Real Orienteering race (Smiths Reef) 33:09 [4] *** 5.34 km (6:12 / km) +140m 5:29 / km
spiked:13/17c shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascent II

Kirstens first training race, a 'sprint'. At 4.7 k straight line distance, thats some 'sprint'. Still, it was set for fast flow through controls and moderate navigation. I tried to run in the spirit of a sprint, and proceeded to make mistakes.. thumbing errors and missing controls. That they were placed on the ground didn't help me.... shows I was navigating for the flag, not the feature. But you can expect to see flags a long way off on this map. When I slowed back to standard race pace, it all came together again.

Real Orienteering race (Smiths Reef) 54:59 [3] *** 8.09 km (6:48 / km) +145m 6:14 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascent II

Kirsten had set up four by 2k loops as a start course. I didn't want to run an 8 k course, but had realised I needed a smany controls as I could get, so ran the controls as two large loops and skipped the returns into the start area.
Still messy on a few controls, reminding me not to be too confident come Easter. One major parallel error. Couldn't see how I could have made that mistake. Comparing notes with Ev afterwards, he made the same error, but approaching from the ridge, rather than gully. Maybe its a joint delusion, but we think the map might be just a little off. I'll check it next time.
Afterwards went mapping some more of peg leg gully.
Good fun on Kirstens courses, so was surprised when she told me it was her first course setting. Made me appreciate the chances that our Bendigo series gives for course setting. Most of our juniors have had experience by the time they leave Bendigo.

Hoping to feel up to some running this evening.

Running 43:57 [3] 8.5 km (5:10 / km) +70m 4:58 / km

Started slow. 5.45 pace. Gradually sped up. But when I got to 4.30 the hammy started quivering. So had to slacken off to 5.00 pace. Felt ok then.
Made the disappointing discovery i am in the Easter sart list as an M55. I didn't think I looked that old. Have asked for a reallocation, thereby giving some poor administrator an unwanted increment to their workload.

BARR'S 4B RECOVERY PROGRAM
Stage two of the famous Barr's 4B recovery program.
BROAD BEANS, Bike and Back to running.
Whether you eatthe beans or use them as a freezer pack is your choice. Oxoman does both with the SAME pack. I'm impressed.

The bike ride was fun, out on White's Ruins tracks, finishing pretty much dark. I reckon a Night, Nude, MTBO World Championship would be great. Lots of stacks, lots of injuries to the MTBOs and it would be a great spectator event because there would be no lycra and no-one could see the riders anyway!

Battlegrounds and bio-rythyms
Lake neangar. Right at the start the body said.. no, not tonight. I tried to ignore it. First circuit was notable for the sore ankles. This normally passes after 10 minutes. First circuit was at record slow pace of 6.25. For the record, that was over a minute slower than my easy warm-up lap on Monday night. And tonight didn't feel easy.
Ignored the ankle and timne and did a second circuit. That was only 6.00. Ankle felt better by then. So tried just a little bit harder... 5.30. Ok, lets get at least up to the speed of my rest circuit on Monday night. 4.50 and it hurt. Body wins. Decided that 5th lap was the last lap, just a warm down. No point in even trying any more. But body wouldn't even accept that. Half way through the warm down my left hamstring suddenly tightened and I knew even a jog from there was stupid. So in the end, the body won. Went home and introduced my hammy to the frozen braod bean pack.
Hard to believe how much difference two days can make. I think I'm starting to believe in bio-rythyms. I'll beleive the complaining body a little more readily as well over the next week leading up to Easter.

I needn't have worried. Yesterday's 'peak' has passed. Body did not wantto run this morning. Julie was doing intervals. I ran at as best a tempo as I could, managing to just catch up to her just as she started the next interval.
Less than 12 hours since my own interval session. I suspectthis didn't help.

Pre-Easter hubris training
Showered myself in inverse glory again. Training course on the M21E Day course at Mia Mia. I brought a copy of my map from last year, with a different course on it. Drew the new cours ein blue. Jim placed contol flags. I ran out after him. Kept coming to the site to find no flag. Started to worry about being so incompetent this close to Easter. Then noticed Troy running at right angles to me. Stopped, studied the map and realised I had been running the wrong course on the map. Things fitted well then, but I reverted to the old course a couple more times.
Ankle started to hurt like it had at the end of last weeks rogaine, so called it a day after the first loop and went mapping at Maldon. Found more detail in Peg Leg Gully. Things were going well for two hours till my concentration started waning. Twisted my ankle pretty well on a rocky mullock slope.Forced to sit for 10 minutes till the pain and pins and needles subsided. Called it a day for mapping as well and went home for ice. Met a tame white cockatoo at the car. More accurately, it scared the bejeezus out of me by landing on the roof with a thump and a squawk, less than a metre from my face. That was the highlight of the day. Things had better look up by Easter.

