For me, this was a most awesome training session. I lost more than 10 minutes on Sunday Spring Thing race due to drifting. This training exercise was a course on the same map but the map was blank except for an 80m swath between controls. On two of those legs, the swath covered a dog-leg route.

I found the training of such high value that I wanted to publish splits on AP but I forgot to discount the run time to the start.

Controls were straightforward but it was real tough to micro-navigate within the swath. From control 3, the trail pulled me, like a giant magnet, away from the swath. (Un)fortunately, I know the forest too well and ran through nothingness to the fence crossing. My zigzag in and out of the swath to control 6 was my worst. I never saw control 8, eventually headed for 9 but ran into those coming out of 6 and Stefan soon set me straight. I saw Jeff leaving 9 and put the hammer down. Shortly out of control 11, I spotted the control, ignored the map, put my head down and sprinted to control...13. Oops, back to 12 and then I completed final leg to 13.

It's obvious that I need far more training like this.

This race was so much better than I expected because at the finish I expected to learn that I had run right by control 3 w/o punching. With so much confusion coming out of control 3: swimming towards control 4, worried about wearing those same shoes to work tomorrow, four of us missing control 4 no matter which way at it. I even asked Lorna if she remembered seeing me punch last control. I hadn't even caught her by that point. I carried on, decided not to swim the marsh twice more, expecting a MP all the way through the course. Bottom line: I didn't quit and I'm delighted to have results that stand.
