Note
(rest day)

Saved my rest day till now, based upon the likely weather. The thought of running this morning was less than attractive given the heat. The usual niggling aches and pains after a series of consecutive running days gives accord to the decision. Slackness reigns. Just have to pack and hop in the car for the mystery trip Julie has organised. All I know is the picture of the house that she showed me on Xmas morning. There was a tall tree nearby so I am deducing it is near the coast or the ranges. Hopefully cooler than Bendigo.

Note

Turns out we were off to Warburton. Stopped by at the Britannia Creek Hall to revisit the scene of our wedding vows. The garden where we did the deed is now quite unkempt. The hall where we held the very low key reception os dilapidated and scheduled for demolition. The reserve land is being sold.

Run before the painting obligation. I thought if I worked extra fast at it yesterday I'd get through two days of scheduled painting in one. Nope, it just meant the schedule was adjusted.

Jools ran with me today and wore her brand new Garmin. It measured 6.37 and my earlier model 205 measured 6.45.. I assume the difference is because she cut corners in an effort to catch up ;-}. Nope, before I am accused of treachery, I will amend that explanation to the fact that 305s capture data every 4 seconds while my older 205 is on a one second data capture option. So it was the Garmin cutting corners.

Award for thoughtless shit of the year: The twit who dropped a sloppy turd on a rock next to Lady Bath Falls at Mt Buffalo. I suppose they were also responsible for the cigarette butt floating in the pool. I am not sure if these sorts of bogans are trying to be obnoxious or if they actually believe that the 500 metre walk from the car will mean no-one else is ever likely to visit the spot before their turd is rotted away.

Running 1:33:00 [3] 15.0 km (6:12 / km) +190m 5:50 / km
weight:80.4kg shoes: Saucony

Standard Marne route, accompanied by Ilka, and part way by Jools. Joolsulled out before the climb and went back along the channel. Something about not wanting to do the climb. She and Ilka did half the Big Walk up Buffalo yesterday while I car shuttled. Maybe Jools figured that was enough, or maybe she had decided one hill run trying to keep up with Ilks was enough for a week. I was blissfully ignorant. Anyway, it has been two years since Ilks moved to Hobart and it showed in the run this morning. First, she was in no hurry to start early before the day heated up. Next, se seemed to think that an 80-90 minute run would be possible on drinking water before and after the run. I suggested borrowing one of our water packs but she declined. I secreted an extra water bottle in my running pack, and it was used before the end of the run. Not by me. Ilks was also unimpressed by the heat.. and I was thinking it was a reasonably mild for a run starting at 10am. The final sign was when we hit the climb up to Marne. It normally takes me about 7 minutes. I was over 20 seconds behind Ilka by the time I reached the top. All that running on Mt Wellington shows. I think this explained Jool's decision.

Note
(rest day)

It fell to me to drive and keep Ceira company while Jools and Ilks ran from Mackeys Peak up to the chalet. I think it would be the way to do thye big walk.. ie forget the bottom half.

Tried to cobble together a run at Dederang. Not a great place for running.

28 degrees at 8.am! A very warm run for this early in the day. I think we will all regard a cool change as a wonderful Xmas present.

Up before the sun. By this time of year I have to accept the inevitability of such running conditions. But I'd still rather be sleeping.

Running warm up/down 32:13 [2] 5.7 km (5:39 / km) +60m 5:22 / km
weight:79.8kg shoes: Saucony

My body rebelled at the idea of fast running.

Note

I haven't really given the 5-days a thought till today. Didn't even know where it will be happening. Certainly hadn't looked at entry forms or anything. So out of curiosity I decided to check out the event information to see what I was missing. I found the following...
The vegetation has thickened, quite significantly in parts, since the last important event on this map in 2006. Every effort has been made to update vegetation mapping. Fallen timber complicates the running challenge further. The going is most difficult in lower lying areas adjacent to watercourses. It will be a tough day in the office! Full body cover recommended.
Yes, well.

Its a struggle to keep the weight just static in the week leading up to Xmas. Why the need to organise so many parties? At least the time for this run is dropping steadily with each week.

Lovely cool air to run in this morning. Perhaps why it was much easier to run at a reasonable speed.

Running long 1:45:50 [3] 15.22 km (6:57 / km) +410m 6:08 / km
weight:79.6kg

Started at No. 7 but ran the other direction, to the top of Mt Herbert, then along the ridge, down Hunts Gap Road and back along the channel, some terrain running to the highway, then back to No. 7. It was a tougher run than the normal Sunday fare. Its very nice along the ridge past Mt Herbert.

Same run as my fall on Sunday. Looked very carefully for the root I fell on, but couldn't see it! It looked enormous last week as I lay on the ground in pain. Someone must have been kind enough to remove it.....

Very slow run. I think I'm now as slow as when I started training 15 years ago.

THE PROBLEM WITH ENDORPHINS
From knees

The first fifteen minutes of this run was very slow, a hangover from Friday nights event. From there the body settled and by 40 minutes the signs of an endorphin flow were evident.. a rare event lately. I was running in semi-trance mode in the only real downhill section of this route when I tripped on a root. The results was a little bloody. After a minute on the ground I decided I had to get up and run while the endorphins were dulling the pain. That lasted for about 15 minutes. The last ten minutes of the run were dominated by the pain. The injury looked more impressive than was revealed after a serious clean up in the bath.

Real Orienteering race (Kangaroo Gully) 1:57:17 [3] *** 15.3 km (7:40 / km) +345m 6:53 / km
spiked:19/20c shoes: Saucony

The 14th Annual Twilight 3hr event. The race started at 7.00pm. As usual, it is only a three hour event if you take it slowly. By completing it in just under 2 hours I didn't need a head torch. That was a pity, so next year I will start and hour later- a 2 hour event starting at 8.00pm. That will give an hour of darkness. It would be a near perfect event then. I only found out after I finished that Jymbo and a few others made that choice this year.
Was happy that my second hour speed was almost the same as the first hour.

Running 25:00 [3] 4.5 km (5:33 / km)
weight:80.6kg shoes: Nike Trail

Struggled around this rnorning trying to keep up with Jools.

With end of season celebrations approaching for our club, I was most impressed by the recent end of season event for the Vilnius orirnteering club as recounted by Evan.

"Indre's orienteering club breakup tonight out in the countryside, arrived pretty late and it seemed everyone was waiting for us to start their annual(weekly?/monthly? im not sure) club beer/vodka-o...there was a lot of lithuanian being spoken and i couldnt really worked out what was going on but before i knew it i had been tied to some poor girl, had a beer and shot of vodka poured down my throat and had been sent out into the forest with a map to do a three-legged night-o while being half cut... pretty good fun.. nearly got a kidney stone by the end though, couldnt work out how to say "can we please stop for a bit, im busting for a piss, ay" in lithuanian, to the girl i was tied to."
