morning cycle is supposed to relax me and wake me up, not leave me arriving at work in a huge angry ball of rage. Got to try some different longer routes I think!

Cycling 23:08 [2]
ahr:105 max:141

This time I sneaked through to George Street and went over the bridges - started well but soon got just as bad as the morning. Down to Grassmarket on Thursday I think (have to drop Jeff off for his super expensive MOT etc tomorrow so will probs just run into the lab afterwards.

Hills 1:04:46 [5]
ahr:153 max:188 slept:8.0 shoes: Shiny silver integrators

Whoo! After a grey day the evening turned lovely and I hit the Seat for what was supposed to be 30 mins of 90 x 30s and was so awesomely fun that it turned into 40 mins going up to the top of every proper hill on the Holyrood map. The last rep by Dunsapie Loch up that hill was totally maximal, actually couldn't move for a minute after that. Awesome. Good strides and nice 10 min warm down at the end. Brilliant.

Stretching 8:58 [0]
ahr:97 max:142

Good stretch on the grass by the Seat. Left bum cheek still tight but better than yesterday. Left knee a bit sore after the session but better than yesterday, and no pain whilst cycling today either. I'm going to make a huge effort to stretch properly from now on, though we'll see how long this lasts once the nights and rain draw in.

Cycling 55:00 [2]
slept:6.5

Miscellaneous cycling around town as I sorted out the final bits of moving out of Polwarth. To the Council office from new place then there and back aghain as I am a retard and left my old parking permit on the mantelpiece, then to Polwarth, four hours of cleaning which yup, you've guessed it, Will arrived exactly at the end of. His timing couldn't actually have been more "comic" if comic is what you call four hours of lone floor scrubbing on your knees.

Now my shoulders hurt and I am thoroughly fed up of moving, but all is fine, as I don't have to do it anymore! Whooo! I am so charging Will for professional cleaning at competitive rates...

Cycling 22:00 [2]

Bleurgh, new cycle home is horrible as expected, traffic heavy and hilly. Wil have to search for a quieter longer alternative I think!

Recovery 47:07 [2]
ahr:132 max:152 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Recovery run around on the Seat - so good to be close by again! Got most of the way up the hills below 70% and lovely views. Yey! Knee still a bit wobbly though.

Stretching 10:00 [0]

Good stretch in the garden where I bemused Roger the dog greatly. Our new garden is huge and pretty and I love it. And Roger the dog. He likes trying to knock me over when I do one legged stretches. Yey for him.

That's what I meant to say, I have a very tight left bum cheek! Maybe this is something to do with the knee twinge. I stretched it lots and will continue to do so.

Orienteering 1:04:26 [4] ****
ahr:160 max:182 spiked:18/22c slept:9.0 weight:57.9kg shoes: Shiny silver integrators

Yey! Thanks to the combined genius of Tullie, Jess, CK Coombs and a slightly poorly Jeff we had a fun day orienteering today! Drove to Elibank in the borders which started out as a lovely runnable wood with some nice rounded countour detail a la Lithuania, before getting more and more brackeny at the top of the hill which led to eventual abandonment of the last 5 controls as I couldn't see over the bracken to interpret the gorund shape! Lovely day, navigation was flowing beautifully in the bits it was actually possible to flow in (I bet even Simone has to walk every other step through bracken dead thick and a foot over her head), and was planning ahead well and taking good legs. Strong up the hills despite the fact that left knee is still twinging a little, will keep an eye on that one.

Strength 1:00:00 [3]
slept:4.5

I officially really really hate moving. This weekend has been the best of the year, and I feel like I've spent the whole time lugging boxes up and down stairs. While this is good for my core stability, I'd rather be running up a mountain somewhere up north. I was also hungover and it was a very very long day and I am:

a) not drinking more than 4 drinks in a night from now on
b) not whoring myself out to members of the public using jam tarts as lures anymore in the name of Black Tape.
c) so close to killing Will it's untrue

Note
(rest day)

Rest day to try and see if the knee felt any better. Nice sunny walk to work and back.

