Long slow run around the river and through KP. Feeling pretty tired after about 5 hours sleep dreaming about retrenchments at work so I decided to shuffle around the flats for a while until I woke up. Saw tRicky and Tash leaving their car at UWA for some bike ride and saw Hubert Day on his bike a bit later. Got a bit worried that I might get caught on the wrong side of the bikes when I wanted to get into KP so I crossed over to UWA a bit early. Saw the lead few groups of bikes and it was a lot more spread out and casual looking than I expected so didn't really need to worry. Never really got going well but did get through the 90 minutes I planned.

Decided to do my tempo run at the Applecross metro series today. Had a tentative plan to head E/SE from the start and then around the North and it looked reasonable when I turned over the map so I went with it. Behind Sten, Harry and Dan Hewitt early on, Dan hasn't been for a few years and is obviously a bit rusty with his punching technique because I had to wait ages for him to punch at the first couple.

By the time I got down to Canning Bridge the others had either turned off or dropped behind so I had a clear road in front of me and was able to settle down to something like the half marathon pace I was aiming for. Wasn't really sure what to do around Pt Heathcote so stuck with my original plan and went 13-14-15 and around the river to 22.

Running past the wedding or whatever it was between 14 and 15 I could have sworn I heard someone in the crowd say "that's Craig Dufty". No idea if I was just hearing things or who it could have been if I really did hear it.

Wondered if I had made a tactical error going this direction as I battled the headwind around to 18 and 22. I think I saw Sten punching 22 but he was a fair way ahead and I guessed he had got at least as many as me. Contemplated going the long way around to 23 to flatten the climb but the steep bit was just out of sight as I left 22 so I stuck with the direct route.

Considered a few different options for the finish but couldn't work out which was best so stuck with my first thought which was 2-20-19-6-5-4. I did go the long way from 2-20 just to avoid turning around. As I came into 5 Sten came in from the other direction but I was pretty sure he was heading straight to the finish whereas I still had to get 4. Thought of following him just to give him a fright but I didn't want to have to run fast enough to scare him so I continued to 4 and came in about 1.5 minutes down.

Probably ran a lot of it at about my intended tempo pace but with enough harder sections when other people were around to make it feel close to a full race effort by the end.

Still feeling really tired, stiff and sore after tennis and not much sleep for the last week. Didn't get out the door until 6am and still wasn't really feeling ready for my planned session of 6x1k with 1min rest so I headed towards KP instead. Looped around the oval a little while I considered what to do but only committed to running easy for at least 20min before deciding. Got most of the way up the broadwalk before deciding to turn back and attempt a few intervals but starting at a fairly easy tempo pace.

Did 6x780m slightly uphill on bitumen/concrete with a 280m downhill sandy recovery jog. Started easy and gradually got faster as I warmed into it. Recovery jog felt a bit unnecessary early so I tried to keep it reasonably solid. Starting to feel like I needed the recovery after the third effort but tried not to slow them down and actually got slightly faster. Last couple of efforts were starting to feel like a good strong pace so ended up feeling like quite a good session.

Note
(rest day)

Didn't get to bed until after midnight after tennis last night and I just couldn't convince myself that getting up to go for a run was a good idea at 5am or even 6am. I don't want to be too much of a slave to the plan so a day off every now and then is probably a good idea anyway.

Pennants vs the other Mt Lawley team at home.
I thought they looked better than us warming up and in the early games but we played pretty well and came back from a set down to win in both of my doubles matches. In my singles I was getting hammered early but hung in there and got to a sudden death point to take the first set into a tie-breaker but lost. In the second set I was still on the defensive most of the time but got ahead and had 3 set points at 3-1 40-15 but lost. I was down in the tie-breaker but fought back to 4-4 and had the point won but pushed my forehand 10cm long to hand over the match. Ended up equal on rubbers and sets but went down 51 games to 48. Frustrating to know we would have won if I had just managed to clinch one of those 4 set points but overall I was happy with how I played and it was a good night of tennis.
