Real Orienteering race (You Yangs) 2:57:30 [3] ** 20.1 km (8:50 / km) +450m 7:57 / km
spiked:15/17c shoes: Innov-8

Maxi 3 hour at the You Yangs. I chose to go to the newly mapped northern part of the map out of curiosity, and merely by this choice reduced my potential score significantly. Lowlight was about 11 k into the course when I judged that 150 meters through boneseed was a reasonable short cut. That 150 metres took seven and a half minutes. Highlight was escaping the boneseed by reverting to rock climbing up a cliff face at, I estimate, grade 5 standard. Ripped the map whilst chimneying. I can't imagine what Rob Fell went through to map this, and I worry that some his map boulders will eventually be used as checkpoints. Scary stuff. Its good terrain for downhill mountain bikers. Leave it to them.
Black Range is looking an excellent alternative.

Real Orienteering race (Kangaroo Gully) 59:40 [3] 8.57 km (6:58 / km) +210m 6:12 / km
shoes: ASICS GT-2700

The Annual Mars Barr Cup on Kangaroo Gully. History seems forgotten. This was once the Mahers Barr Cup, and I felt obliged to turn up so that at least one member of the honoured families was in attendance. I also had to take home the controls for Julie and her Kooyoora event next week. So I might as well take the chance for a run, even if it was a score event. I don't really look forward to these style of events, and I have run way too many times on Kangaroo Gully to feel at all excited about the location, but I quite enjoyed today. Maybe that was because the temperature rose over 15 and I managed to pretty much run a perfect race, reaching all my planned 15 minute way points almost right on schedule. As a result, I managed to outscore Nigel who deceived himself into believe all controls was possible, and consequently ran a less than optimal control set. I'm amused by that because Nigel is clearly running faster than me.
This turned out to be the last event for my current favorite shoes. My foot popped out one side signalling imminent retirement. I'll have to scratch around for something for the three hour tomorrow. This must be the reason why I have a stash of almost dead shoes.

Running 35:00 [3] 6.0 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: ASICS GT-2700

Another face plant, but this time I can blame the cord strung across where the footpath should be. Trouble is someone has cut up a block into three and rather than continue the existing footpath, has gone for the cheap lawn option. I'll take pleasure in wearing a path where the footpath should be.