Cycling 14:50 [2]
ahr:121 max:155 rhr:40 slept:7.0

Did my resting HR after feeling slightly crappy by the time I got to bed last night at 1am thanks to seeing SONIC YOUTH play DAYDREAM NATION. Amazing! But yes, then I got up and cycled speedily to work to miss the smallest amount of WOC coverage possible.

Two Finnish golds, a draw after 80 minutes! Mental! What a race!

Cycling 21:12 [1]
ahr:96 max:127

Sore knee feeling really sore so cycled at a snail's pace back home and going to rest up tomorrow. My last walk into work from Polwarth, nice!

Cycle to work, just the usual. No sun though today!

Cycling 20:58 [2]
ahr:112 max:152

Cycle up to George Sqaure being stopped by ever traffic light in the history of the world ever.

Recovery 45:00 [2]
ahr:134 max:149 slept:7.5 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Nice recovery run up onto the Seat, along the top of the Crags and then halfway up the hill on the opposite site of Hunters Bog and back to the lab just in time for my hour of incubation to be up.

Cycling 13:35 [2]
ahr:104 max:140

Cycle back to the lab, traffic lights mostly liked me this time.

Cycling 17:28 [2]
ahr:113 max:151

Cycle back home.

Cycling 37:00 [2]

Cycle to Tullie's and back for the committee meeting. Went out of my way a bit on the way home to try and pace Kir to get her to her train on time - dunno if it succeeded or not! Looong meeting.

Cycling 15:07 [2]
ahr:121 max:149 slept:8.75

Fitful night's sleep for no apparent reason last night, but still woke up refreshed at 7.30 and headed into work feeling good.

Cycling 15:40 [2]
ahr:120 max:152 slept:8.75 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Cycle up to George Square.

Intervals 51:42 [5]
ahr:150 max:201 slept:8.75 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Decided to do intervals today as it was sunny, I felt energetic, and I had an hour's incubation time to kill at George Square. This turned out to be a good idea and was the best sessiomn I've done in ages. Stomach no better than usual but being daytime I could use the loos post strides and hence mingingmess held off till the end of the session, and decided to do a fun pyramid of 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 800, 600, 400, 200. Times as follows:

Warm up with strides: 18.51

33 (90), 1.16 (90), 1.56 (90), 2.27 (90), 3.34 (90), 2.34 (90), 2.00 (90) 1.16 (90), 33 (90)

As you can see struggled a little just post that fast km, but then regained my legs for the last couple. Great session, especially as done totally by myself!

Cycling 15:20 [2]
ahr:118 max:149 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Cycle back to George Square, needed to get rid of some serious lactate post intervals.

Cycling 18:56 [2]
ahr:114 max:146

Cycle back home, legs feeling fine, bonus!

Running 18:08 [2]
ahr:149 max:162 slept:11.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

I must be sleeping too much this weekend! Another day of total lack of motivation, grey skies and being uninspired. This time though I managed to force myself in the direction of the gym, figuring I could get tomorrow's weights session in and hence not have to get up early tomorrow, and do a bit of cardio on those silly machines whilst catching up on the Hollyoaks I missed. So this was the run in, pretty easy like. Feeling fine when I'm running, just being stubborn and don't want to.

Strength 1:08:17 [3]
ahr:115 max:162 slept:11.0 weight:58.6kg shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Weights session - heavy. Did really good long warm up as left knee still seems to be complaining a little despite plenty of hip flexor and quad stretching. Then session was:

Snatch from hip 25kg 4 x 5 (Getting better and faster with a closer base)
Split jerk 25 kg 4 x 4
Back squat 60kg 4 x 5
DB Row 16kg 3 x 10
DB Shoulder press 9kg 3 x 10 - this was one hell of a struggle!

