Orienteering 19:21:24 [3]

WRC 2017 in Latvia. Placed 184th/410 teams, got 206 points where top team had 427points. First 3 places are all Latvians.

After few controls we quickly figured that the most of orange on the map are super nasty, slower than white (open forest) that there were 8ft tall grass field that we have to swim through or high grass (stinging nettle and hogweed) on very uneven ground that traps my feet. It really sucked that we planned to go though a lot of orange area... so we adjusted the approach and tried to stay on trails and do dog legs to punch through short green areas. Some of the trails on the map were very overgrown and they were hard to find. After midnight, lucky there were some elephant trails leading to next controls. We often looked for that instead of going long way around. The race area was very flat and not many hills and they were about 50m high at most so my quads and hams didnt get sore at all. There were many swamps but we managed to stay out of them except one that we went into thigh deep... lots of beaver dam crossing. We did very well navigation-wise, we made only one nav mistake that we got confused with one new road that was not on the map. We didnt run at all for fisrt 12hrs beacuse it was super hot and humid and small trails were easy to miss. We refilled water at every water controls since we were drinking a lot. My battry died around 5am (dark btw 9pm and 6am) and tried to change the battries and figured out my petzle battries are not interchangeble... only rechrgeble via usb crap... luckly James had a spare Lupine with 30% left. We went into HH around 7am to have some real food since James was tired and super hungry. After a 30min break I was ready to go but James was not wanting to keep going... which is so unusual. I had another 3 or 4hrs of running energy and mental strength (we could have got another 22 points easily) but James was done (low enery and sore feet)... so we decide to punch the finish.

After all, I had fun, lucked with the weather that no rain! It was too bad we finished so early but there is always next time.
