Rock climbing 2:00:00 [3]

Mt Arapiles. Ordinary Trees.
The weekend was a reacquaintance with a past enthusiasm. Climbed well within my potential, and just sought the feel of the rock, the exercise walking to the cliff with heavy packs, controlling anxiety at exposure and remembering the mechanics of nut placement and belay structure. At the end I am looking forward to something a bit more challenging.

Note

Watched the Kurt Wallander film last night and was amused to pick the crucial clue... an orienteering map on the seat of an abandoned car. The owner of the car was dead, but he had left a map on the seat of the car with a training run marked on it. Someone retraced his steps and found the hideout. But why did he leave a second copy of his planned route on a map in the car. Thats an attention to safety that few I know follow.
Notable aspects of the plot that are revealing about the place of orienteering in Swedish culture.
1. The training run was for a 55 year old man and was judged to be long enough to take a day to walk. Treated as unremarkable.
2. A standard local copper was quite confident of his ability to follow the route on the orienteering map. He wasn't even asked if he thought he could manage the navigation. It was assumed.
3. A standard local copper was eager for a day out walking the route by himself in the forest. He only became nervous when someone shot at him.
Lets assume the map is found by an Australian cop in this fair land.
1. Wouldn't know it was an orienteering map.
2. Wouldn't be able to follow it.
3. Wouldn't want to follow it.
Unless the car was found in Canberra environs by a copper by the name of Bluett.

Running 34:35 [2] 5.4 km (6:24 / km) +80m 5:58 / km

Shortened skraplands. Just pushing the distance a little further than yesterday. Now to see whether the knee holds up.

Running 20:00 [3] 3.5 km (5:43 / km)

Back too soon. Bailed half-way home and rang for a lift.

Note

Still sore in the knee. This is becoming a regular condition. I expect to be running again Thursday.

Note

Mr Singh said: "The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running."
If someone runs a marathon at age 100, advice they offer is worth listening too. ;-)
Gotta stop thinking negative thoughts about my knee.

Running 1:04:08 [3] 10.04 km (6:23 / km) +150m 5:57 / km

An exploratory run through Sparrowhawk. Some off track work demonstrated that the green on this unmapped area demands respect.

Running 37:37 [3] 6.6 km (5:42 / km) +105m 5:17 / km
shoes: Asics

Same run three times in a row, but the late Saturday morning timing is a little novel. I couldn't quite believe the time as I didn't go purposefully faster. But the GPS download shows I didn't drop any of the course in recording the time. Ilka explained it as progression from stage 2 to stage 3 which sort of makes sense.

Running warm up/down 12:33 [2] 2.08 km (6:02 / km) +50m 5:23 / km

Warm down run just to make sure I have had enough.

Running 40:38 [3] 6.71 km (6:03 / km) +105m 5:37 / km

Skraplands but in the afternoon today. Significantly faster which is further evidence of the value of sleeping in rather than arising early for a run. K Ross stage 2. Probably a week only.

Running 42:10 [3] 6.71 km (6:17 / km) +105m 5:50 / km
shoes: Asics

Full skraplands run. I'm pretty happy with this loop now. Bugger all bitumen and concrete, good amount of climb and interesting terrain for centre of Bendigo. Challenge now will be to keep fit and not lose motivation. Jools will hopefully be out of hospital tomorrow, but it may be 3 months before she is running again. No conjugal runs, or motivation to run to keep up with partner's fitness. Not likely to be any events to aim for a while. Might head north for a social time with Geoff Peel and others in Newcastle and take in the 5 days. I like my time with that crew. Orienteering will be secondary though. In a general sense the last statement will be accurate as well.

Oceania Relay.
In the end, this was the most disappointing race of the carnival... because I made no significant errors and still came 12th in time. That is around my position all carnival. I could explain the problems in the other events, but for this one I am forced to the obvious conclusion fitness is lacking. I sort of knew that already, but I rubbed my nose in the obvious with this performance.

Time for a Bruce style analysis. Not a memorable carnival in terms of personal performance. Didn't crack a top ten position in five races. I think this is my worst effort in a decade. The injuries and illness were part of the problem. Keeping the mind off other matters was perhaps a contributing factor as well. Organising and running doesn't mix for me.

Very excellent carnival with two themes. Darren Meeking showed what can be done with tremendous effort and good organising skills. Canberra showed what to do when you are burnt out by carnivals.
Distance a guess.

Real Orienteering (Marginata) 1:04:22 [3] **** 7.6 km (8:28 / km) +220m 7:24 / km
spiked:16/17c shoes: Innov-8

Oz Long. Going well until I lost concentration in the open paddock and skipped control 11. Unlike the previous day, I realised and ran back. But race over again. Lost the pack and ran the rest by myself. Took the rest of the course with somewhat less vigour. Hard to keep enthusiastic. Think I finished 14th.
Distance a guess.

Real Orienteering race (Badja) 16:26 [5] **** 1.9 km (8:39 / km) +60m 7:28 / km

Oz Sprint.
I have wondered if it was really possible to meet the sprint event conditions in forest terrain. This was the best attempt I have seen so far. Far better than my course setting for the Easter prologue a few years ago. A complex course with 16 controls in 1.6 kilometres and a couple of 'long legs'. Hats off to Mr Lawford the course setter.
Despite the great course, I had two reasons for my disappointment. I made a thumbing error and skipped control 11. This was to become a theme of the weekend. My other disappointment was realising that quite a few locals would not think this real orienteering. I have been told that in setting these style of events in Bendigo I'm only setting courses for elites. I think a lot of veterans had fun today.

Black Mountain again, just to prove yesterday wasn't a fluke. Caswell Drive to top in 16.55. That's a bit over a minute longer than my times five years ago. Wish I had this hill in the back yard.

Running 48:46 [3] 6.57 km (7:25 / km) +246m 6:15 / km

Black Mountain. It would be a ramble except for the climb. I think it hits 20% in some parts of this run. I managed to get to the top without stopping, so I'll claim I'm not past it yet.

Note

I'll get round to logging this when I can face it. At the halfway point I was in third position. I then had a total brain fade and panic and threw away nine positions. Not much to say after that.

Real Orienteering race (Rowdy Flat) 49:30 [4] **** 3.8 km (13:02 / km) +60m 12:04 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: Innov-8

I had been looking forward to this event for a long time. Pity about my personal performance. As the note says, I had a great first half, and was in third position for a fleeting moment. I made the error of following tracks, missed an intersection and lost it. Made the stupid panicked mistake to relocate from the edge of the map. Game over again.
Despite this, I am in awe of the event assembled by Darren. Historic!
Despite my error, I would have wished for a longer course and a greater navigational challenge. Not saying I would have had a better result, just would have had more time out on a map that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Distance a rough estimate but way further than it should have been.

Map raised an issue that is contentious across international orienteering. According to the rules, this map should not have been mad. It is not legible at 1:15,000. But the punters seemed to enjoy it. So maybe demand is for a form of orienteering not supported by the rules.

Real Orienteering race (Warby Spurs) 1:20:47 [3] **** 7.0 km (11:32 / km) +270m 9:40 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Innov-8

Another lesson in why not to combine competition with organisation. Was busy with parking and bogging issues, when I realised start wasn't far away. Mind not really with it. Managed to hold it together for first control. Lost it on second. Race over. Another error on the slop above the finish but by then it was academic.
Distance a rough estimate.
I think this is a great area. The low visibibility but runnable terrain makes for a true navigational challenge. Personally, I find Kooyoora easier. Discuss.
