Running warm up/down 11:01 [2] 2.07 km (5:19 / km) +2m 5:18 / km
shoes: Nike Free 3.0 V5

Warm up lap of the island with Wayne.

Orienteering race 17:18 [5] 3.95 km (4:23 / km) +1m 4:22 / km
shoes: Nike Free 3.0 V5

NavDash long course at Black Swan Island which only actually went onto the island to finish. Started reasonably fast but I think I faded a bit in the second half. Nothing too tricky about the course, just left/right options which I think I got wrong a couple of times but I don't think there was more than a few seconds in it. Not many excuses to slow down so it really felt like a bit of a running race. Didn't expect to get near tRicky on a course like that so happy enough with second. Think I probably still need to find a bit more speed to be competitive at Gosnells. Knee was pretty good, barely noticed it really.

Orienteering warm up/down 15:46 [2] 2.79 km (5:39 / km) +10m 5:33 / km
shoes: Nike Free 3.0 V5

Not feeling up to another race so just jogged around the short course as a warm down. Started the same time as Phil and was going to follow him around but decided to go the other way to number 1. Thought my route would be slower so maybe ran a bit fast and got there before him. Then didn't want to lead him around so tried to get out of sight ahead instead by going through the green out of 3. Knee was a bit sore early on and a couple of other times but didn't keep hurting.

Running 19:09 [2] 3.1 km (6:10 / km)
shoes: Nike Free 3.0 V5

Little test jog around Rosalie Park. Pretty constant mild soreness when shuffling along and definitely worse when I tried to go a bit faster.
Probably not worth trying to race tomorrow but I'll probably do it anyway.

Note

Tried a little jog (~50m) but it was more painful than walking. Pain would probably ease if I kept going but it was bad enough to make me think that would be a bad idea.

Wednesday Jun 25, 2014 #

Note

Getting better but still sore walking.

Tuesday Jun 24, 2014 #

Note

Knee moving more freely but still quite sore walking.

Monday Jun 23, 2014 #

Note

Difficult to bend knee and very painful walking.

Orienteering race 53:54 [4] 7.69 km (7:00 / km) +307m 5:50 / km

H2 at Jumbuck Hill. Started ok but had a big stack about 5 minutes in trying to take the direct route from 1-2 because I thought the track option would be a bit boring. In hindsight, boring sounds pretty good. Caught my toe on a rock or branch then hit my arm on another branch when I threw it out to try to regain balance. This meant I had nothing to save me when I went down so I face planted pretty hard.

Fortunately my face hit a small soft patch amongst the rocks so just a bit of a swollen top lip where it was squashed against my left front tooth. Left knee was not so lucky with a bit of skin off and some significant bruising but nothing crippling. More little scrapes and bruises all over the left side but nothing serious. I lay still for about 30 seconds until I regained some composure and then moved on pretty gingerly.

Took it pretty slowly across to 2 but still managed to screw it up slightly and had fenry go through while I looped past losing a minute or two. Slow and inefficient up the hill to 3 with my knee causing me some pain as well as the same lower leg pressure build up I was struggling with at Malmalling. Had a few sharp pains on the outside of the knee on the steep slope coming into 3 and seriously considered pulling out at that point but decided to keep going a bit further to see if it continued.

Once over the top of the hill I started to feel a bit better and by the time I got to 5 I was almost orienteering normally again. Enjoyed the short downhill legs through 6-9 and felt quite good on the track to 10. Had a bit of a vague patch on leaving the track where I kept looking at the wrong part of the map but recovered and got the controls pretty well.

Took the track option to 12 which worked well and then saw fenry leaving 13 as I approached. I thought 14 was the last chance for a mistake so was careful here and stayed low while fenry went a bit high hoping to slip past unnoticed but he recovered well and got it before me. Started out direct to 15 then decided to try the right hand track route figuring there was no way I was getting past fenry going the same way. Thought it might have worked out when I didn't see fenry leaving as I approached 15 but that was just because he had got so far ahead.

One final injury on the way from the last control to the finish taking a branch in the groin. Hit right on middle stump but fortunately it (the branch) was soft enough to break off without any serious damage.

Finished 4 minutes down on fenry which doesn't seem so bad given the way it started. Left knee is pretty sore now but I think it is just bruising which will settle in a few days. Might not be doing much running this week though.
