Super fun race on Ward Pound Ridge, northern part. National Ranking Event by HVO, course setter Niels, excellent as always including a great long leg. Ran red / M45, 7.8km, 300 climb (I climbed 356m). Low 70s and sunny, got there early to avoid the heat.

Really enjoyed the run, that said had a few wobbles. Went a little high into 2, and was sure I was at the right two rocks so got confused, 2 min lost according to AP. Also a little high on 3 but no more than 20s.

Route choice to 8 was questionable, should have used the path, the green raster was really dark green, had to thread through and look for paths through, very slow. I didn't read the course notes beforehand, Niels clearly wrote that these areas are impassable. My bad! Lost 30 according to AP but seemed more.

Route choice to 11 was the discussion of the day. Niels test ran 4 routes, for him the fastest was following contours on a fairly direct approach. I sprinted on the paths and road to the W of the line, which was second best choice according to Niels. A bit of altitude towards the end slowed me down but I gained on several runners so not a bad choice.

Route choice to 13 was not the best, too messy close to the swamp and lost some time. Niels said the straight path was very clear, wouldn't have guessed that from the map. Lost 1.5 mins according to AP.

Hesitated slightly coming into 17, saw #12 and at first thought it was 17 before remembering it was #12!

Map and GPS (got Suunto to work now, doing GPS lock very carefully at start!):