Intervals 20:54 [3]
ahr:137 max:165 slept:11.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Then went to the cross trainer to do some intervals, but switched on the TV to find that instead of Carmel sitting weeping in her pink velour tracksuit (the most tear jerking moment on British TV this year, I'm pretty sure) Big Brother was actually occupying all of the channels that may have been showing Hollyoaks. So after 20 minutes of Europop goodness I got bored and sacked it and ran home instead. Just can't get my heart rate high enough on these things for them to be of much use.

Recovery 17:14 [2]
ahr:154 max:162 slept:11.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Easy run home, legs feeling, still generally fed up though after the intiial being pleased at my improved snatching faded away. Boooored.

Note
slept:7.0 (rest day)

Today is just a non starter of a day. Pissing with rain, I'm tired, I have no motivation, and I'm about to hit the sofa for a rather rare bout of television watching. I just want some sunshine, then I can sit in the Meadows and natter with people and read a book. This has been the worst "summer" ever.

Edit: Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves is just about to start on TV. Amazing!

Recovery 32:44 [2]

Nice easy recovery run round Craiglockhart. Legs and everything feeling fine but a bit detached, think I'm tired. Lie in tomorrow, yey!

Cycling 1:09:32 [3]
ahr:104 max:152 slept:7.0

Just four short cycles, to work, to George Square, back to work, then home. Not as tired as expected but in a rush to get out in the evening so didn't train.

Wednesday Aug 15, 2007 #

Cycling 15:38 [2]
ahr:118 max:151

Cycle into work, pretty routine.

Cycling 17:49 [2]
ahr:111 max:149

Cycle to George Square, feeling pretty dead legged and slow.

Circuits 46:24 [3]
ahr:117 max:155 slept:8.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Pretty hasty core/balance session at the Pleasance in my hour of alpha screen incubation time.

Ankle hops 2 x 6
Power skip 3 x 6
Low hurdle jump 3 x 6
Long jumps 2 x 4
Box jump 3 sets
Olympic moves 20kg 3 sets
Walking lunges 15kg 3 x 10
Pull ups 3 x 10
Candlesticks - running out of time so did 3 sets of 5 there and back instead od 3 sets of ten one way.

Bit rushed, more tired by the end than I should have been. The absence of crazy/irritating gym types on Monday was more than compensated for today by a very scary lady doing her own circuit in her head. 1000 yard stare, not eaten in months, continuously exercising the whole time I was there but doing every exercise really badly, breathing like on the edge of orgasm and generally frightening everyone in the place. Actually a mentally. Go out, get drunk, laugh at something and remember what it is to be human please. Terrifying.

Cycling 13:55 [2]
ahr:111 max:150

Cycle back to the Western

Cycling 17:13 [2]
ahr:118 max:147

Cycle back home...good day at work!

Running race 44:16 [5] 9.0 km (4:55 / km) +200m 4:26 / km
ahr:183 max:190 shoes: Integrators

My first ever hill race! Okay, so it was more cross country than hill, with only a small amount of climb, but the fact that I turned up, ran up that hill, then a very long way along the flat on the way back is huge step for me! No idea whether I did well or badly, just know I really wanted a map on the final flat 4km to know when it finished - totally wrecked by the end! Stomach pretty much okay too, good stuff. And the rain held off and the views were amazing across the Forth.

Cycling 46:00 [2]

Argh, wanted to go to Jesse's to watch a video but the boys faffed for so long that by the time I had got half way through my tea (and decided to put the rest in a tupperware container to eat chez Jesse) I realised I woudln't be able to get back on a bus and so had to jump on the bike again. Now I like a good night time cycle generally, but post midnight all the way up sodding Leith Walk after plyometrics and a hill race...boy, I'm going to sleep tonight! Easy day tomorrow methinks!

Tuesday Aug 14, 2007 #

Cycling 15:03 [2]
ahr:112 max:145 slept:9.0

Much better sleep last night and feeling rejuvenated today. Cycle into work.

Intervals 33:19 [4]
ahr:163 max:190 slept:9.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Nice wee little intervals set at lunchtime, 6 mins warm up, 10 x 90 30s, then 7 or so mins warm down back to work. All on hard surface but away from the roads - really good. Legs felt much looser and certainly appreciated the stretch afterwards.

