7 PM

Running (out of date) 26:51 [3] 6.2 km (4:20 / km) +70m 4:06 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Back on two legs, hoorah! Some pain, but manageable.

Time of an easy, logic of a shakeout, pace of a steady and effort of a tempo. This run doesn't have a name, probably because its a terrible training method, but it was fun, and if my legs are going to let me run every now and then, then I'm going to have fun with it.

SLR tomorrow unless I wake up in pain.

Cycling 1:25:00 [3] +220m

Tried something new. It was good. Reverse Haslingtoft, albeit the poor man's bike version.

Chucked in 3 reps up chapel hill about 45 mins in, which got the legs pumping a bit. Felt slightly silly for not staying out longer when I finished though. Glorious day out and it's so hard to get tired on a bike

Back on the bike. Of course. Busway to Longstanton, which is clearly the best bit of cycling around in Cambridge, but probably time to try something different just so I know its not as good. Chased some Cambridge Blue on much fancier bikes on the way back, but they slipped away through a traffic light.

Running (out of date) 15:05 [3] 3.2 km (4:43 / km) +10m 4:38 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Started the session - plan for tempo 5'[2']10'[2']15' on Parker's Piece. Got through a warmup lap and 5' absolutely fine, feeling quite smooth even, but barely ten steps into the 10' and knee/shin thing said it was over.

Went for an unlogged very very angry spin around JGreen to work off the adrenaline/frustration

Tuesday Aug 27, 2019 #

Note
(rest day)

Give the shin(?) a chance to recover. Session postponed. Ugh.

6 PM

Running (out of date) 37:37 [3] 7.5 km (5:01 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Planned to go easy and get easier, just shaking out the 'long' run before sessioning tomorrow. Then a twinge in the shin. Kept going round Fen Ditton grass and home, but walking the tarmac to be safe cos it was still there.

It was just a twinge, so on the basis of 'surely not again' and also it being impossible to get injured at 5min/kms, I'm going to pretend it was nothing, though if there's anything there tomorrow I might get on the bike and session Wednesday instead.
11 PM

S&C 20:00 [3]

Core, then legs stuff that *might* help protect knees and shins.

This is pretty dull but the alternative is bubble-wrapping myself and doing easy aquajog sessions... Actually that sounds quite fun

SLR - Girton

11km with Iain, Saeed and Emily went in a breeze but felt myself working a bit on an incline into Girton. Decided to swallow my gel and pride at this point, but it was too late. First a gap, then off the back, then on the ground, all in not very many minutes.

Brought out the shuffle-jog interspersed with bits of slightly heat-addled walking. It was seriously hot out there, and I've not felt the lactic come on like that maybe ever, but nonetheless not my proudest moment.

Many SLRs to come before varsity though. Glad to have started :)

Cycling 1:00:00 [3] +80m
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Unsure whether to run or bike today eyeing a comeback SLR tomorrow vs a mileage target for the past week. This is no time to be chasing miles though, so went for the spin in the end, and very glad for it because I doubt I could've would've survived a run in that heat for long. Nice hour in the saddle though.

Running (out of date) 49:01 [3] 10.3 km (4:46 / km) +30m 4:41 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Certainly on the shorter and slower side of things - and really embarrassingly tired by the end of this - but that is recognisably a training run.

Niggle free back-to-back training days, I'm almost a little suspicious. Must keep the anti-ITBS stretches going, and manage mileage load carefully, but there might be a chance of proper training weeks to come soon.

Now weighing the pros and cons of trying to go 3 days in a row, attempting a Sunday Long Run, or giving the legs a break

Running (out of date) 37:33 [3] 7.9 km (4:45 / km) +20m 4:42 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Inner parks run. Not the most exciting, but safest in case of twinges. Happily though, none to report. Knees appreciative of the weekend off and steady approach, but feels like progress in that department. Real changes in fitness will have to wait though.

Cycling 1:01:07 [3] +80m
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Meant to be a short spin on the busway but decided to get out to Dry Drayton and back on the little climbs to Madingley so ended up a little long.

Someone kicked past me (probably had a nicer bike something something) heading up to Madingley so had a little back and forth into town which pushed the pace up.

Running (out of date) intervals 27:29 [4] 5.9 km (4:39 / km) +20m 4:35 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

what!? A session? Yes really, a session.

4x300[90'']
[5']
2x300[2']

Complete track fairy nonsense, but actually a very easy session to get back into. Felt good, if very slow. Knees didn't enjoy life afterwards, but felt fine while running. I'm not sure if that's good news or actually quite dangerous - might get a better idea tomorrow morning.

