Spring Into Sprint Race #4
Westgate Park
Bruce 13:20
Brodie 13:23
Bryan 13:48

Another great fun event, and one of my few wins for the year. With my birthday yesterday, hopefully this is a good sign for the next year.

I felt better than any other sprint race this series. My hamstring tightness has settled down, and I enjoyed being able to run at full speed. I took advantage of this late in the course, when I pushed hard in the easier parts and gained a few seconds on Brodie in the splits.

I noticed that I lost 10 seconds (on a 20 second leg) to the fastest split on leg 3-4. I went left and lost no time. The right hand route could not have been much faster.

My run was not perfect. I hesitated on the way to 9. The track was now covered in large piles of mulch. I lost direction on the sprint leg 17 and was 20m too far left. I suspect that my left route choice to 20 was too slow due to the windy single track, and right would have been faster.

Orienteering 45:35 [2] * 6.2 km (7:21 / km) +45m 7:06 / km

On the way home from Westgate Park, Nicola and I were discussing Park & Street Orienteering. I mentioned that I have been attending the Thursday night series this season.
We realised that this Thursday was at Westgarth and wondered who might be organising it. It turned out that it was our club. I recalled a discussion in August about this, but the committee had not confirmed any details since then.
I decided that I should contact Jasmine and offer to course set.

I set the course on paper, and then jogged around to check control sites. I have hidden my GPS track so that you can't cheat!
I am planning to set the first 10 controls as a scatter course as usual, but the last 10 controls will be a sprint course on Johnson Park and Westgarth Primary.

One added complication is that one of the portable classrooms moved on Friday and the map had to be updated. Appartently it was moved to make way for another portable that may arrive between now and the event on Thursday. Just another challenge for the course setter!

A couple of 2km surges at sub 4min/km pace.
I could feel some hamstring fatigue after a while at this pace so I didn't push this too far.
