After a quick SMS convo with Marie realised that trainers wasn't a good plan for today, and so made attempt number two with stabilisers. With the addition of an over the foot tie (Kelly's suggestion) and smaller shoes (mine), they were loads better - only had to adjust twice and lots and lots of comfortable grip on the ice. Wish I had taken my camera as the woods and river at the base of East Rock looked gorgeous with all the ice on the branches. Baffled many people by running past them on sidewalks they were unable to move on! Fear that part of that was the speed and therefore force of hitting the ground in running - may have the same problem myself walking into work in an hour or so!
