Orienteering race 1:02:33 [5] ** 12.85 km (4:52 / km) +227m 4:28 / km
Woodlands Historic Park
State Series #6, Medium Distance
A high intensity race that had a few difficult controls near the end that required careful navigation. The first 45 minutes tested those that could run, and I was satisfied that I could move faster than all of the field except for Bryan on these legs.
I had the fastest splits on most of the technical legs of the course, and the last long leg, where I went left of the fence and put my foot down along the track. Bryan was quicker on the long legs to 4 and 6.
The course was quite easy in the first half. I found time to look at my Garmin a few times as I tried to push my average km rate down towards 4:30 min/km.
Some may not like Woodlands, but they are probably the orienteers that can not run particularly fast. Those people will get their chance at Yackandandah in a couple of months. I think that Woodlands is ideally accessible and provides some great variety in terrain quite different from what we usually get in Victoria.
