Knew that my legs wouldn't move fast enough to make the grade this morning, they were seriously wobbly after last night's Cross Fit. But did the session (200, 400, 400, 200) with some hills and some downhills on the way to work in the pouring rain anyway. My legs were indeed tired, but it felt good to do it. Running in the rain is much more fun than walking, as I had to do to sort my cells at TAC, then meet a student, then finally meet Rob at Bentara.

Of course, the great thing about the US Health System is that there's no waiting around like there is in the NHS.

Except of course, when you need an Ob/gyn appointment and you're not pregnant. Then you can suffer sore boobs, mild nausea, stomach cramps, insane moods and breakthrough bleeding for a whole extra month before your doctor will see you. (For those who know such things yes, I have checked and I am indeed not pregnant).

Really very angry right now. Really very very tired and very little appetite.

Recovery 54:19 intensity: (2:47 @0) + (16:39 @1) + (31:44 @2) + (3:09 @3) 7.32 km (7:25 / km) +55m 7:09 / km

Needed the shuffle to calm down after spending half an hour on the phone to the Doctor. The shuffle was lovely, but I was hit by a series of ridiculous things that happened afterwards which meant I got to work late, and ended up eating my lunch at 3.30pm.
6 PM

Cross Fit 1:11:40 intensity: (38:09 @0) + (2:17 @1) + (5:49 @2) + (11:05 @3) + (14:14 @4) + (6 @5)
ahr:134 max:190

Went to Cross Fit despite the tiredness and it was lovely to see Isabel and Ashley and co. We did the chipper, and someone stole my box, which made me angry, but then a lovely new girl let me share hers. It was all good till the rope climbs, and then the general feeling of nausea caught up with me and I only made it halfway on the last climb. Not a good time to feel wobbly, at the top of the rope.

I am shattered. I slept ten hours, got up, ate breakfast, drank coffee, then went immediately back to bed and slept for another two hours.

Meh, meh, and meh!

We went State Parking today! I have been a bloated lump all week and in a lot of pain from places I really shouldn't be. Apparently my cycle is all out of whack. Bah. But today it felt a bit better and we headed out to Mattatuck State Forest, and did a nice little loop running the flats and downs and walking the ups, while planning the trip to California. It was really nice, and the Leatherman's Cave up there is really cool. My chest was very tight the whole time - guess it's allergy time. But my head very much appreciated the trip out.

I got to lecture today after working from 8am and realised I was utterly worn out. Taught at 7pm and we played with Lego. Great way to end the module!

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

Cycling commute. Got a bit mucky on the way home in the drizzle.
7 PM

Running 50:37 intensity: (4:41 @0) + (3:14 @1) + (7:05 @2) + (28:20 @3) + (7:17 @4) 7.88 km (6:25 / km) +47m 6:14 / km
ahr:160 max:188 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Got home later than expected but felt okay (the joy of bringing enough snacks to work!) and went out to retry the 5 x 200 from last week. It felt much better today, and I also found out that someone has marked 200s (although they may be a teensy bit short) along the canal trail, so used those instead of constantly looking at my watch. Much more consistent this week, much less feeling like I was dying, although it still takes a lot more air than it should. Still 42-43 seconds is okay, and you've got to start somewhere.

The problem with not doing anything all weekend is by Sunday night I'm so unsleepy I don't sleep. Then along comes Monday morning and bam. This morning I got up, read some papers, then decided I couldn't face a couple of miles on the roads, so drove to the top end of East Rock. It's so much nicer there! Little shuffle, ideal temperature, woods still wide open. Lovely.
6 PM

Cross Fit 1:11:57 intensity: (52:05 @0) + (6:48 @1) + (5:04 @2) + (6:11 @3) + (1:49 @4) 0.5 km (2:23:54 / km) +3m 2:19:43 / km
ahr:121 max:181

Whooo! Normal Cross Fit workout. It felt REAALLYYY good to push and pull some (quite) heavy things around. Started out with some walking lunges and good mornings, then a WOD of cleans and sled pushes. It's been a while since I've cleaned, but 6 x 65# felt surprisingly easy. Most fun I've had exercising in a long time.

My watch takes a split pretty much every time I do a clean, so I get this nice success noise every time. :)

I had dreams of doing lots this weekend, but ended up sleeping in, doing lots in the garden and baking. Very pleasant, not too good for the waistline.

My new compost is not very good and it's making me sad.

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

To work and back, for the first short easy day I have had in a very long time.
3 PM

Running 26:28 intensity: (3:55 @0) + (2:10 @1) + (6:16 @2) + (13:45 @3) + (22 @4) 3.74 km (7:05 / km) +39m 6:44 / km
ahr:153 max:178 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Looong warm up run on the way to Cross Fit to ensure that the knees didn't feel at all dodgy before rowing again. A bit stiff at first, but lots of dynamic stretchy time and drills sorted it out.

Running 10:06 intensity: (1 @0) + (13 @1) + (2:05 @2) + (3:37 @3) + (3:47 @4) + (23 @5) 1.76 km (5:45 / km) +1m 5:44 / km
ahr:169 max:190 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Finished off with 5 x 200m repeats (except the first wasn't even 200m because my watch was on the wrong screen.)

I think having done this, even though I was wearing a light rucksac, I can safely say that this is the most unfit I have ever been. Very very depressing ten minutes.

