Night-O at Rivermead Golf Course outside Ottawa. I ran the Long course, 5.1km, which included M21-34E, M20E, M35 etc. About 40 people starting, running 9 different versions of the course to make it more interesting. I came 22nd, which I'm relatively pleased with, most of the M50 & M55s competed in the middle distance course (4.2km). Lost about 4 minutes in total on mistakes. Winning time 24 minutes. Actual distance run was 6.2km according to my GPS, 54m climb.
This was my first Night-O since about 1979, when I ran a night leg at 10-mila in Småland/Jönköping. Entirely different then, poor light with large battery backpack (which didn't work that well), and orienteering mostly through the dark November woods. I still remember the huge swamps and how intimidating they were in the dark...
Awesome fun! Mass start at 21:20, but it wasn't completely dark. Followed the crowd to #1 which turned out not to be mine...lost perhaps 15s. Quickly got the hang of it, like a sprint course and for the most part terrain features of the golf course could easily be seen. Spiked #2 through #9, then slight wobble on #10, there was a hill not on the map which confused me, lost perhaps 30s. Spiked #11, went to a control 50m E of #12, lost 20s. Spiked 14 through 16, then made a really silly mistake on #17 which cost 2.5 to 3 minutes. Put it down to fatigue and poor map reading. Spiked 18 and 19, then instead of running to the finish, ran to the download station which for some unknown reason I figured was the finish. Lost another 30s at least. Lost 4.5 minutes in total, so would have finished with 36m with a clean run.
