Slow flat run to test the calf strain from two days ago. Git through it, but not likely to try hills or forest runs for a little while.

Real Orienteering race (Fiddlers Green) 42:47 [3] *** 6.06 km (7:04 / km) +35m 6:52 / km
spiked:8/13c shoes: ASICS Kayano 21 Blue

Fiddlers Green. 5.5 k straight line.
The flattest course for the year. For certain. The skill here is to run a straight red line yet aim off just enough to ensure you know which way to head when you hit the linear erosion features. I can't say i did this very well today. I think that is partly my fault and partly the distortions in the map. It took many points to get the GPS route to line up. I might process some lidar for this out of curiosity and send to Chris if its interesting. I suspect he will quickly beaver away to redraw the map with minmal field work if its merited. Oh how we become accustomed to the benefits of reliable base maps. Fiddlers Green was based on a vague 1:10,000 black and white map. Goodness knows where the contours came from.

A test to see how much I have lost since the post Easter bike crash and the pf flare up. Answer - about 20 seconds a kilometre. Should get that back in a month if injuries allow. Mid winter is always a challenge in regards to exercise enthusiasm.

spiked:13/14c shoes: ASICS Kayano 21 Blue

State Series at Joyces Creek. Rex used the best part of the map and used it reasonably well. He even got the climb accurately on the course description. I managed 5 metres shorter than advertised. Most setters underestimate climb it seems.
The choice was between 4 k or 6.7 k. Four seemed too short so I went for 6.7, though I knew it 1 k too long for the pf. So it turned out to be. The last kilometre was quite painful but I just ran harder to finish as soon as possible. Then got down on hands and knees a few metres from the finish control and waited for the pain to subside. I think my days are numbered at this length of course. John Sheehan said I should accept reality. At the moment I really know he is right. If i can choose a 5 k course I get 1 k of warm up and then can run the course and finish just before pf complains.
Only one minor error. Pretty much red line all the way. This must be one of the fastest maps in Victoria, and from a Bendigo orienteer that is a statement. Just pity I am not similarly fast.

Funny story of the run. I was very determined to red line the long leg to 10. Pretty much stuck right on the line thinking this was efficient, but in the latter half of the leg, came to a bend in the line, and so silently cursed the course setter for spoiling my best red line of the day.

5.3 straight line. Lyell Forest North
After two less than par controls, reverted to sticking on the red line. It worked.

6.6 straight line
Clinkers Hill. MTBO on foot. An MTBO map. In parts a running course with tracks clearly the best or even only option. This found me out. Glad to have lasted for an hour, though if I was fitter it wouldn't have lasted that long. You know what I mean.
