Happy with performance. I was very careful in planning my routes and keeping contact with the map. Jogged fair amount, and all but 2 uphills were okay. Still had a little gas in my tank at finish and sprinted to punch. Biggest problem was not remember clue sheet symbol: i kept thinking it was a water filled depression, so wandered in reentrant for at least 10 minutes before remembering it was the top of the hill. So my navigation on this short leg was fine (I did have trouble reading the contours) but faulty thinking. Several pretty fast legs. Pleased with 5 to 6, a long leg. i took a mostly straight line to road near off limits buildings then took ditch down to strem, which i had trouble crossing. Control visible up hill when i got back to stream junctIon.

Very helpful sitdown with Keg Good after the course to compare. She was indredulous that she could have been faster than me but she was faster than the other two F65+ also, winning our age class. What did i learn? very interesting to compare routes and times.

Check the clue sheet for the feature and its placement, not just the control number!!! I def dont do all that.

Going around rather than over can be faster.

She rarely uses her compass.

Her route from 6 to 7 stayed high, counting reentrants, while I stayed low and counted ditches then headed up the spur. She had less elevation change.

The road from 1-2 was not as slow as I would have thought but i think my straight route was faster. keg took longer road then around ridge as did others. I did a pretty straight line though using the ridge to takem me to the reentrant across from the control. I was a little faster than keg. But i had a little trouble matching map and terrain on the first part if the straight route.

My goal had been to be slow and careful and do a clean course. Slow yes. 2 major relocations on controls 3 and 8, and a slow choppy leg to 4, and then trouble finding it when i was within 20 meters of it. I should have seen that 4 was almost on the back slope of the ridge. But then had great routes to 5, 6, and 7. But lost confidence on the reentrant to 7 and backtracked to check my location on the stream and lost at least 10-15 minutes there. Have no idea what I did on 8. I relocated to the stream junction and still had trouble. But suddenly I knew i was at the top of the stream and followed the reentrant into the control. If I hadnt felt the oressure of time/race, I might have enjoyed the terrain. Id like to go back and refollow the course properly next time. I was tired and my lumbar hurt by end. Stretching later made my legs cramp. Thiught id be wasred for Sunday but was fine,
