Adventure Racing race (Transition) 50:00 [0]

Very slow transition in a harbour.

Adventure Racing race (Trekking) 7:15:00 [3] 23.0 km (18:55 / km) +530m 16:58 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 4 blue/gr

Left Ares harbour in cold and wet conditions. Didn't get far before we got sleep monsters. 15 min sleep and then 45 min in a graveyard. USWE came past during the last one. After getting going again we soon passed Team TTR sleeping in an underpass, so we were back in 7th again. Nav went okay but we were very sluggish.
9 AM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 51:00 [0]

Got back into the shopping mall in Ferrol to find USWE serving out a 2h penalty (last transition). Managed to get things done pretty quickly and get out on our bikes in 6th place, probably about 30 mins ahead of USWE.
10 AM

Adventure Racing race (MTB) 5:24:00 [3] 47.0 km (6:54 / km) +1200m 6:07 / km
shoes: Specialized Epic FSR Mthn 2014

The stage sent us back up into the mountains. All going well but USWE got the jump on us on a very wide route choice leg that I didn't see. We ended up with more up and down whilst they contoured around behind some out of bounds roads. Started getting very wet again towards the end as we approached As Pontes.

So a bit of a disappointing result with 7th overall in the end. Really needed to beat USWE, but didn't pull it off in the end. The big negative for us was loosing contact on the first night to the top teams due to early sleep monsters.

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 10:00 [0]

Arrived at first light into the outdoor transition in 10th place in heavy rain. Simple bike drop and shoe change, so we were fast (saw USWE leaving transition as we arrived). The American team on the short course were trying to catch some sleep under a space blanket in the mud. :-O

Adventure Racing race (Orienteering) 1:46:00 [3] 8.0 km (13:15 / km) +250m 11:28 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 3 grey/or

A simple O section with only 3 cps on a coastal scrub and forest map. Kept it simple as the scrub was very spiky. Caught USWE at the furthest point, they out-trekked us, but caught up on a better line back into transition.
8 AM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 4:00 [0]

Super quick back onto the bikes, so that we left ahead of USWE in 9th position.

Adventure Racing race (MTB) 3:22:00 [3] 37.0 km (5:28 / km) +980m 4:49 / km
shoes: Specialized Epic FSR Mthn 2014

Short and quick bike leg. We made a route choice error early on that allowed USWE to get ahead, but we powered past them on the first technical ridgeline climb. Got a good gap before transition.
11 AM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 1:00:00 [0]

A transition in a shopping mall. :-D

Arrived in 9th to find out that Omjakon had withdrawn. We also had a good transition and left ahead of Issy, so we were now up to 7th.
12 PM

Adventure Racing (Trekking) 8:19:00 [3] 33.0 km (15:07 / km) +750m 13:35 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 4 blue/gr

Some sleepmonsters in the team walking out of town (despite it being midday). On the outskirts we took a different route choice to the first CP by climbing the hill before descending down stairs to the bottom of the waterfall whilst everyone else had come from below. Doesn't seem there was much difference in time. After that the course followed the valley uphill before a final up and down into the Eume gorge again. We tiger-lined the last section and dropped through some fantastic Atlantic Forest where other teams had zig-zagged down on an overgrown track. The followed the river down a bit to the Transition.
8 PM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 20:00 [0]

Should have been quicker in this transition. Still in 7th with no other teams in sight.
9 PM

Adventure Racing race (Kayaking) 3:48:00 [3] 25.0 km (9:07 / km)

Paddled the last section of the Eume river into the Betanzos bay. Nice to get it with the tide and with the last lick of daylight. Then across the bay with a side swell and some wind before picking up a CP slightly up another river. Saw Team TTR ahead of us paddling away from the CP. Low-tide here which slowed us down. On the way back across the bay, I got big sleep monsters, despite the 5ft swell in the pitch black. Saw the chasing USWE team paddling towards the CP.

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 3:21:00 [0]

Long transition (map plotting, tried unsuccessfully to get sleep). Left in 9th position as USWE were still in transition.
9 AM

Adventure Racing race (MTB) 3:04:00 [3] 28.0 km (6:34 / km) +1000m 5:35 / km
shoes: Specialized Epic FSR Mthn 2014

A short bike leg with a monster climb up to a view point on a peak before back down to a harbour town.
12 PM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 10:00 [0]

A very quick transition onto foot in a sports hall.

