Oceania Middle Champs.
Managed to hold onto my card all the way around today but I also managed to get the wrong map at the start. Still not sure if it was my fault. I realised on the way to the first control because the description didn't match the feature so checked the descriptions on the map. I think I had a course 6 map instead of course 5. Matt Bixley also got the wrong map but he got course 4 which had the first 3 controls the same so he didn't realise until number 4. My brother had the wrong map the day before but just went on and did that course anyway and was surprised to find that he got a valid result out of it. Still doesn't know what happened there.
Anyway, I ran back to the start and grabbed a new map which cost about 1:25 but I was a bit all over the place for the first few controls, just rushing off and trying to relocate all the time. Didn't really start to settle down until about 5 or 6 but didn't really make any significant mistakes either, maybe 30 seconds or so through 3 & 4 and a few more seconds on a couple of later controls.
A bit surprised to finish as high as 4th in the end. Should have been able to get second but was never going to get near Bruce.

Oceania Long Champs at Kangaroo Crossing.
Started steadily enough. Slight misses on 3 and 5 but nothing serious. Aimed off to the right on 6 and contoured into it but when I went to punch I realised that I had nothing to punch with. I wasn't aware at all of losing it but guessed I must have pulled it off by grabbing onto a branch going down the steep slope through green so tried to retrace my steps. I couldn't remember exactly where I went so went all the way back to 5 and then several times up and down the slope on different lines but no luck.
Saw Jono coming through on my first pass and asked if he had seen it, then saw him again much later when he came back to help after doing his ankle near 7.
I eventually gave up some time after seeing Carsten and Bruce go through. I thought about trying to run the rest of the course and even took splits at a few controls but I felt crap after all my walking around and my head wasn't in it so I just jogged through to 10 and then cut across to the finish.
Very frustrating. Felt as though today was going to suit me quite well.

Orienteering 31:22 intensity: (19:41 @1) + (3:22 @2) + (3:34 @3) + (4:45 @4) 2.09 km (14:59 / km) +30m 13:59 / km

I want interested in running around in the heat again so I followed Amy around a few of her controls instead. She wasn't very interested either so we skipped most of the course and just had a race up the finish chute. I had her covered pretty easily really. Amy ran one second slower than Liam so I would have been about the same as him.

Senior boys course from the schools Long Champs.
I had thought about trying to run more aggressively from the start today but it was way too hot for that so just assumed for getting around as efficiently as possible instead. Started at the same time as Krystal and kept seeing her through the first 8 controls without ever really running with her. I got a little gap after 8 and ran the rest mostly alone. Pretty average run for me, not always super efficient but no real mistakes. Never really felt as though I was pushing hard but was still shattered by the end just due to the heat I think.
Would have been 8th in the senior boys about 6 minutes down which is a pretty good result for me these days. I set out thinking 50 would be about par.

Oceania/Aus Relays on the same map as yesterday.
Running second leg in the Australian M45 team with Matthew Stocks and Bruce Arthur. Matthew made one big mistake and came in about two minutes down on the Kiwi team. I knew Bruce could make up that gap so I just needed a steady run to keep us within reach. I didn't rush anything, didn't make any mistakes and didn't run very fast up the hills. Apparently got past the kiwis somewhere without noticing and Bruce extended the lead running a couple of minutes faster than me despite a 2 minute error.

ahr:150 max:166 shoes: Salomon Speedcross 4

Australian Long Champs at Split Rock, 3rd in M45.
I was happy with this run. I wasn't really conscious of doing anything wrong but I did lose a bit of time on 5. I started cautiously but was feeling more comfortable by 2 and confident through 3 & 4 but then took a really conservative route to 5 going back up the gully past 2. Not sure why I did it because I had run through the area I was trying to avoid on the way to 2 and it was fine. I think I just started with a bit too conservative a mindset and hadn't got out it by then. Maybe a more aggressive start could have gained me the minute I was behind in the end or maybe it was the conservative mindset that got me so close. Who knows. Anyway, I was pretty happy to be so close behind Carsten and Bruce as I think they are both moving a fair bit faster than me.

Oceania Sprint Champs.
A scrappy run with lots of little time losses but nothing major. Lost a bit more than I thought on a couple of legs. Would have had to be a really good run to place any higher.
