4 PM

Running (out of date) 1:08:29 [3] 14.4 km (4:45 / km) +220m 4:25 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Up to top of Blackford hill since its been a while, then zig-zagging up the golf courses to get maximum mileage out of B+B without having to trek out to Mortonhall. Wanted to do one more that included top of Braids but too dark to see where I was stepping and one encounter with an invisible rabbit hole was enough to send me home on the roads.

Bit slow, but enjoyable. Solo cos Fred's ill :(

Running (out of date) warm up/down 4:03 [1] 0.6 km (6:45 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Return of the CD and drills.

Running (out of date) 8:17 [4] 2.1 km (3:57 / km) +10m 3:51 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Lazy day, quick veg collection before some further vegging

Note
(sick)

Think that's a record mileage week, done feeling a bit ill and back in Edinburgh's freezing cold. Need to be a bit careful
1 PM

Running (out of date) 1:28:46 [3] 19.6 km (4:32 / km) +270m 4:14 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Long around the meadows and seat with Fred, feeling progressively fresher until about 15k on the hike back up the hill from KF which was a bit of a killer

Very aware I've overcooked the mileage for this week, which is nice given the lack of motivation, but defo an injury risk. Will take advantage of the plane journey and then presumed travel tiredness in South Africa next week to rest up a little bit
2 PM

Running (out of date) warm up/down 4:55 [1] 0.9 km (5:28 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Freddie was very keen to get a bit more mileage than me by coming back past my house. So chucked in some drills and strides to try get back ahead ;)

Petty? nah.

Running (out of date) 1:18:33 [3] 16.6 km (4:44 / km) +220m 4:26 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Nice Mortonhall with Freddie and Eddie. Cold and icy, but good to be back and so much easier to get miles done with some company.

1 PM

Running (out of date) 43:58 [3] 9.7 km (4:32 / km) +90m 4:20 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Down to run and become to look at road racers, but the people worked out pretty quick I wasn't gonna buy anything, so got minimal help on that :(

Then planned Deans-WoL-Saughton-canal to get home, but the walkway is closed, was starting to get achilles pain, and in a bit of a rush to get home, so bailed back via meadows.

Feeling a bit more up for it today, but still coldy

Running (out of date) 44:12 [4] 8.6 km (5:08 / km) +50m 5:00 / km
(sick) shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Down to meadows, grim conditions again.
16*(30s[30s])

Not especially fun and not sure how useful tbh, but lacking the motivation needed for longer solo reps.

Cold is appearingtoo...

Wednesday Dec 13, 2017 #

4 PM

Running (out of date) 1:03:25 [3] 13.2 km (4:48 / km) +90m 4:39 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Planned a double lap of the seat, but got 20 metres up the road from the pond and decided it was too icy and dark, so bailed to killing fields for some steady laps. Pretty slow stuff, couldn't see where I was going and never really planned to push the pace.

Glad to have got this done but was more of a grind than it should've been. Need to start getting out in the light. Quads inexplicably tight :(

Tuesday Dec 12, 2017 #

Running (out of date) 24:00 [3] 5.0 km (4:48 / km) +30m 4:40 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Went down to do a very ambitious solo session on the meadows (4 x 10min tempo, with 3.30min recovery). Felt okayish, but not super excited about it. Finished warmup, started first rep, garmin died.

Never mind, I'll just do it without times... nope
Trudged home unmotivatedly, not happy.

Monday Dec 11, 2017 #

Running (out of date) 1:15:00 [3] 15.3 km (4:54 / km) +90m 4:46 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

Canal with Eddie and Tom, nice to be back in the burgh, bit dark though and seriously cold (but not as cold as I was expecting, so overheated)

bit of a pain to get mileage from mapmyrun, but gotta get it done for the fans ;)

Sunday Dec 10, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Needed a rest day after getting home. Training tour ended up being fairly low mileage because of the problems at the start of the week, but still crazy tiring

Saturday Dec 9, 2017 #

Forest-O 50:00 [3] 6.9 km (7:15 / km) +150m 6:32 / km

Newborough again (tour champs)

Borrowed distance data from Paul and guessing (maybe charitably) the time. Pretty shocking run, giving up the will to race after Bigby caught me, plenty of errors and some slow running and low motivation. Sad times all round, but its not possible to look sad in the Dan hat, so instead I was happy.