Adventure Racing race (Trekking) 3:53:00 [3] 15.0 km (15:32 / km) +700m 12:36 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 3 grey/or

A loop trek in a coastal peninsula region. Very humid as the rain had stopped for a while and the sun came out as we climbed the first hills. Some massive sea cliffs and tough nav in one place.
4 PM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 1:02:00 [0]

Another moderately fast transition back onto our bikes. Found out that 24-Hour Meals team (Urtzi) had pulled out here, so we were up to 8th.
5 PM

Adventure Racing race (MTB) 12:24:00 [3] 70.0 km (10:38 / km) +2600m 8:58 / km
shoes: Specialized Epic FSR Mthn 2014

A long bike leg through the night. First across to the west coast. It started pouring rain here so we stood on top of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, but with only 10m visibility. The dropping down to a small pilgrimage village below the cliffs before a hike-a-bike back up the cliffs. Raced hard towards last night (some time after 10pm) across more rolling terrain. About midnight found a tavern where we shouldn't have stopped (closing, so no time to sleep on the floor, about 1h wasted with faffing). Then slept in a half-built house about an hour later for 90 min. Issy and USWE passed whilst we slept. After that a visit to a lighthouse before more rolling terrain to the next Foot-O leg on the coast. Lots of possible route choice options on the bike.

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 17:00 [0]

Got into transition in 8th after passing a team on the O' course. Left in the same position.

Adventure Racing race (MTB) 6:57:00 [3] 58.0 km (7:11 / km) +1460m 6:23 / km
shoes: Specialized Epic FSR Mthn 2014

Team struggled with the cycling through the night. Lots of sleep deprivation that saw us loose time and places. Got caught by Sweco and another team shortly after going down for a 15 min sleep. Got into T4 in 10th place.
8 AM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 56:00 [0]

In 10th, out in joint 11/12th.
9 AM

Adventure Racing race (Trekking) 20:40:00 [3] 64.0 km (19:23 / km)
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 3 grey/or

Left transition with heavy packs with abseil gear and wetsuits for the kloofing section. Left at the same time as Sweco in joint 11/12th. Lots of climb over a few mountains before reaching the canyon where we were 12th down the rope after a bit of a delay. Sweco got an injury in the kloof and had to bail whilst we also caught another team (Issy). The weather started changing as we got to the coast again and the heavens opened just before night. Got shelter/food and slept for about 90 mins in the foyer of a B&B in the first town after a river / lagoon crossing. Re-caught Issy soon after who had passed us whilst we slept. Lots of clifftop walking after that before another lagoon mouth swim when it was pumping. Then into T5 in 10th place.

Note

Raid Gallaeica ARWS race in Gallaecia Spain with Team Cyanosis (Mac, Nathan, Susan C-B).
10 AM

Adventure Racing race (Trekking) 1:03:00 [4] 11.0 km (5:44 / km) +400m 4:51 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 4 blue/gr

Started in the town of As Pontes with a 11km trekking leg. Fast pace out of town and we settled down into 10-12th up the first hill and down the other side to the river.
11 AM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 3:00 [0]

Very quick transition into paddling kit, moving up from 12th to 9th place in T1.

Adventure Racing race (Kayaking) 6:33:00 [3] 48.0 km (8:11 / km)

First section of the Eume river was narrow with a few easy rapids and we made good time. Then a dam with a portage. We hadn't tested the portaging trolleys and we fluffed this badly, loosing about 4 places. Then back in the river back to As Pontes, and then another portage (back was already stuffed, needed to use backrests) onto the flooded lignite quarry for an out and back. Then down the overflow and back into the river for a further long paddle to the takeout. Overall some good paddling where we moved up to 7th by the quarry and then 4th when the leaders too a wrong turn on the river (Sweco, Omjakon, Blackhill/Opavanet).
6 PM

Adventure Racing race (Transition) 14:00 [0]

Transition onto foot felt slow, but we somehow moved up in positions in the melee. Left with team Naturex thinking we had about 5 ahead of us, but we were in tied 2nd, with only Estonia ACE ahead.

Adventure Racing race (Trekking) 7:10:00 [3] 35.0 km (12:17 / km) +1700m 9:53 / km
shoes: Salomon Sense Mantra 4 blue/gr

Very hilly trekking leg. We started dropping down the leader board straightaway as we had slower speed. Just after dark we started an O' section but I immediately made a small mistake and missed a path. Lost about 15 min and contact with a bunch (Omjakon, etc.) and thus down to 9th place. O' wasn't too enjoyable, bad and outdated map.