Cycling 17:04 [2]
ahr:125 max:158

Pretty beasting cycle home to try and avoid the rain.

Monday Aug 13, 2007 #

Cycling 10:39 [2]
ahr:125 max:144 slept:7.0

Bit of a restless night's sleep, kind of annoying, thought I'd be straight out after the huge run yesterday. No such luck! Must have been thinking about something, but no idea what. Anyways, cycle into the gym, left knee a bit achey.

Strength 46:39 [3]
ahr:107 max:155 slept:7.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

As knee was being a bit twingy did a medium session of the weights today but really focussed on the technique, especially getting as big a shrug as possible in the clean. Shape not very good at all on the overhead squat, knee must have taken quite a pounding over the last three days, though didn't notice it at all when running.

Clean from blocks 30kg 4 x 5
Push press 25kg 4 x 5
OH Squat 20kg 4 x 5
BB roll outs 3 x 10
Pull downs 22.5kg 3 x 10

Cycling 12:45 [2]
ahr:127 max:157

Almost every traffic light in my favour this time, a rather speedy trip to work despite the actually pretty strong wind outside.

Cycling 19:39 [3]
ahr:115 max:148

Tough cycle home in the increasing wind...was going to recovery run but feel a bit rub in general so am just going to laze around at home for a wee while instead.

Sunday Aug 12, 2007 #

Long run 2:20:50 [4] 20.0 km (7:03 / km)
ahr:167 max:189 slept:10.0 shoes: Integrators

Spent the night just east of Crianlarich with mum and dad, and wanted to run up a Munro today, but the weather was crappy so I decided to stick in the valleys, which were actually pretty sunny places instead. I ended up plumping for running the West Highland Way back from Bridge of Orchy, through Tyndrum, to Crianlarich, and then the extra three km back to the chalets. Boy was it a bit of a mission! Got a nasty stictch around Tyndrum which was only sorted by some severe uphill in the forest afterwards. That was great fun with lots of undulations, so the time passed pretty quickly. In the last flat 3km next to the main road though the heavens opened and I got pissing wet and my legs really tightehed up - the hardest 14 or so minutes of my life. Still, when I got back and looked at the map it was an awesome session, and I certainly made the most of my weekend. Ow now though! Weights tomorrow could be interesting...

Toast and bed!

Orienteering race 1:07:20 [5] ***** 8.2 km (8:13 / km) +240m 7:10 / km
ahr:190 max:197 spiked:19/28c slept:9.0 shoes: Integrators

Day 6 of the six day at Anagach. Had an early start on the elite start list and went out playing it safe at the start before speeding up. Was mentally really good and focussed till Pippa caught me, then took me a couple of controls to refocus once she did. Was totally exhausted by the last loop and faffed quite a bit just before the spectator, thought less about route choice and had to force myself to concentrate. As a result 25 onwards was much better and I didn't really lose any time in the final loop. Good race, and finished fourth, 4.28 down on Pip, which at 0.5mins per km down makes it my closest classic race yet this year. Something to be pleased about. Certainly felt so much stronger than ever before in terrain, and my bum ached afterwards so I guess the right muscles were doing the work! Time loss as follows:

3-4 Split not actually down at all but failed to see ride junction just south of control, so faffed slightly going in too early. Realised after 10 secs or so and popped over the small rise into the right depression
5-6 Too lazy to climb hill and so came out too far to right, had to run up track to control
7-8 Biggest mistake, crossed large re entrant higher than I thought at speed and dropped into the wrong depression, hitting number 9 first instead. 1.17 down.
10-11 Really hesitated, struggled to make anything fit after drifting to the east from attack point.
12-13 Legs didn't want to lose height, and hit the spur of the control way too high but brain reluctant to drop down. Caught here by Pippa.
14-15 Wasn't concentrating, trying to stick with Pip. Lost contact at the end of leg and hesitated going into control from wrong side of large depression
20-21 No error but really really physically drained across here. Resigned myself to losing Pip to enable me to finish the course!
21-22 Not thinking straight and crossed to round hill with boulder meaning I had to cross two nasty deep marshes to get to control instead of one
22-23 Didn't think about route choice and drifted, hit ditch and didn't know what was happening - control was on a clearing but veg badly mapped. After messing this one really tried hard to refocus, and it worked for the rest of the course.

