Orienteering race (Oxford City Race (SEOUL)) 49:01 [4] ** 10.3 km (4:46 / km) +39m 4:40 / km
ahr:159 max:168 spiked:21/25c

Course 2, provisional 6.9km.

Probably a last chance to improve my SEOUL score, and I’d worked out I needed a top-10 to improve, which seemed unlikely given my recent injury-hampered prep and a very strong field (going for UKUL points). I had Paul Gebbett (current MV league leader) off 5 minutes behind me, so my main aim was that he wouldn’t catch me too badly!

Effing cold, I’d barely warmed up after cycling into town and jogging about for 10 minutes, and then slightly distracted in start staging by a newby in the lane next to me who wanted to know what the control symbols meant.

Overran the correct bush/thicket for #1 (+20s), then a poor route choice for #5 (+30s, up and down stairs in the science area, when around would’ve been better). Managed to overrun the entrance to the college for #14 having already picked a poor route out of #13 (+60s). So much fast running and hamstring starting to tighten up, I was feeling it by this stage. Avoided the trap at #19 as we had a control near there in last year’s OUOC race. Brainfart at the penultimate control, thumb over #24 so ran straight to #25. Did wonder why Terry Hosking was running to #25 out of a thicket to my left (when I knew he’d likely be on my course, although much slower). D’oh.

At least Paul G didn’t catch me, looks like he gained about a minute, so not too bad I guess. And I was less than a minute slower than Nigel Bunn in the preliminary results. Gonna be a different story at Shotover tomorrow.
