NZ Queen's Birthday
Day 3 Middle
M40A
3rd place, 2.5 mins behind Darren Ashmore and 2 mins behind Carsten.
I lost 1m40s on #1 looking for the forest track. I tried to make the first one easy, but the forest track had disappeared. So I just ended up running 250m further for no benefit. In fact it threw me a bit and I had to be extra careful to find #1.
#2 was a tricky depression in young pines, so I was a little slow to be sure that I didn't miss it. Carsten was running hard and caught me 2 mins by this control.
I overtook him twice when he made some mistakes at 5 and 9, but he was stronger than me in the rough open. However, I was able to keep up with him in the white forest. The orienteering was also easier here, so Carsten didn't make any further mistakes. I tried to make some ground, but given he has a 27 min 10km time to his name in his younger days, I was not surprised too much.
Today's results was much better than Saturday, as I was 3 minutes ahead of all of the Senior Boys.
So overall 2nd place in M40 for the 4 races, with 2 wins in the sprints, and 2 3rd places in the sand dunes.
