SA Long Champs at Mack Creek. Wanted to just treat this as a long run and take it real easy but I knew that I wasn't really capable of doing that. Took the conservative track route to 1 and tried to take it pretty easy but I was still stuffed by the time I got to 3. Chased a couple of emus along the track between 5 and 6 for about 200m which slowed me down a bit as I didn't want to get too close and they didn't seem too scared of me. Left the track at the bend and had a herd of goats run with me most of the way in to the control. Rest of the course was pretty uneventful. Didn't always follow the best lines through the bush but found all the controls ok. Biggest time losses were probably rolling my ankle a couple of times and having to walk for a minute or two while it recovered, first between 7 and 8 and then again between 13 and 14 I think. Definitely felt I could have gone faster at times but I was pretty tired by the end so it may not have made me any faster overall. Ended up 6th I think but a long way behind Rob W in 5th so I was never going to place any higher. Still gives me some hope of a top 10 next week.

Australian Middle Champs at Lady Alice Goldfield. Just cruised around but probably couldn't actually have gone much faster judging by my heart rate. No real mistakes but got a bit wobbly over the last third of the course. Came last of the A division in 16th, less than 2min behind 6th and more than 7 minutes ahead of 17th.

Set out intending to do about 90 minutes really slowly but I was enjoying exploring so when I got a bit tired after about 90 minutes I still had to find my way back from Sawyers Valley. Getting a bit stiff and sore around the ankles and knees towards the end but still felt reasonably fresh. Really had to fight the urge to run faster for the last hour.

WA Long Champs at Malmalling. Pretty solid run, lost about 40 seconds on 13 but nothing else of significance. Decided to push it hard today and not worry about my heart. Got really tired for a while around number 8 but tried to push the long leg after that hard and didn't feel too bad for the rest. Won by about 8 minutes which makes 13 WA long titles and 6 in a row.
Course was pretty easy, way short and seemed a bit familiar. Got the map out from an event in 2008 and found half the controls and about one third of the legs were nearly identical. The 2008 course also had a little pivot loop which was identical to one on the girls course today. A bit disappointing for a state championship.

WA Middle Champs at Malmalling SW. Good through the first 4. A bit off line to the left through the middle part of 4-5 but could see it from a distance. Approached 7 through the green instead of through the clearing which made it a bit hard to spot. Climbed a bit too much crossing the spur between 7 and 8, almost went much higher but realised something wasn't right. A bit hesitant on 11 and 12 but went pretty much straight to them. Saw the control on the boulder south of the last from a distance and ran for that but realised where it was before I got there so didn't really lose time as it allowed me to run with confidence. Overall happy with the run. A lot of features were quite difficult to see so I thought most people would lose some time somewhere. Thought my losses were small enough to give me a good chance of winning and so it proved. Best part of the run was having no problems with my heart.

H1 at Spice Brook. A bit wobbly out of the start. Took a crazily wide route to 2 because I was put off by the extra green on the way to 1 and I was already getting a bit tired. Small miss on 3, distracted by the stream of trail bikes on the small track above it. A bit off line on 9, intended to go high and run down the creek to be safe but didn't need to go right past 11. Small hesitation on 10 but someone else found it for me within a few seconds. Rolled my ankle a bit coming into 12, getting very tired and stopped watching where I was going to look at the trail bikes going past. Walked and jogged slowly through the next few while the ankle recovered. Definitely needing a rest by this stage anyway. Ankle was starting to come good by 16 but my legs weren't so I struggled home contemplating the foolishness of entering elites at the Aus champs.
Course was way too long for me today, I'd really had enough by about number 6. Probably started out at the pace I could have run 6 months ago and then ran out of steam. Should try to start more conservatively in my next longer race. Navigation wasn't too bad but it is all pretty easy in this terrain.

Putting out tapes for nomads training this afternoon. Felt tired and very rusty with the navigation. Took a lot longer than expected mostly because I had a lot of trouble deciding where to put the tape on several controls, just could not make sense of the mapping.