ahr:191 max:200 spiked:6/9c slept:12.0 shoes: Integrators

Day 5 of the Scottish, Middle race at Camerory. Had a relatively clear run, some hesitation and a bad forced route choice but no real errors. Must have been running harder than I though looking at my heart rate! Certainly legs felt heavy mid race but then eased up by the end, I guess my first time in proper terrain for a while. Was surprised to win by 2.10, I guess my legs were fresher than most and I didn't make any real proper errors. Cool!

2-3 Was too high up slope, and hesitated before dropping in
4-5 Dead legged before hit the open
6-7 BAd route choice, got forced lower than I wanted by the slope and rock and had to climb significantly at the end of the leg.

Cycling 14:01 [2]
ahr:127 max:155 slept:6.0

Argh not enough sleep again. Went to see Andrew McLellands mix tape last night and then a very worthy play and then ate a biiiig baked potato with beans and cheese at the City Restaurant before Spiegelling it for a little longer. The good thing about Val going will be a return to the land of 8/9 hours sleep. I'm really tired today so I'm going to go home and nap instead of going to the gym. Then head up to the six day tomorrow aft. Yey for that!

The sun's shining again today. Yey for that too!

Cycling 14:42 [2]
ahr:127 max:150 slept:5.0

Slept terribly again last night, not really aided by being woken up at 4am because "you must see this!" Will, fast asleep on the toilet, with patches of vomit in the sink, on the floor, and stinking. I tried to wake him up but he just moaned and pushed me away, so I left him there. Obviously then having thought about the toilet I was desperate for a wee and so couldn't sleep again until eventually half an hour later I heard Will's door slam, dashed to the loo (bleaching the sink while I was at it, bleurgh) and finally got back to bed at about 4am, up again at 8. Rubbish! But yes, don't listen to Battles. They mess with your brain and stop you sleeping. Probably more pre period nonsense. But anyway, yes, I cycled into work and my legs really ached. But the sun was shining, so I am determined today is going to be a good day.

Cycling 19:03 [2]
ahr:114 max:143

Cycle home after a relatively productive day.

Intervals 32:07 [4]
ahr:158 max:189 slept:5.5 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Nothing serious, just 10 sets of 90x30s to get the legs moving a bit faster. Felt strangely detached from my body a bit, but felt lik eI was going pretty fast and certainly powering up the hills despite stiff quads. Probably just tired I guess from lack of sleep.

Cycling 11:33 [2]
ahr:122 max:141 slept:7.5

Slept really badly last night (that's what you get for watching modern day Film Noir just before bedtime) and it was a real struggle to get out of bed this morning. Finally made it at seven, and onto the bike for the gym. Left knee a bit stiff following yesterday's mission.

Strength 57:41 [3]
ahr:114 max:161 slept:7.5 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Strength session in the gym. Felt much better post cycle and had quite a good session. Think my snatches were a little better this time - definitely feeling it more in the shoulders than before.

Snatch from hip 22.5kg 4 x 5
Split jerk 22.5kg 4 x 4
Squat 55kg 4 x 5
DB row 14kg 3 x 10
DB shoulder press 8kg 3 x 10

Last shoulder press on left side was a real toughie. Good session!

Cycling 15:56 [2]
ahr:113 max:142

Frustrating cycle to work, every single traffic light hated me today. Slooooow.

Cycling 18:54 [2]
ahr:117 max:151

Cycle home, legs a bit stiff!