Real Orienteering race (One Tree Hill) 48:49 [4] *** 7.12 km (6:51 / km) +210m 5:59 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascent II

The second of the Bendigo street to bush transition events. The C and D courses may have been transition, but the A and B courses were certainly all bush. Steady pace, still with that 'post-rogaine' feel. So wasn't too unhappy with the time. A straight line pace of 7.45 for One Tree Hill isn't too bad for me.
A reasonable course for a novice course setter. The transition concept is a good first setting experience. A few of the legs were alittle like street O on tracks, but that is part of the concept. The main problem he found was new fences and tracks on the far side of the map. With our large stable of maps in constant use, we haven't yet worked out how to maintain the maps in this constantly changing terrain.

Real Orienteering race (Porcupine Ridge) 5:53:30 [3] *** 33.63 km (10:31 / km) +1200m 8:55 / km
spiked:35/37c shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascent II

This rogaine was meant to be in Gippsland. Gippsland is not good orienteering terrain, but rogainers seem oblivious to terrain qualities. because of bushfire it was shifted to Glenluce area. Three orienteering maps were stitched together at 1:20,000 scale: Glenluce, Mt Franklin Gorge and Porcupine Ridge. I couldn't miss that. Julie was committed to a half marathon so I conned Obewan (Craig) into dragging me along. We ran on the Sunday. Now this was a good example of why timing is everything in a rogaine. Derek ran on the Saturday. He normally can't wait till Sunday. The likes of Jared and other superpeople were busy with the Keen Adventure Race. After three day sof torture down at Anglesea, I doubt they would consider a 6 hour rogaine. And with Easter approaching, the top orienteers were only running for 3 hours. As a result, it was a weak field and we won. This might never happen again, so I will savour my Top Deck chocolate bar prize. We won by quite a bit. I won't mention that Jymbo, Bruce and Troy came third after running for less than half our elapsed time and scoring 1700 to our 2190. I also won't mention that Derek seems to have pipped us with his Saturday score. My excuse if I chat with him will be that it was hotter. 2 degrees can make 10 points difference..... please no reports from Blair telling me the forecast did not come true and it was hotter yesterday.
Seriously, it was great rogaining, but hard work. I was quite buggered at the end. No energy to help collect controls for the poor organisers. The other big news. Last I heard, partner Obewan hadn't vomited. Its a first. Every other rogaine he has, but thankfully not in my car. His spouse, the lovely Marie, is often less than impressed. I am quite astounded by this failure of tradition. We had both the household dog and the teenage daughter vomiting the day before. Both self-induced I'm afraid. One ate too much and one drank too much. The dog merited some sympathy.

A Bendigo Special . A traditional cross country course set in a mix of streets and bush and mining terrain. This was the sort of course that is now possible in the Bendigo terrain with our expanding map base. It's an outcome of the Bendigo Diggings Rush rogaine that I didn't anticipate. The idea is to provide a transition between street orienteering and orienteering in the bush. Unlike Melbourne, we can do this be using the same starting locations as for our street series. There were only 25 entry stubs on the board today, but apparently quite a number of the easy and moderate course entrants were in groups of 3,4,5 or even 6. So its too early to judge whether our experiement is a success or failure. What would success look like. To my mind, just onenew and keen participant would be success.
The course you ask.. well, straight line it was 6.8. But I measured 9.2 on the Garmin. No, not another Jymbo special. Its just that the route choice options provided in the streets required more than the usual extra distance over the straight line. I was reasonably disatisfied with my time of 57 iniutes. Evan rubbed it in by running about 41 and then complaining about poor fitness. We orienteers can be a bunch of whingers.
SOCIAL OBSERVATION
Its cricket grand final weekend. The start was next to the Spring Gully oval. The final leg of thew course took runners around the perimeter of the oval. The course setting allowed for a run straight across, but for some reason, no-one interupted the cricket. The sight of cricketers on the field and orienteers running around behind was there for both us and the cricket spectators to watch. A number of obvious differences. First, there is a lot more weight on the cricketers. None actually looked at ideal weight. Some were quite chubby. No. Fat. Second, the orienteering crowd also looked quite different from the cricket spectators. Besides the obvious kilos, the spectators spent the afternoon puffing and boozing. Its the first time there has been a pervading smell of tobacco at a local orienteering event. I now understand the fuss that VicSport has been making about 'Smoke Free' policies for sporting clubs. For us it is easy but pointless. For the cricket fraternity, implementation would be a very difficult challenge.

