Orienteering race 1:26:54 [5] *** 7.7 km (11:17 / km)
spiked:20/27c shoes: Mudclaw O+340

ROC - Durand - Unwittingly took part in William's secret Billlygoat training program, which is fine since I was bummed that I missed this years BG. Anyway, the climb was as advertised and by about control #12 I was really struggling. It seemed that as soon as you were able to recover from topping a ridge you were already needing to climb the next one. Started to really pay attention to route choices at about that time.

Did not have any major problems - but misread the map at #3 to the tune of about 1 minute, took a horrible route to #8 which required me to crawl through the vegetation, and mistook re-entrant clues for spurs at a handful of controls. Overall a good physical challenge with some tough (but fair) control placements that made up for running an event within the limited space of Durand.

And lastly, the e-punching on the white course was a nice feature that was appreciated by Tyler (and me).

Orienteering (control p/u) 10:00 [1] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Really took it easy for this....

Biking 1:05:00 [3] 13.5 mi (4:49 / mi)

Ride in to work. First time trying this and it took a bit longer than I anticipated. Cold temps were not a factor and it was actually quite a nice morning ride. Distance is a guess for now.

Biking 1:00:00 [3]

Ride back home after work. The traffic was nasty on the short stretch of Rt 31 I was on and it has been a while since I have done any road riding. I was spooked to say the least.

Warm-up warm up/down 15:00 [3]

Mostly stretching

Orienteering race 1:24:54 [4] *** 8.4 km (10:06 / km)
spiked:14/19c shoes: PI Synchro Seek Trail

Chasing the Star - Long - South Mountain. I was mostly worried about leg cramps for the 3rd and longest event of the weekend, but paid attention to my water intake before (and during) the race and ate two bananas during the drive up. No cramps, but some tired feet. It was a rugged course. Ran pretty well and after some nav problems between 2 and 6, I settled in and had a decent run.

One thing about the orienteering portion of the meet that I really liked was the rec course set-up. First, Tyler got to run his first courses with e-punching and on Monday he got to experience the call up line with the all of the other runners. Although he is probably another year from doing a white course with a true shadow (rather than getting a bit more help), he was really excited about running the courses.

Overall, a fantastic weekend. The weather couldn't have been better and we met some great new people. The camping worked out perfectly with a nice open field for ball games and bunches of kids to play with. The kids can't wait for the next meet to see their new (and old) friends.
