Orienteering (scouting) 1:03:00 [1] 1.95 mi (32:14 / mi) +20m 31:15 / mi

Scouting north campus control locations. Got some ideas from urban sprint at Flying pig.

Also adjusting the map using OOM in order to use some of our desired control locations, so thats fun :)

Note

4th/75, 4/4 to clear it. Not bad for being sick and it being so blasted hot.

Island Lake Score - O by Tom, Tim, Lauren. 32 controls, 2.5 hour time limit.

3rd day of feeling under the weather, so I wasn't sure if I had the oomph in me to run for 2+ hours, but I've been sick in the past and tend to forget about it once I'm out in the woods. Planned a mostly counter clockwise route with 5 controls on the east side of the map that would be easily dropped if I ran out of time.

First 5 went mostly well. Exiting 42 I decided to change my route a little and pick up 66 on the way. Easy enough, but then I had to remember that later on. The depression was very wet contrarty to the map, and I was on the wrong side of it, so went swimming about knee deep rather than going around.

First bobble was 71. I took the road and cut in south. I found the depression fine but couldnt find the flag. Luckily Cooper was also looking and spotted it half way up the hill. Possibly reflected in the clue that reads "East of depression", but I dont think its centered in the circle, and I'd expect "East of depression to be all the way on the top, not halfway up. I failed to see that and only saw "depression". Lost maybe a few minutes here.

Got back on my track and found the next 3 ok. Long slog up a sandy hill, but it was unavoidable from any direction.

Then my plan took me to 67, which was poor planning. I guess I had disregarded the features, and it was on the other side of a stream. Climbed up the hill and tried to find the flag from the top, but it was too thick to see much, so I went back down and waded in the creek to look from the bottom. Got almost chest high, and it was very slow going, then I had to slog back up the hill to actually punch. Slowed me down a lot and was tiring physically and mentally.

Then i failed to follow my lines again and bypassed 56 depite the fact that I could see it, thinking it would make more sense to pick it up on my way back around. Picked up 77 and then headed to 49 per my line, and when I got there realized I had forgot about 56, so i had to back track to pick that one up. Should have just picked it up when i first saw it.

58 was fine. headed to 76 I got to the fence and got a little frusterated as it was a real fence not easily jumped. So i headed to the N end and found 76 fine, but question the motivation to send people across the train tracks for one flag, not a big fan.

Next 4 went fine, opted for the swamp cross to help cool down as I was getting quite hot. Happy to be out of the badlands and into the shaded woods, but still quite hot.

Got a little turned around headed to 51, cut in too early, lost a minute or two. Swamp crossing again to grab 73, and then back across. Was imprecise to 72 and spent a few minutes wandering before I found it. Same with 60 as it was unclear where it was in the long reentrat.

64 almost put clearing it out of the question. Failed to see the game trail and WAY overshot, as the swamp was very dry so I didnt realize I had entered it. Very green and bush bashy, not very fun. Eventually decided to give up and move on, but hapened on the flag on the way back and then found the trail route.

Decided to pick up the pace and go for the clear, aided by a road run, but also out of water and none available on this loop. Considered stopping at the start but it was too far out of the way so decided to suck it up. Picked up 31, 65, 55 on the way to 74 so I'd have them and the ability to decide based on time. Decided to go for it and grabbed 74, then back on the road. Cutting it close at this point but decided to go for 50 after 48, figuring it wouldnt put me over 5 min late, so it would be a net positive. 50 and 32 on hills were a brutal way to end, but huffed it downhill to the finish and squeaked in with 2 min to spare.

Lots of fun, hindered by heat and sickness, but overall pretty happy with my performance. I could do without the 2 or 3 (67, 64, 71 particularly) that were in dark green, but other than that some really nice spots. I think TTL did a great job for their first meet, and had great turnout.

Note

switched out trainer tire, bring on the nice weather!

Note

Need to replace the furnace, needs to stay off until it is. Bring on the nice weather!

Why would anyone want to be a homeowner? In the 3 years at the current place we've had to have replaced: The stove, the water heater, the furnace, and the windows. Should also have the AC and carpet replaced but not happening yet. And we had a gas leak and a water leak. Home-owning sounds terrible. X-P
