Sleepy Hollow Rogaine, 12 hour, solo

We decided to go solo on this one to continue improving our orienteering. Syd skunked me, but thats ok :). Cold morning, but it warmed up to around 50 for most of the day. Camping wasn't too bad, we brought plenty of extra blankets.

Started off planning completely independently, and didnt even discuss our routes at all. We started off in different directions, so figured we wouldnt see much of each other. First 2 controls went well for me, 3rd , #55 was my first taste of ohio hills. I had underestimated them, and decided dead reckoning was NOT the way to go all day, so I adjusted many of my route choices for the rest of the day. Not sure 45 was worth the huge down and up for 40 points, i think this was the steepest hill of the day. Happened to meet up with sydney at 61, we had completed the northern section in opposite directions, and decided to go together to get 71 and 81, which was fun, then split up again when we got back to 61 to complete the other half of the loop. First real bobble was to 31 (go figure), where i missed a trail turn off and had to go almost twice as far, but it was along a road so it wasnt too bad. Hit 31 about 4.5 hours in just after I had run out of water, so it worked out perfect. From there I hit the eastern arm and my knee started bothering my right around 6 hours, just after hitting 62. Continued on to 72 and 82, and when I turned back is when my knee started to get really bad - of course right when I was about as far as I could be from the finish. Hobbled by way back along the trail which wasnt too terrible since it was largely flat. Hit up 31 for water again (~3.5 hours later, out again), and finished out the walk east back to the finish. It got dark just after I found 53, and my frist one in the dark, 43, wreaked havoc on me. I couldnt find the E-W trail and I think there were a number of streams that werent on the map. continued working my way west and after deciding to give up on 43 I did eventually find the trail. I thought I was way past 43, but when i got to a small stream I decided to take a quick look. Turned my head and saw the reflector, so that got me back on track Finshed out with 42 and 52 - by 52 my knee was incredibly painful, so it took me 15 minutes to hobble down the hill to the final. Checked in early because it was clear anything else was just going to be pure pain. Bummed I coulldnt finish it out, but I'm pretty happy with how everything went - only one really hiccup all day.

My original plan had me doing the southern bit and skipping 50 and 63 entirely, which would have been tight, but if i had been able to jog some roads and trails I may have been able to do it, or at least the first half of it. Twisted my (already twisted) right ankle 5 times in the first 5 hours, and each time was excrutiating for a few minutes, but cleared up and felt fine until the next time. Luckily the second half was clear of twists.

Final order: 41, 31, 55, 44, 75, 54, 45, 61, 71, 81, 66, 65, 31W, 74, 40, 62, 72, 82, 31 (again), 53, 43, 42, 52.

Clothes: long sleeve t, bike jacket, zip offs, compression socks, trail shoes. Note - WEAR GAITERS IN OHIO (green briers EVERYWHERE). Changed around 4 pm, and dry clothes were good once it got dark.

Ate: 2 clif bars, 1 gu, 1 peanuts, 1 bagle egg sandwhich, 1 bagle chicken salad sandwhich. Was dragging at the end, but Im not sure I ate anything in the last 2-3 hours.
