Orienteering 1:10:00 [3] 3.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Put together a short orienteering course in the Arb for syd on her birthday. 7 controls, yellow.

Note

Went to the doctor to get my knee looked at. Runners Knee, nothing is seriously messed up. Got a cheap knee brace, and it was recommended I get fitted for nicer ones for both knees. Also got horse pills for muscle relaxing and anti-inflammatory and a referral to PT. Got the OK to do Sleepy Hollow despite issues, just taking it easy until then.

Exercise bike 30:00 [3] 9.3 mi (18.6 mph)

Pains me to be on the exercise bike already but between my schedule and my knee it seems like the best option.

Program 2, level 10

Rock Climbing 45:00 [3]

5.9
5.10-
5.10+ tall
5.11- tall 1 fall 3 takes
5.11 not very far

Bouldering, didn't make any more progress on 2 v3s I'm stuck on

Hiking 1:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (30:00 / mi)

Jacobs corn maze. Traverse city. Had to hit all the "extra stuff"

Hiking 2:00:00 [3] 3.5 mi (34:17 / mi)

Sleeping bear dunes. Did the dune trail and then some of the short hikes from the overlooks. I'd love to bring my bike up here next year and do the paved bike trail, looks like it's a decent distance and some nice hills.

Road Biking 10:00 [3] 2.0 mi (12.0 mph)

Flat tire... Always when I'm in a hurry. Walked the rest of the way in, caught a ride home

Trail Running 40:00 [3] 3.0 mi (13:20 / mi)

Hill workout at the arb. Ran the loop once but my knee pain picked up, so I hiked the second loop and then gave up. Knee pain persisted through the evening after icing and stretching. I'm guessing it band syndrome, similar to my right knee last summer. Going to take a week+ of low Impact and lots of stretching, hopefully will be ok by sleepy hollow

Road Biking (Commute) 26:00 [3] 5.0 mi (11.5 mph)

Rock Climbing 45:00 [3]

Started with bouldering. Finished one of the v3 I hadn't been able to put together, started with figuring out the second half, then put it all together.

Switched to top rope, had a bit of a rough time. Failed and 11-, did a 9 but fell once, but I was avoiding foot switched to make it tougher. Did a new 10 with 2 takes. Then to a 10 I had struggled to start and did the whole thing with lots of falling!

Tried out a few more v3 bouldering problems but my fingers and arms were shot.

Orienteering 1:38:00 [3] 4.0 mi (24:30 / mi)

ILRA - Orange

A high school friend of mine was in town visiting, and he said he was up for trying out orienteering. He's not much of a runner so we went with orange, and I let him do the navigating, just gave some suggestions here and there. Didnt really have any trouble, he's pretty good with a map. hopefully he gets into it down in st. louis!

Road Biking 1:40:00 [3] 27.0 mi (16.2 mph)

Been a long time since we went out on the road bikes. Decided to take advantage of all of AA being at the football game to enjoy some fall colors. Parked at the S end of Huron river drive and did a loop up and around Hudson meadows and back. A little chilly at 47F but we were mostly dressed well, just toes got cold. Nice ride, I miss my road bike sometimes

Rock Climbing 50:00 [3]

Switched to top rope
10+ tall wall, red point perfect
11 struggled up half, but farther than I've gotten before
10 tall wall perfect

Back to bouldering
Same v3
New v2 took a couple tries

Orienteering 1:31:08 [3] 5.4 mi (16:53 / mi)

Waterloo orienteering red.

No major problems, a few minor mistakes that I'd like to get rid of. Ran trails and roads and it went well. Some knee pain continuing from yesterday, hoping a few days off is enough to remedy it.

Adventure Racing 3:49:00 [3] 25.0 mi (9:10 / mi)

Artprize AR, Grand Rapids

Wanted to give another sprint a try to see how we could do. Had a very different feel from all the other races we've done, being downtown, but we still had a lot of fun.

Strategizing ahead we decided we would probably do better mentally and physically if we ran then biked, so that's what we stuck with when we got the maps.

Took off in a slightly different direction than a majority of the teams, so we didn't have to wait to punch in at the first couple controls, which was nice, especially with so many people starting (~100 coed). Hit one of the challenges early where Sydney had to describe a piece of art and I had to go in and identify it. Basically the blind leading the blind. Next challenge was finding 7 signs with leaves on them, we found 9, everything looked like a leaf! After those the challenges started going a bit better. The 19 foot checkpoints downtown with 5 challenges took us about 1:40, 7 miles, and we were feeling pretty good.

Hopped on the bikes, and this was a little frustrating having to deal with traffic, lights, pedestrians, etc. very different feel. Made our biggest blunder on the bike because we were relying on road names and missed a turn when one was different. Added probably about a mile, and resulting in me crashing on a flat wide road with no traffic, not really sure what happened but I landed on grass and stood right up, so it was all good. There challenges went will, including the random kayak for about 5 minutes where we zoomed past a number of teams.foot orienteering section of 5 checkpoints was painful, we both face planted a few times and got some pretty big bruises, just rushing trying to make up for our blunder. Bike + foot section took about 2 hours, 18 miles with the other 4 challenges and 19 total checkpoints.

Came in 5th 2 person coed. Winner beat us by about 25 minutes. We figure all the blunders probably cost us 10-15. I'll take responsibility since syd let me be navigator for some reason.

Thanks Mark for the great race!