Running 50:59 [3]
ahr:161 max:190 slept:7.5 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

"Recovery" run with Val. There may have been a small amount of showing off involved, especially springing up the step in Colinton which was when the heart rate hit 190! Lovely run, he was a good match for me pace wise and it kept me going despite the fact my stomach felt awful. Wonder if it's something hormonal? Was bad at selection races just before last period and next one is about due...hmmm. Maybe.

Sunshine!

Cycling 16:28 [2]
ahr:122 max:154

Cycle to the Seat for o training. Weather is minging! How can I get burnt yesterday and then be freezing cold in full body lycra the day after?!

Orienteering 1:28:27 [4] ***** 8.7 km (10:10 / km) +550m 7:43 / km
ahr:174 max:191 spiked:22/27c slept:9.0 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Finally did Oleg's beasting Brown course on the seat from our SoSOL earlier on in the year. And boy was it a beast. Had I not faffed far too much at number 4 (how I can still miss on Whinney Hill amazes me) I would have made ten minute kms, as it was Eddie just beat me on the day. I claim the grass was higher and hence the whole thing was tougher though. Some awesome climbs, and I got up all of them with no walking. Running felt fantastic, strong and powerful, though not overly speedy. Didn't think it was possible to enjoy a course on the Seat that much, Oleg is a mastermind of devious planning. Some shocking sections of mapping though. The weather by the time I finished was utterly minging, cold and drizzly and then the cycle home was freeeezing. Please tell me yesterday wasn't our whole summer!

Pretty beasting cycle back, really pushed it up the hill on the Seat to attempt to warm up and pushed hard all the way home. Nearly had an exciting accident with a white van map but it was cunningly avoided. I think I probably looked like a twat though. My incredible soddenness didn't really allow for any warmth to build up, and despite having showered and eaten lots I still feel that horrible cold inside. Gay tea time, it has to be!

Hill Walking 2:15:00 [1]
slept:7.0

Pleasant stroll out in the heat and sunshine (22 whole degrees!) for a picnic with Val. I wanted to eat but he wanted to keep walking, and eventually we made it to the top of Capelaw having taken turns to carry the highly impractical picnic bag. I might add that I was the one carrying it up the steep offroad bit ;) It was really windy and hence a bit chilly, but we ate a lovely brunch and then half ran half walked back down. Gorgeous day, am a tad sun burnt but wonderfully relaxing. Glad we took the route we did as Will was in the same area and found a dead body. Not a pleasant afternoon for him.

Some errands to run around town before the shops shut. Down to Morningside for the preparations for Gav's present of the ace, then onto PRinces Street, then back via Princes Mall. Legs actually pretty tired but don't think I ate enough today so will have a big meal any time now.

Note

Foot and mouth is apparently back. Please please please let them contain it quickly and effectively this time. The cars going to the Scottish from the infected area have been asked to disinfect their car wheels and stuff. Fingers crossed people learnt from last time.

The DOMS, the DOMS. Ouch!

Note

Thought I was feeling better but today still don't feell 100% - can't pinpoint what it is but it's not 100%. If I'm going to run at the Scottish I might have a lazy afternoon in with the Sports Nutrition book.

Less sleep than I had planned thanks to getting all angry on msn with Sarah about the morons calling us evil vivisectionists on the Times website. Still felt fine when I woke this morning, gave myself an extra house in bed and it was all good. Cycle into work via Mr Ghafoor's to pay the month's rent. Grey morning, boo!

Weekly S & C session with Steve. Spent half an hour at the start looking at snatching, my snatch is now slightly improved but still more than a bit rubbish. The clean took time and isn't too bad now though and at least I now know what to focus on etc etc. Steve made a random fireman watch me which was mildly embarrassing but never mind.

Then we went upstairs to join Ros and did some jumping over some new lightweight higher hurdles (yey, can get good at them before going back to nasty big heavy ones), some walking lunges, a few shoulder presses and DB rows (but with a circuits gym BB, crazy weight distribution), some pull ups and some candlesticks. Felt like I would have abs like some kind of insect by the end, but no such luck.
