Due to Spring break our holiday is a road trip and not the calm, collected two destination idea we'd planned.
We're all booked with hotels so this plan is not flexible. I know I know there is not anywhere near enough time to do everything in each place, we know that!
So, I want to hear the must sees/must dos for these places!
Great Sand Dunes NP
Mesa Verde NP (no tours in winter, lookouts only)
Monument Valley
Zion NP (we might try the Wave lottery at Vermilion Cliffs, as we're staying in that town - I never have any luck at lotteries so it likely won't happen!)
Bryce Canyon NP
Capitol Reef NP (drive through probably)
Moab (Arches and Canyonlands)
And finally George, you must know a good restaurant in Vail for dinner on the way back!
I was feeling a bit better but then yesterday felt like I went backwards again, and my HR agreed with that feeling.
Woken up in the middle of the night by the lightning from an amazing storm. Today every is blue as far as the eye can see, and my heart rate is still up.

HR was almost back below illness levels and the lab was an atrocious hot mess, so I took a late afternoon shuffle. It felt okay. Will see how tomorrow goes.
HR even higher this morning, not many more symptoms than a thick head and a headache. Sinus infection? This is annoying.
Note
So, we have no concrete plans for moving back to the UK yet. But I want to start talking about finding a new home for the devil cats. I wrote a long Facebook post about it. If you know anyone who might consider adopting them, perhaps you could share it with them? Also, if any orienteers are up to the challenge, I would love to hear from them. We will consider taking them back if we can't find the right person. But we are worried that Clem's sniffly nose may land them in quarantine on the other side and that would be much worse for them than being re-adopted.
Today was weird. Woke up with more energy, but resting HR still way above the sick line. Figured I'd do a few jobs around the house as I felt okay. Then went to do the week's food shopping and made it halfway around the Farmer's Market before bonking completely. Now I feel like I did two days ago. Booo. HR is a better indicator than apparent energy levels, it turns out.
Wondered what happened to my motivation. When I woke up covered in sweat (gross!) at 5am this morning I knew.
Unfortunately I started two super important experiments yesterday (with irreplaceable human tissue and no "stop" point) so have had to go into work for a bit. Just finished the first one and now just another hour or so to go, then back to bed.

Took a run around the neighbourhood waiting for the road to thaw. It was sheet ice when I left and water when I got back. There were some really warm breezes of wind, like running past the outflow of someone's clothes dryer. It was very strange.

Progression run along a very icy, very cold canal trail. It was about -12 degrees sensible, the warmest part of the day. I ran in 5 layers, including a down gilet, and a Russian style hat, which didn't come off until my HR hit 175 in the last couple of miles. The sunshine was glorious and I saw a really massive hawk with big bushy feet. It was good to get out.

Then beat my 2 x Athena time again. Getting better at climbers. I am bored of 2 x Athena. Luckily next week Coach has decided to introduce me to Helios on 2 of my 3 workout days. Helios is a total bastard. I'm scared.

After two completely throw away days feeling very tired and thick in the head, Alex persuaded me to brave the cold and go for a shuffle. As usual, she was right. It was veeeeery windy out there.

Hermes the 2 x 2 version. It went quite well. I'm probably not sick.
I did train a bit the last few days, just haven't logged yet. Today however I am exhausted and there is green gunk in my nose, so I'm going to have another easy day.

Early shuffle in the very wet snow. Found some trails I could run on, but was disappointed to find that most of the ones on google were in private gated estates and so I had to stick to the roads for the second part.
Another super busy day in DC - this time we did the Hirschhorn, Library of Congress, a photography exhibition in the fine art gallery, and then headed back up to Dupont to get a train out to Bethesda. I grabbed a run on the treadmill there. Tried to do a random hill program but it didn't really do very much.
Didn't run today but did walk for miles (Jawbone reckons more than 11!), taking in the monuments and then three of the Smithsonian Museums. They were all excellent, but I was most struck by the FDR Memorial. Instead of the next Republican debate, I'd like to take them all down there to read his wise words, and offer a response to them. Trump particularly could learn a whole bunch.

Short shuffle before spending all day on an Amtrak. Glorious morning, treacherous ice. Integrators are wonderful. I got three jealous looks from dog walkers sliding all over the place.

Today was a "long" progression run. Of course, being a progression run day, it snowed. I had to carry a big pack with lots of warm clothes as our street was not drivable and I did not have much energy. So while I got faster every mile, I wouldn't say I ever got fast. Pleased to have ticked it off and made it in by 8.10 to start a silly 8 hour digest.

In the microtome room at work. Only Eric saw me, and he knows I'm crazy so it was fine.

Did not pick the best day of the week for the 3km Time Trial that Alex made me do! This was embarrassingly bad I guess, for 3km. The first two km felt great, and then I pretty much fell apart. At about 2.5km had to walk two steps to be able to fill my lungs up fully. Final time: 13.44. Which is depressingly only a little bit slower than my marathon pace of 2008. Ho hum. What is important is that I got out on a gross day and actually did it. That beats 70% of the last three of four years!
