Running long 1:15:28 [4] 16.28 km (4:38 / km) +82m 4:31 / km

Aiming for a faster paced long run this week so headed down to the river first. Felt like I was pushing pretty hard but the pace was still over 5min/km after 2k so I tried to pick it up a bit more. Ran into the masters athletics 15k road champs down on the river. Said Hi to Jim Langford at their turnaround point and then tried to catch up to Marg Saunders who I had seen running back the other way not too far ahead. Chatted to Marg up to the end of her race, said hi to Frank Gardiner as I ran past the finish and headed back through UWA to KP. Pace had probably been about right up to this point but of course I tried to keep the average up through the hills in KP and I think this was a bit too much. I did manage to knock a couple of seconds off the average pace by the finish but it was feeling more like a race than a solid effort by the end. Need to show a little more self control in future. Probably best to start out up a sandy hill so I can increase the pace without having to increase the effort much.

Tennis 1:30:00 [1]

Rosalie parents tennis competition playing mixed doubles with Rachel. First game in a long time so very rusty and had to play pretty conservatively just to try to keep the ball in play. Got through the round robin second in our group but after the last match we were thinking that Nic and Bronwyn may have thrown the first match to avoid the competitive side of the knockout round.
Got outclassed by a pair of 10 year olds in the quarter finals but they were disqualified for making us all look bad so we went through to the semis.
Had a couple of good games with Pip & Greg? before Greg did a calf and had to retire at 1-1. After a short delay Sam & Rob? substituted and we had a few more great games to get to 3-3 and deuce with a sudden death point to decide the match. Another great point with several tough gets before one ball just did not bounce when Rachel looked to have it covered. Sam & Rob went on to win the final but it seems any team with a genuinely competent player was not allowed to progress too far so the result was a bit arbitrary really.
Good fun day but I definitely need to play more often if I want to feel satisfied with my standard of play. Had no confidence in any of my shots so felt as though I was playing really tentatively which is not as much fun as when you are swinging freely.

Whiteman park nav dash. Good course with lots of short legs through little patches of bush made it a bit harder and more fun than I was expecting. Had a pretty good run. Didn't always go quite where I intended to and had a couple of little hesitations but no real mistakes. Never quite hit the speed I was hoping to but kept a pretty good sustained effort instead. Pretty happy to be only 43 seconds behind Sten and take a few fastest splits. Positive signs.

Lap of KP with Ivan after work. Started out pretty easy but the legs felt pretty good and I couldn't resist surging ahead when we hit a firmer section on the sand track going up the hill. Waited for Ivan to catch up but I was still feeling really good and had to throw in a few more surges and generally keep it rolling pretty fast because it just felt so damn good. Best bit was surging to go with a bike as we crested the hill on Park Ave. I love racing bikes. Most fun I've had in ages.
