Indoor Sprint
Monash University, Clayton
Fantastic fun. Complex indoor terrain with more to think about than just stair cases, including slopes, irregular shapes and one way passages.
The only thing that spoilt the race was a locked door at the 1st floor of the B set of stairs. It was mapped as passable, but was self locking. It required someone to have pressed a button that was only accessible on one side, and even then you had to know what to look for about 5m away to the side. This cost Mason about 1 minute, and me about 40 seconds. It impacted many others, but not everyone, so the results were a bit skewed because of this.
These details would need to be closely monitored if there was ever a major championship. It was just a bit of fun, but frustrating to lose by 2 seconds because of this.
I passed through the door once with no problems (as I think someone else opened it before me), so I was quite shocked to find that it did not open when I returned to it just 20 seconds later! This unsettled me for the complex leg from 3-4 as I had not looked at other options other than the B stairs. I then headed for the D stairs, but this was only a one-way passage. These were marked on the map with chevrons, but I found these hard to read at running speed so I missed that detail.
I lost map contact from 14-15 from being turned around in the stairs and hesitated for 5 seconds.
My route from 15-16 going east and south around the building was non optimal. I didn't spot the exit at the E stairs, so lost another 5 seconds.
From 19-20 I took the shortest route through the classroom but encountered a door that I had to stop at and open. If I had taken the open door on the east wall I may have saved 2 seconds and been close enough for the win.
Still the small time losses felt insignificant when I lost so much time at the locked door from 3-4.
