Club Relays at Christmas Tree Creek, first leg.

Left home a bit later than planned due to hockey and baking commitments. Google was predicting we would arrive at 1:27pm with a mass start at 1:30pm. Rachel and I were running together meaning one of us had to run first so it was going to be tight. Liam was also running and we weren't sure if he would be first leg so hoped he wouldn't be but tried to be prepared in case he was. We were late telling Simon that we wanted to run so we weren't entirely sure we would even be registered.

Rachel was driving so I got myself completely ready to run so I could jump out of the car and run to the start. We arrived at the park gate at 1:28pm where Liam and I jumped out to run the 200m or so to the assembly area. I ran pretty hard to the start so I could try to work out what was happening while Liam caught up. Everyone was in the graveyard ready to start already but Penny had our team stuff ready to hand to me as soon as I ran in. Liam was running last so I just had to grab my number and SI card and keep going. Remembered to clear and check first (followed by Andre) and was trying to put my number on and find my map when the mass start went so I was last to leave the start but still in touch.

Felt a little rushed and disoriented leaving the start and through the first couple of controls but by number 3 I had passed Cameron and was starting to settle down. Cameron ran straight back past me up the next hill and then I struggled along behind for the next few controls. Graham and Daniel were also in front for a few controls but on a slightly different course. I was struggling to stay in touch on the climbs but edging closer on the downs and through controls.

Ended up getting clear of Cameron on the route choice over the dam wall. Almost overran the next control near the top of the knoll but realised just in time and ran in alone over the last downhill section about a minute up on Cameron but a minute down on Oliver who I only saw a couple of times crossing paths on a different course.

Relay, leg 3.

This one felt a lot more relaxed and controlled. Rachel held onto the one minute lead over Sten to send me out a minute ahead of Cameron. Felt better physically and it seemed pretty easy running around the same area again. Held onto the lead but couldn't extend the gap over Cameron at all so Rachel went out one minute ahead of Sten again on the last leg. Sten was always going to be faster than Rachel the second time around but Rachel made sure of it by making a mistake and then skipping a control. Liam's first leg runner also mispunched so as far as the inter club results go we might as well have just stayed home but I think we all had fun which is all that really matters.

Didn't really notice the heel at all while running but it did get very sore later.

Taping at Hill Park Dale. Evil insects on the far West side made it rather unpleasant for a while.

Muscle loss keeping up with fat gain at the moment. Soon I should have enough fat that lugging it around will maintain enough muscle to start gaining weight again.

Tennis 2:30:00 [1]

Wednesday night intra club doubles.
with Mark vs Chris & Robin 6-2 5-7, played ok.
with Woody vs Chris & Cam 2-6, horrendous (both of us).
with Iain vs Chris & Ian 6-3, played well.
Right knee sore most of the night. Left heel was pretty good but I expect it will be sore tomorrow.

I hate cycling in winter.
Tempted out by a bit of sunshine but actually hit the road just after it started raining and finished just after it stopped.

H1 at John Forrest. Got there very late after some rain delay at Liam's tennis tournament. Thought I would try to do the H3 but saw the H2 was only 1k further I thought I should do that, then the H1 was only another 1k so hard to say no. Was tempted to stick with the H3 to knock Simmo off the top but trying to knock Oliver off the top of the H1 seemed a more worthwhile goal.
Quite an enjoyable course although I struggled a bit with all the climb in the first half and it seemed pretty straight forward so I doubted my mix of walking and jogging was going to be enough to challenge Oliver. Splits show I was correct as I only won 2 of the first 10 splits and was almost a minute behind at that stage. Won 11 of the next 14 splits after turning downhill which was enough to put me 4 minutes ahead as Oliver seems to have slowed down a bit and made a few small mistakes.
I can't remember what happened but I have a bit of a graze/bruise just below the right knee where I seem to have knocked it on something. Quite sore now but I don't think it will be a problem for long.

Was thinking more about Liam's tennis than the orienteering this morning so didn't bring all my orienteering gear. Used a hire SI card and ran without a compass. Carried descriptions in my hand rather than trying to use those on the map.

Rachel dragged me out for a little run in KP. Not loving it early on but the second half was much better. Thank you Rachel.

Thought I might try to fit in a couple of hard laps around KP for lunch but on the way home I remembered Yeshi would be there. The thought of trying to change/shower/lunch while she cleaned was enough to put me off so I just rolled around Nedlands/Dalkeith in my work clothes for half an hour instead.

H3 at Jumbuck Hill.
Got there late after Amy's tennis tournament and I didn't think my heel would cope well with a long course in this terrain so just did the H3.
Started poorly, planned to contour left from the start but I felt I was having to go further left than I expected to get around the big boulder and dithered a bit thinking of going right on the track for a bit instead. Ended up sticking with the original plan but was never really sure where I was until I hit the cliffs just before and above the control so was a bit hesitant. 2, 3, 4 were good. 5 was slow at the end as I couldn't make sense of the rocks S of the control and thought I might be there when I still had a bit to go. Old map on TBT actually seems to match better what I was seeing here. Rest of the course was pretty good. I was very cautious early on 7 and then saw it from a distance so could have been more aggressive. Might have been faster heading N out of 7 and running more on the tracks but that would have been boring. Thought I could have done better getting out of the green leaving 8 but the splits suggest I did better than anyone else. Heel seemed to cope reasonably well, a bit sore at times but never bad.

Running 6:00 [2] 1.0 km (6:00 / km)

Put my cycling gear on to head out for a ride and then realised I had left my bike at work last night. Put some running shoes on and jogged to work in my cycling gear to retrieve the bike.

Cycling 51:07 intensity: (15:00 @1) + (10:00 @2) + (26:07 @3) 20.22 km (23.7 kph) +181m

A couple of laps of KP on the bike. Had thought about a third shorter lap up the road through the middle but by half way around the second lap I had a bit of a battle to convince myself to complete the lap rather than turning off at Saw Ave.

School cross country training. Heel wasn't too sore but trying to drag Amy around was very painful. Everyone else had gone by the time we finished.
