spiked:20/26c shoes: VJ Bold 7

Joensuu-Jukola 2017, 3rd leg, 12,5km

My dad on the first leg and and muru on the second, both did exactly like expected and I started at 3.30am.

Run to the start was nice, decided to just run and look at the map later!

From start to number 1 was a looooong leg. I made my plan pretty fast though and I think it wasn't too bad. Hesitated a bit on the way though. Climbed up to the path, then running on the path I got really confused when I passed a laavu (fireplace type of building) and I couldn't see it on the map. Only found it after my run, it was tiny! Because of that I hesitated at two path junctions, unsure of where I was. Finally found the place I planned to leave the path at and cut to another path. Then running on another path until I came to a hill which I decided not to climb and instead went around. Then another path until I came to a veg change and also a pretty clear track towards where I needed to go. Followed that and found one control on the way, I think the track was headed there originally. Between two out of bounds areas and to a field, there was a clear track through the field. Then following a ditch until I came to the corner of white part and cut through small bit of green to get to another white part and my first control!

1-2. Took a bearing and followed a track, pretty straight forward.

2-3. To a path, the control wasn't too far from it and there was a clear track going to it.

3-4. Easy.

4-5. Left the lake and started climbing uphill when some people continued more straight. I heard two people behind me saying they were going to my control and when one of them passed me I just followed. I started to think I was too high but didn't stop, I should've. Realised I was way too high when I was almost at the top of the hill and found a path so needed to come back down.

5-6. Through the open bit. Then most people continued more straight but I climbed down almost straight away. I think it was a safe choice since the control was easy to spot when I was at the right level already.

6-7. I don't actually really remember this leg. I think I was just following a track and loads of people since I knew everyone had number 7 since it was just before a drink station.

Took my first gel here.

7-8. Took the road, easy.

8-9. Everyone else went up the hill so I did too. Looking back I should've taken the road, there was no point in climbing the super steep hill..

9-10. From the control to the path and then following the paths until following a track through the marsh to the control.

10-11. Through the marsh. Ended up a bit too left on the other side but I'm really happy how fast I noticed it and corrected straight away!

11-12. I planned on going straight. Ended up following a wrong track though since ended up too low following the dark green veg change. Noticed it fast though and corrected pretty well.

12-13. Followed a track to the power line. Following the power line for a small bit and then most of the people continued straight when I left the line and cut left to the road. Wasn't sure if I could go through the sandy bit so I went around left. Looking back I could've gone straight through too.

13-14. Took my second gel leaving the control. Following the small sandy bit and then just following a track to the control.

14-15. My biggest mistake. Followed a track but turned out to be a wrong track. Started to hesitate already on the way and then found another control. Someone in front of me realised faster where we were and was kind enough to tell me too that we were too far left. Bailed to the path and back towards the control.

15-16. Easy running on a path, took some water at the drink station.

16-17. There was a clear track going through the green.

17-18. To a path, across and to another path. Everyone else seemed to continue straight across here but I turned left and run downhill a small bit until I came to a drink station. Didn't drink but used it was a known point and took a bearing towards the control. There wasn't really a track in the forest but I think this was a good route choice since it was easy to follow the slope, find a green area and then find the control.

18-19. This was a tricky leg. Following the slope, wasn't quite sure where I was. I found one control on the way but wasn't mine. Then found big cliffs and realised I had gone past my control, back a small bit and there it was.

19-20. Pretty much followed a track over the bare rock. Lots of people around here but no one seemed to be going to my control.

20-21. I think I took my third gel somewhere here. Followed the paths until I came to a veg change and there was a clear track going to the control. Later I saw on tv that the top teams picked this route too so not too bad! (some of them cut a corner but I think for my tiny legs it was actually smarter to just follow the path)

21-22. Don't remember this so I presume I just took a bearing and followed a track.

22-23. Went a bit too much right. Then crossed a ditch and realised where I was and corrected.

23-24, 24-25, 25-26 All pretty straight forward, just running on paths. Or well, I wasn't running, mostly walking, since I knew the run to the finish would be a long one and needed to be able to run in front of all those people!

Finished after 2hrs 24mins which was faster than I thought I would be!! Original plan was about 2,5hrs and then after Joensuu training weekend I changed it to 3hrs.

All in all I had fun and I think especially orienteering-wise pretty good run!!! Good route choices and when I made mistakes I corrected them fast. Didn't do any of those "running around for 10mins close to a control but just not seeing it" and I only found three or four extra controls and I knew with almost all of those that they weren't gonna be mine. Knew where I was like 98% of time which is definitely better than earlier years.

Fitnesswise couldve been better but wasn't too bad still! Only took three gels, I had more with me but didn't feel like I needed them. Legs started to get heavy towards the end though but this was my longest orienteering ever! Physically this was easier than I expected though.

It was super fun! At like control 19 I started to realise I didn't have that much left and I still hadn't really had any proper climb so I opened my whole map and was actually surprised to see I wouldn't be climbing Harpatinvaara at all!! And then at control 23 I suddenly realised I only had 3 controls left and I actually thought like oh is this over already!

Our whole team did really well!! First time we only had one runner in the second mass start, we got our 6th runner out with only 1,5mins to spare before the changeover closed! And we stayed in top1000! I was around 1220. on my leg.

Next year it's Lahti and familiar forest. And hopefully two teams for Rastiaasit!
