Orienteering race (COC Middle Distance) 39:41 [4] 3.0 km (13:14 / km) +115m 11:06 / km

Canadian Championships middle distance, Foley Mountain some 20km SW of Perth, ON. I ran M45 instead of M55, but we actually shared the same course. 3.58km per GPS, 115m climb. Came 8th out of 32 in M45, would have placed 4th in M55 out of 34. 11th of 66 on the course.

Map was outstanding, very detailed and accurate. Thank you!

Didn't think I had a very good run. Lost about 5 minutes. Ground was very rocky and I moved slowly. Didn't find a decent running speed until midway through the course. #1 was fine. As was #2...except I ran straight to #3, failing to see #2 on the map. Lost 2.5 minutes. Straight to #4, hesitated a little as control was well hidden in the depression. Slow running to #5 but no issues. Lost 30s on #6 as ended up too far S, by the swamp. Went past and to the W of #7, found and punched another control but luckily checked the number. Figured out where I was and went back up to #7, but lost 1.5m. Tricky terrain, many clearings, difficult to stay in contact with the map. Tried to use a cliff as attack point to #8, but veered slightly S and mistook another cliff, lost 30s. Ran slightly past #9 as well, 15s. Clean runs to 10 through to finish.

Orienteering race (Night-O) 40:38 [5] 5.1 km (7:58 / km) +54m 7:34 / km

Night-O at Rivermead Golf Course outside Ottawa. I ran the Long course, 5.1km, which included M21-34E, M20E, M35 etc. About 40 people starting, running 9 different versions of the course to make it more interesting. I came 22nd, which I'm relatively pleased with, most of the M50 & M55s competed in the middle distance course (4.2km). Lost about 4 minutes in total on mistakes. Winning time 24 minutes. Actual distance run was 6.2km according to my GPS, 54m climb.

This was my first Night-O since about 1979, when I ran a night leg at 10-mila in Småland/Jönköping. Entirely different then, poor light with large battery backpack (which didn't work that well), and orienteering mostly through the dark November woods. I still remember the huge swamps and how intimidating they were in the dark...

Awesome fun! Mass start at 21:20, but it wasn't completely dark. Followed the crowd to #1 which turned out not to be mine...lost perhaps 15s. Quickly got the hang of it, like a sprint course and for the most part terrain features of the golf course could easily be seen. Spiked #2 through #9, then slight wobble on #10, there was a hill not on the map which confused me, lost perhaps 30s. Spiked #11, went to a control 50m E of #12, lost 20s. Spiked 14 through 16, then made a really silly mistake on #17 which cost 2.5 to 3 minutes. Put it down to fatigue and poor map reading. Spiked 18 and 19, then instead of running to the finish, ran to the download station which for some unknown reason I figured was the finish. Lost another 30s at least. Lost 4.5 minutes in total, so would have finished with 36m with a clean run.

Orienteering race (ECOC Day 2, Middle) 34:45 [4] 3.5 km (9:56 / km) +12m 9:46 / km

Second day of Eastern Canadian Championship, in Pierrefonds, 20 miles W of Montreal. Middle distance, 3.5km, I competed in M45, actual distance run 4.1km according to GPS.

A decent run, felt hotter than yesterday but my running was OK (improving!). A lot drier, no water on trails and swamps were OK. Came in 8th in a field of 21, 7 minutes after the winner. I would have come in second or third in M55 based on my time/km, though they had a different course.

Lost 2.5 minutes on 1, combination of suboptimal route choice (took the path to the south, would have been faster and safer to go straight / slightly to the N and hit the stone wall, but I thought the path would be faster than the green), and veering too much E and N on the approach, missing the control by 50-75 meters, then struggled to figure out where I was, then slow going back.
Lost 10-20s on 2, too far N, went for the rock NE of the control.
Then clean until 7 where I veered to the right and had to come back, lost 1 minute.
Rest was clean.