Running (out of date) warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

WUP/WD

11 AM

Forest-O 1:16:30 [3] 9.3 km (8:14 / km) +50m 8:01 / km
shoes: VJ Bold 8 (dobbs)

More Newborough, because the weather was too grotty for Gwanas. Shame cos I liked Gwanas at JHIs, but then not really cos this forest is class. Orienteering fairly badly through periodic hailstorms, but enjoyed it.

Forest-O 20:37 [3] 2.9 km (7:07 / km) +20m 6:52 / km

5 PM

Sprint-O 9:00 [3] 1.0 km (9:00 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

AlcO, abso freezing in my binbag. Felt grotty at start, end, and every point in between. Creds to winner Tim who's clearly been well trained by Oxford ;)

Thursday Dec 7, 2017 #

11 AM

Forest-O 1:16:31 [3] 10.2 km (7:30 / km) +90m 7:11 / km

Made it to the second day at Newborough. Bunch of lovely courses in a candidate for best orienteering area I've ever been to. Made up for the last three days of stomach and neck pain, and general lack of training
2 PM

Forest-O 26:03 [5] 4.5 km (5:47 / km) +20m 5:40 / km

Bigby's sprint format at Newborough, kept with Paul and Aidan at the front and slowly shaking off Tim and Ben as the course went on. Lost contact a few times to retie shoelaces but made up ground on their mistakes. Got into the lead off a misplaced control with two legs to go, but ended up 3rd courtesy of my lack of sprint finish training.

Even better fun than Aidan hyped it up to be. Impressed.

Forest-O 16:18 [2] 2.0 km (8:09 / km) +20m 7:46 / km

Control collecting, tried to do it all off compass just out of interest to see how bad bearings are at the moment.

Achilles started to twinge towards the end so stopped and walked it.

Wednesday Dec 6, 2017 #

Note
(rest day)

Walked 2/3 up Snowdon, bailed cause of storm caroline and weird neck situation, other CUOCers continued because rest days are for the weak.

Tuesday Dec 5, 2017 #

11 AM

Forest-O 21:32 [3] 2.0 km (10:46 / km) +30m 10:01 / km
(injured) shoes: VJ Bold 8 (dobbs)

Woke up and cracked neck, holding it at an angle all day because straightening it out was too painful.

Situation made better by not missing much - extremely poor quality skog at Llyn Elsi. Bailed on the training and went home after one exercise. The area was actually unusable.

Monday Dec 4, 2017 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Very painful stomach woke me up early and didn't get back to sleep. Figured it might be the same thing I've had two or three times before where it gets unreasonably painful for half an hour or so and then goes away very quickly. Given I'm still lying in bed and it still hurts, this must be something else.

Not how I wanted to spend training tour's first day at Newborough

Sunday Dec 3, 2017 #

Forest-O 1:55:58 [3] 10.5 km (11:03 / km)
shoes: VJ Bold 8 (dobbs)

Braich Bryn Engan - decent area but hard work and hilly and very very wet

Forest-O 33:06 [3] 3.5 km (9:27 / km)
shoes: VJ Bold 8 (dobbs)

Paul's migrating controls. This format is very silly :(

Saturday Dec 2, 2017 #

Note

Travel to Wales, 1 term down, 8 to go. Aside from running average/poorly at varsity, not much to report on from the term - will be interesting to see if I've got any faster for a few strong weeks and a few very weak ones.
3 PM

Running (out of date) 48:39 [2] 6.9 km (7:03 / km) +160m 6:19 / km
shoes: Asics GT-1000 5 (heavies)

First run up to island highpoint after arriving on/in/at Anglesey. Nice enough with some more elevation, but slow due to horrible choice of shoes and routes
