A few firsts out orienteering today
1) first time orienteering in such solid rain that I sometimes had trouble hearing the box beep. Pittsburgh area forecasted to get 2 inches today :o.
2) First time crossing a minimally sized water feature on the map that ended up being waste deep and having a current. I didn't have any trouble, but from talking afterwards it sounds like it greatly depended on where you crossed. Got to cross it 3 times.
3) First time being able to answer the question "If a tree falls in the forest"... and almost hits you, what happens? Btw 12 and 13 I heard a creaking sound and decided to run for it without stopping to look at where it was. A ~4in diameter tree ended up falling immediately next to me, no more than a foot away, and scaring the daylights out of me. I yelled and next thing i knew Yaki popped out of the bushes (only person I saw the entire time) and asked "Did a tree just fall on you?!". I said something along the lines of "No, but it was darn close" and continued running. Turns out, your heart rate spikes and you lose focus completely, because I completely muffed the last 2 controls for an aggregate of 20ish minutes mistakes. I'll take a pass due to the tree.
4) First time being in burrs so thick they (1) stuck to my rain coat and (2) got embedded in my hair. Syd gave me a haircut this evening.
Despite the trials and tribulations I still had a good time and it was a welcome way to get away from unpacking for a bit.
