Orienteering race (9.15 km ) 1:47:36 [4] 7.1 km (15:09 / km) +302m 12:30 / km
ahr:133 max:152

Long Canadian champs. Very enjoyable, great course by Greg Balter, technically difficult, and superb map. Cooler today (75-80) which made a big difference. Had a good race with only a few mistakes. Rough terrain which made running quite slow hence the slow times overall.

Came in third in M45, but of course no medal since not a Canadian! Lost about 4-5 minutes overall.

Interesting route choice to 3, I hesitated at first but decided to go around to the north and attack from the path. Was afraid of too much green on the other route. Greg (course setter) agreed it was the right choice, but AP reports I lost a 1 minute.

Made an inexplicable mistake en route to 4, followed the path to the W without noticing at first. Must have missed one of the intersecting paths I was expecting, but how did I miss the 90 degree turn? Very odd. I only discovered the error because I did a routine direction check, not suspecting anything was wrong , and discovered I was going 180 degrees wrong! Took a little while to figure out while I stared dumbfounded at the compass (va f-n, går jag på sydan?!) Cost about 2 mins.

Close to 7, saw cliffs in front of me and thought I was past the control, didn't see the small cliffs on the map at first. 1.5 mins.

To 9 followed the contours but slipped a little low at the very end, 1 mins lost.

Orienteering race 1:04:22 [3] 4.81 km (13:23 / km) +148m 11:36 / km
ahr:139 max:156

Middle distance Canadian champs, just NE of Rawdon, 1 hour NE of Montreal. Technically challenging but fun course, and terrain was challenging too especially controls 11-15, very rocky and dense and including a 50-60m or so climb up to 11 that just sucked the energy out of me. But most of all it was HOT, pushing 90 degrees, and I don't do well over 75 degrees at all...navigation on the first half of the course was pretty good, spiked pretty much everything. But starting with 11 my brain turned to hot soggy porridge and my concentration just went out the window, lost about 7 mins between 11 and 17.

Surprisingly placed 4th in M45 and on the Middle 9 course, so clearly I was not the only one struggling...

AP reports only 4 minutes lost which optimistic. Looking at splits, lost 5 mins on 11, 2 on 14, and 1 on 17 (more on that later!). Plus a few small wobbles. 8 mins total.

Slight wobble on 1, 30s, otherwise clean until 11.
By the time I had climbed the 40 meters to 11, I was exhausted and not thinking straight. Lost track of where I climbed up and walked around slowly for a good while trying to relocate.
Bad luck on 14, must have passed within 5 meters of the control at the outset. 2 minutes to circle around.
The last control 17 was just silly. I started running down the field until I thought I realized I had read the map wrong. Doubled back, only to realize that I didn't like the idea of crossing the green and the stream, so ran down the field again. 1 minute.

Think I got mild heat stroke, which explains 17 et al. Was far more exhausted than usual after the race. Ate dinner - two bowls of pasta to carb up for the Long tomorrow - then fell asleep at 8pm and slept 11 hours.

Not sure why my heart rate was recorded so high by Suunto watch. I didn't struggle that much, took it relatively easy...