Cross Fit 50:37 intensity: (2:51 @0) + (1:31 @1) + (1:22 @2) + (15:51 @3) + (29:02 @4)
ahr:172 max:189

The other retest. 5 sets of 1km row, 15 thrusters, 15 burpees, 15 ring rows. This felt horrible. Really really horrible. The rowing was okay, though my back was tight. The thrusters and burpees felt rubbish though. I'm presuming that my cross fit specific type stuff detrains more quickly than my general endurance, given how practiced I am at the latter. Still, just managed to beat old me, 45.18 instead of 46.01.
5 PM

Recovery 38:31 intensity: (43 @0) + (20:08 @1) + (17:40 @2) 4.83 km (7:59 / km) +30m 7:44 / km
ahr:143 max:151 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Shuffled back from Cross Fit. Very shuffly. I saw a coyote on the canal trail!

The homeworks I had to grade were from hell today, so I never made it out to exercise as I expected.

Wednesday Apr 16, 2014 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

Figured if I couldn't cycle there was no way I should try anything else. Commute to work and back, and it was fine. Didn't push very hard at any point. Cycle home was very late after teaching and meal out - forgot how much I love cycling when half the neighbourhood has gone to bed.

Tuesday Apr 15, 2014 #

Luckily the tendon felt a world better today. A few twinges and some DOMs in my left quad, but as I walked around the lab doing stuff it eased up. Pretty much no soreness at all by the evening.

Monday Apr 14, 2014 #

8 AM

Cycling 40:00 [1]

To Cross Fit and back.

Cross Fit 1:05:09 intensity: (3:57 @0) + (1:00 @1) + (17 @2) + (27:22 @3) + (32:33 @4)
ahr:171 max:186

Finally felt up to re-testing my Cross Fit research WODs. Way too late now for science after two weeks of being ill, but might as well do it for me. Didn't finish the rowing as strongly as last time, but still managed an extra 700m or so in the hour, managing 12.547km this time.

Unfortunately my right knee twinged for about thirty seconds somewhere in the middle, then it went away, so I carried on. By the evening my quad tendon was exceptionally sore, and I spent the evening icing and compressing the area.

Yesterday's action above. Bonus Devil Cat photo below.

6 PM

Running 40:31 intensity: (3:12 @0) + (15:12 @1) + (21:42 @2) + (25 @3) 6.15 km (6:35 / km) +39m 6:23 / km

Today was the absolute opposite to yesterday, we hung out in the garden with the cats all day. It was lovely. I went for a jog at the very end when I was feeling too sleepy to cook dinner.

Mega welcome to Spring Day! Went to Storm King to hear the Poet Laureate recite some poetry, had a nice stroll and picnic, then a mad dash to Simsbury to pick thing up from our favourite plant sitters. Enough time for a stroll around Great Pond, which we only just got to as strictly it's part of Massacoe State Forest. Gorgeous evening, lovely woods for walking, and the peepers were out in full force!

We didn't spot the dawn redwood though - any ideas walk?

70% jog into work, almost 100% snot free!

Wednesday Apr 9, 2014 #

Cycling 1:10:00 [1]

Commute plus into town and back a couple of times for teaching stuff. Much faster on the bike. Wasn't as improved today as I hoped and decided not to run.

Tuesday Apr 8, 2014 #

Got out for a shuffle this morning. Despite not moving any faster than Rob walking pace, the snot rockets were spectacular. Hopefully on the way to health now!
8 AM

Running 37:57 intensity: (9:20 @0) + (15:34 @1) + (11:05 @2) + (1:58 @3) 5.01 km (7:34 / km) +56m 7:10 / km
ahr:140 max:162 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Shuffle into work from East Rock. Not exactly feeling 100%, and there was a lot of snot, but heart rate wasn't spiking an insane amount and it felt good to get rid of aforementioned snot. Going to try running fast for very brief amounts tomorrow, then maybe Cross Fit on Thursday. Had the first semi busy work day I've had in a long time, and it was bliss to take a long lunch break and enjoy some time with lab mates for the first time in a while.

Monday Apr 7, 2014 #

No coughing all night...time to get on the bike for a test run!

Cycling 35:00 [1]

Huffing and puffing a bit too much on the hills, but definitely on the mend in general. Right decision not to run yet.

Sunday Apr 6, 2014 #

Have reached the coughing up green goo stage after a not great night's sleep. Hopefully almost back to normal.

Slept pretty badly last night but after an afternoon spent in the sunshine in the garden am feeling almost human again, and snot/cough explosions are less frequent. Couldn't find anywhere that sold floating row cover material so have ordered some off the internet, but I fear I may be too late. The bugs are out already, and I was bitten by my first mosquito of the year. Not a super itchy one this time though!

Hoping to do some exercise this week now.

Saturday Apr 5, 2014 #

Snot everywhere now, stinking headache, am at work where temperatures range between arctic and arctic based sauna. Not happy!

Friday Apr 4, 2014 #

Snot everywhere! Bah!

Thursday Apr 3, 2014 #

Of course! Just as the weather hits peak running conditions for the year, I am sick! It's definitely not allergies, it's definitely sick. Working too much this week. It was a mid module exam for the teaching, I have lots of my work, and then I have a Masters student from France who arriving on Tuesday. No rest for the wicked...
