Real Orienteering (Macedon) 1:22:52 [3] 9.3 km (8:55 / km) +240m 7:54 / km
shoes: Innov-8

First orienteering event in a while... combined with a visit to my father in hospital in Melbourne.
I started this event knowing my left leg injury wasn't all that repaired. As a result I knew I had to run cautiously and not risk any sudden unexpected movements. The obvious strategy was to keep to the tracks as long as possible. Turned out to be a sensible strategy anyway.
S,1,2,3 Basically kept to tracks, and despite the obvious extra distance, the splits showed it was a sensible choice.
4 Kept to track until almost north of checkpoint. Headed in through pines. Nice and soft underfoot. These days I like that feeling. A little uncertain here due to unmapped wind row.
5 Shortest route to track and kept thus until only 150 metres from control
6 Went adventurously off track, believing north south would be easier running through pines. It wasn't. But I fluffed this up due to mis-thumbing where I was on track network. Probably lost a couple of minutes.
7 Same error again.
8 No drama
9 Confused in circle. Couldn't get the veg and wind rows to make sense.
10 Highlight of course was the stepped tunnel under railway!
11 Kept to track then gully that led almost to knoll. Easy navigation. Don't understand how so many made a meal of this one. The track and gully route choice was the only one.
12 Tried to follow track but didn't find it till almost beyond it. Ran down gully onto control.
13 Realised the track approach a little too late. Easy control really
14 Ran backwards to take the track option. Again, seems to have been sensible;e
15 Found it but I wouldn't have mapped it.
16 Confused by green on map and ground. Lost a minute.
17 Uphill track grunt, overtaken by Obewan as though I was standing still.
F
Tough area, but I enjoyed my experience out there. Taking it slow and on tracks seems to have aided that enjoyment. Must be a challenge to set a suitable course here. Interestingly, I didn't get round to looking at the results. Too many other discussions going on.

Four more hours mapping. Its taking 8 or 9 hours a square k in field work and half that again at the desk. Thats fast.. thanks to the LiDAR.
