Haven Hill Night-O by Rick

I didn't go in with high hopes, having a slight cold, and stiff competition with Igor, Mark, Cooper, Tony, Syd all showing up. I think this helped me actually, I didn't put any pressure on myself.

Planned a CCW loop to clear the course. I didnt specifically identify bail points, except I was ending with 4 30 pointers, and I hilighted #8, 15, and 23, and wanted to be at those at 0:30, 1:00, and 1:30, give or take a few min.

Started with 33 with a small group including Syd and Tony, but to 63 it was just Tony, and we stayed together for the first 4 or 5 maybe. Got a little stuck getting out of 72 going S of the pond W of it through some thick stuff, but not too bad. Bobbled 61, overshooting and not finding the pond there, Im still not sure if it was there at all, had to reattack from the trail a second time and lost a good couple minutes.

77 was probably my worst bobble. I think I was on the spur just E of the correct one, but the weeds were over my head so I couldnt see anything. Wandered for a good 5 minutes, and was heading back to the trail to either give up or reattack when I stumbled on it. I was at 48 min, and only control #9, so I cut off 4 in the middle and headed straight to 64 to get back on time track.

2 bobbles in a row shook me a little bit, so i slowed down for the next few. Bobbled again on 53 and had to reattack from the trail. realizing I was falling behind I then picked up the pace for the NE section. Skipped 44 on the fly even though it would have been easy - went 55-66 and then north. Also skipped 37, but given the time i had left over at the end I think i should have gone for it.

Final Order: 33, 63, 32, 41, 71, 72, 42, 61, 77, 64, 74, 53, 75, 54, 52, 76, 55, 66, 56, 67, 39, 47, 34, 31

Despite a few big bobbles and a foggy brain I barely took 1st over igor due to a 50 point time penalty. Lots of people complained about not being able to pick out countours - another thing I think helped me, since I dont navigate off countors as much as I should, i relay on trails, water, and vegetation more. The 3 things that are less reliable than contours...

Night-O might have to be in the spring next year so I can pass off the Night Owl before skipping town :/.

Carried small camelback, half full with water and the headlamp battery. Wore pants with pockets for easy access to gu/flashlight/coughdrops. Used spare handheld flashlight a few times. Didnt eat anything, but i'll blame the cold.

Paddling 1:49:37 [2] 7.52 mi (14:35 / mi)

For some reason I couldnt steer sterning to save my life, had a few short lapses that ended up 90deg from where we were headed. Swtiched positions and W4J did a better job, so I think we'll stick with that config. Maybe slightly slower than Syd/Andy, but we figure if they stop to nav or punch we can catch up. Fig is short on paddling anyway.

Overdressed for the near 70deg weather! Expecting crisp and cool.

SMOC Pontiac Lake

Mr. W was very nice and left the flags up so we could run the red course a day late, after getting back from vacation. Rained for the first half.

Not sure if my mind was still in Hawaii, or already in Albany, but I was not focused on orienteering from the start, and it led to some stupid mistakes and poor choices, so not my best performance.

No major mistakes, but very few really clean legs either. Took a wrong turn on the trail from start - 1... 1-2 I thought I executed pretty well, going through the campground. 10-11 was just too long for me. I actually stayed pretty focused and didnt make any major blunder, but i felt like I was running a trail marathon, not an o meet. Even still, i had a pretty slow split, so clearly there were better ways. I took the S trail to avoid the mess of trails in the middle, and took shortcuts through the woods on the big loops.

Got stuck in some thick stuff between 13 and the finish, and took a very subpar route through/around it.

Waimano Falls.

Its weird going down first and then up. It was raining but still quite warm, and the trail was super muddy, so not ideal for right before a flight. Took it pretty easy to try to stay not sweaty (unsuccessfully) and not muddy (unsuccessfully). Then kind of anti climactic after the other falls we had seen. Back up was actually much easier.

Diamond head crater

Half paved trail, half dirt and roots, then half stairs. This is the most popular hike on oahu, probably due to its close vicinity to Honolulu, and the views it offers. I really enjoyed it even though it was busy and developed. Another one i would do often if it was in my backyard.

Swimming 1:00:00 [1]

Snorkling at Hanauma. Saw some really cool fish and schools of fish. Went out 2 different times, for probably 30 min plus each time. Not active swimming, but with the waves had to do something or you'd run aground

Manoa Falls Hike.

2nd most popular hike on Oahu, and I'm not surprised. The trail was pretty nice, and fun the whole time - the most jungle like place we encountered. And then it ended at a 100+ ft waterfall that was very pretty, even though it was only a trickle.

Half trail run/hike, half road run, right from our rental place. The trail aprt was really fun, and if I lived here I would totally do this all the time. It looked like there was an option for 2 different loops, one in each direction from where we turned around, would have loved to explore more, but it was getting dark. Did get to watch the sun set over the mountains, which was really pretty. Then Road run loop next to the beach.

Kailou'ou Ridge trail.

One of my favorite hikes, kind of reminescent of the adirondacks. We traveled through 3 or 4 different biomes which was kind of cool in such a short hike. Started out in a foresty place with lots of switchbacks, then it switched to a pine forest with huge pine trees. By the time we got to the top of the ridge it was much more jungley. We had the summit to ourselves for the most part and there were some great views, although the lighting wasnt the best for pictures - cloudy gray and bright sun reflecting off the water. Very fun hike.

Hiking 55:25 [2] 2.51 mi (22:05 / mi) +254m 16:48 / mi

Hike on a paved trail up the ridge and out the point to look at the lighthouse. The trail was quite busy, and not super exciting, but there were some great veiws.

Leisurely hike out to Kaena Point. On the way out we took the shore route, which was part trail and part climbing over and around rock formations. On the way back we took the inland route which was a jeep trail.

Very windy and a really high surf. Did see 2 endangered Hawaii Monk Seal on the rocks at the point.

Peach Mountain Farsta by Igor.

Fun format. 2 loops with a map exchange, several controls that appeared on both loops and then different controls in between, so by the end everyone should have done all the same legs. Mass start, but not knowing where people were headed meant no following.

Really clean run for me. A slight bobble on #10 (74) first loop going out the wrong spur - silly because this was one of hte biggest features on the whole map. One other smaller bobble on #8 (71) second loop - got pushed too far west without realizing it. Other than that I hit everything just about right on. Slowed down for the harder looking ones and paced, ran most of the trails and the open woods when things were easier.

Wore shorts and long socks, and my knee caps got pretty shredded. Ate a clif shot just after half way, and drank 2 cups of water at the map exchange while planning my first couple legs of the second loop.

1st place! Woot Woot. Beat cooper by 5 min and Mr. W by a bit more. Format favored me with no super long legs for me to lose focus on, and lots of opportunity for trail running. Red distance but a mix of difficulties

Scouting Red. Got about half done. A little thunder scared me into throwing in the towel early. Ended with about a 2km trail run

Will I ever learn to not wear new clothes out in the woods? Probably ruined another pair of running shorts... And I wore my shirt inside out, so now it has burrs on the inside... Reasons I shouldnt be allowed to leave the house without Syd.