7 PM

Running (out of date) 30:18 [3] 6.7 km (4:31 / km) +10m 4:29 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Lil run pre-climbing. Felt decent, but knees making themselves known. If I can't train with a niggle like this I'll never train at all so just gotta manage it carefully.
8 PM

Climbing 1:30:00 [3]

Climby climb with Sam and Gabriel. Felt like a breakthrough session, suddenly able to do some colours I'd never even considered before, which was nice. One route kept tripping me up though and couldn't crack it before closing time, so I'll have to go back.

Would be very nice to feel that sort of progress and compulsion to get a thing done with running - its been missing with all these injuries and low-mileage 'sensible' training weeks.

Friday Aug 16, 2019 #

7 PM

Cycling 36:05 [3]

Thought I spotted a gap in the weather for a spin, but actually might've ended up in the worst of it. Bit dull and short but go the job done

Thursday Aug 15, 2019 #

8 PM

Running (out of date) 9:27 [3] 2.0 km (4:44 / km)
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Knees were twinging hard on Sunday evening, so decided to take a couple of days off. Still notable on Wednesday, so extended another day.

Got bored of not running today, so went for a very short very slow jaunt round Parkers Piece and Christ's Pieces. Knee wasn't great, but not awful either. Feels very much like ITB again. Guess I just need to take the easing back in easier. right.

5 PM

Cycling 1:25:14 [3] +70m

Got some new tyres on the bike, so took it for a wee spin up the busway. Lovely until the thunderstorm hit, albeit with a few niggles

Running (out of date) 55:00 [3] 11.8 km (4:40 / km) +40m 4:35 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Baitsbite.

In principle the last of the 5 minutes every second day thing, though a spin tomorrow and roughly an hour on Monday seems a decent plan anyway.

Knees still niggly, which is beginning to be a bit alarming. Going to keep it careful for another week.

Friday Aug 9, 2019 #

9 PM

Climbing 1:00:00 [3]

Trekked into London with Sam for some fancy bouldering. Quality stuff but think I might stick to Cambridge Wall for convenience

Lovely 50 round grantchester

Cycling 30:00 [3]

Boring spin in the gym

Tuesday Aug 6, 2019 #

5 PM

Running (out of date) 37:30 [3] 8.2 km (4:34 / km) +40m 4:28 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Feels fab to be running a genuine full route again, even if it is only Fen Ditton. Pushed the pace a bit more than necessary, and niggles still present especially in knees, worth monitoring but that's par for the course when coming back to running.

Spin bike session tomorrow doesn't fill me with excitement, but it's gotta be done.

Note
(rest day)

Planning a route to stations for puncture-avoidance doesn't work when you puncture before getting out of town. A
snapped tyre lever the latest casualty in my complete inability to repair bikes. No training today except a 45min huffy walk back from Cambridge outskirts

Sunday Aug 4, 2019 #

Note

Plan for this week is 35 today, 40 on Tuesday, 45 Thursday and 50 on Saturday. That should come out to around 40km, which isn't that far off a training week, especially once you throw in some cross-training on the in-between days.

If the Saturday run is niggle-free, then I'll treat next week as 'normal training' - keeping the mileage low, but quitting this nasty solo-run game, and if I'm really feeling up for it maybe a half session.
3 PM

Running (out of date) 35:00 [2] 7.1 km (4:56 / km) +30m 4:50 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Almost a full Fen Ditton!

Not saying much, but I'll plod on in the brutal Cambridge heat (maybe not wearing a jacket to run would help).

Cycling 1:37:41 [3]
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

Lovely spin out East. Deep enough into Fenland to reach a lot of nothing, a few fields and some things approximating hills, all punctuated by a series of ridiculously named villages.

Realised at Six Mile Bottom that if I got a puncture I would be in really quite a lot of trouble, so I've got a slightly safer route South passing by lots of train stations planned for next time...

if there is one. Might be able to retire the bike for a while with toes fine and niggles improving.

8 PM

Running (out of date) 30:02 [2] 6.4 km (4:42 / km) +20m 4:37 / km
shoes: Asics Gel-Exalt 5 (heavies)

30!... Well, 22 and then another 8. Niggles stopped play for a bit, but stretched it out and walked a bit before finishing up the 30. Even some slight hints of shaking the rusty feeling in the legs to start with.

Back on the bike tomorrow I reckon though.
