Orienteering race (BADO street-o) 53:48 [3] *** 9.08 km (5:56 / km) +54m 5:45 / km
ahr:140 max:156 spiked:18/25c

Odds-and-evens scoring, which was new to me and the main reason I went to this event. You do all the odds first, then the evens, or the other way around, your choice. (Thinking again, of course it means you get twice the running out of a limited area.)

I should've put some fresh batteries in my head torch, not checked it since last winter and it was rather weak compared to most here, getting worse and worse as the run went on :-( Perhaps I should invest in some serious wattage from eBay.

Good event, proper map and separate control descriptions, although I planned a bit ineffectively and wasn't feeling fast. Started anti-clockwise with the evens but missed two and then changed to clockwise for the odds, also missing two. Lost one control inamongst bushes in a cul-de-sac at around 40 minutes gone (+4min) and rather cruised home after that. Scored 400 out of a possible 500 and parked up.

Orienteering race (Wormley Woods Short brown) 1:16:02 [4] *** 10.46 km (7:16 / km) +200m 6:38 / km
ahr:147 max:160 spiked:15/22c

Short brown (M50). Nominal 8.6km/155m

Drifted R for #3 and looped to find the right pit (+60s). A bit low for #5, +20s. Planned to follow an earth bank S to a pond attackpoint for #8, but drifted L and failed to find either, ended up thrashing about in green, realised what I'd done when I saw I was too close to the open area to the E (+2:30). Pretty thick forest made slow going for #8, #9, #10, #11.

Followed the earth bank for #12 which should've been at the end of it (described as junction of two earth banks) but when I got there, there was a RAFO runner already looping to find it. Eventually we located the control in the wrong place, 100m E, at the junction of two ditches! (+4:00, game over). In the download queue I found if you were on blue you'd have approached from the E and found it OK, will be interesting to see it on routegadget.

After that, not too bad. Stuck in brambles/stream exiting #17, and a bit unsure of path junctions on the way to #19.

Result 10th/26. http://www.chig.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#39&cour... Mildly annoyed that without the obvious errors I'd have made it into the top 5 on that course. Maybe I should just've run the longest course, they didn't visit 118 >:-)

Orienteering race (TVOC Kingswood) 34:14 [4] *** 4.14 km (8:16 / km) +171m 6:51 / km
ahr:149 max:163 spiked:13/18c

Green, Nominal 3.4km/155m

Numerous indistinct thickets and all the minor paths hidden under fallen leaves made this quite a technical challenge for a Saturday Series.

Didn't turn far enough L out of #6 for #7, missed the minor path I had to cross too, had to loop back. Cautious approach to #13 hidden behind a rootstock, although I was right on line. Messed up #14 - driven too far R by the undergrowth (should've gone L) and relocated off the open area above it after looping to check another control (not mine). Hopeless to #17 - jinked too far R off the open area above and had to fight windblown branches down the marked ditch to the control. Then S instead of SW to find a big path and left myself too much uphill for #18. Poor.

Result: 10th/43, Nigel B went round in a bonkers 22:52. Even if I'd known where all the controls were I couldn't have matched that. http://www.tvoc.org.uk/application/documents/event...