I'll stick to orienteering, though I think i could bat better than some out there today. It certainly wasn't A grade. That was at Canterbury Park in Eaglehawk. And yes, they were playing on a green carpet wicket.

A few days ago riding to work was a novelty. Today it was a chore. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact my sweating today didn't seem just exercise related. Julie is off work today with her virus. I'm hoping the sweating and wobbly head is just paranoia.

Lots of bike this week, being carless. Was starting to pedal at the lights last night when a couple of MAMiLs on road bikes shot past this lowly MTBer (and a cheap bike at that). I pushed a bit harder than usual over the next 2 ks and enjoyed the look on their faces when I was riding next to them down Cuneen St. Not before time I peeled off and headed for the single track between Maiden Gully and St Justs Point. I couldn't have hung on to them for much longer...
PS At least I'm not staking my dignity against the other sex like come correspondents on this blog site.

Last of the street-Os. The course setting was clearly tending towards bush orienteering, so the times were slower for everyone. I felt quite flat tonight. Probably the two hours riding didn't help. I mentioned this to Peter Searle and he responded that he was a bit sore from riding... 900 kilometres over the weekend in a 36 hour session. Apparently a qualifier to the Paris-Brest-Paris. I had thought that ride was something you did once to say you have done it. He is up for seconds!

Why its at the panel shop is an interesting story. I dropped Jim off at his place after the strategy day meeting. I was parked by the kerb outside his place, an d we were finishing a conversation. His neighbour across the street backed out of his drive way and reversed into the car we were sitting in. He was most embarrassed.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [3] 8.0 km (5:00 / km)

Was planning a rest day, but the opportunity arose to combine a trip to Melbourne with the MFR Monday easy run. Ilka was catering so we also ferried a cake. We were a little late. Exiting the other rels place always takes longer than planned. So it was straight out of the car and into the run. They run their easy runs harder than I do, so perhaps this wasn't easy, at least until i warmed up.
It was very pleasant running with such a great bunch of young people. From my perspective, even Blair qualifies as young. I couldn't help but compare this run with my own runs that are nearly always solitary. Even seeing another runner is a surprise. You have to dodge them at Prinny.

On the way home there was low cloud over the top of Mount Macedon. The lights were on the cross, casting an enormous artificial brokenspectre over the sky. It was very gothic.

8.8 k straight line course. The first 'official' Sludge event.
A real contrast to yesterday. Vague spur gully, incised by deep gorges. Soft underfoot in comparison, which my feet appreciated. They also appreciated the shift back to the trail shoes. Ran reasonably well. Felt slow at times, but so I should. Cooler weather. One error that cost maybe two minutes. A lapse in cencentration right near the end of the course. Not sure if I 'won' Sledge, because I'm not sure who qualifies. One rumour is anyone who runs faster than Prez on the day is out... but if I repeat that rumour I'm out. That was Phatmax's error.

Curates egg of a run.
Started without a compass, so went back and got it and started again.
Rolled ankle twice in first kilometre. Ilka is right about the lack of ankle support in the Sarvas.
Very sore feet by the two third mark. Feet don't like the hard soles. Evan is interested in this set of shoes, so I may sell them to him. I'm wearing trail runners again tomorrow while he tests the Sarvas. Lets see what he thinks.
Main problem was lack of motivation in the heat. By the fifth control I had decided I wasn't going to bust a gut today. So rolled around the rest of the course. No major errors, but a few messy moments close to seven controls. Julie beat me on four of those, and was messy on the other three herself. Early days in the season.
The good news....
Well, another great course on a great gold mining map. Thats two for the season already! Jymbos and the Lawfords... thanks. And it ain't over yet. To come are Petticoat Gully, Deadman's Flat and Creswick Diggings at SL level. Then in the local series there will be Jymbos Skins event on Diamond Hill and my Ironman on the as yet only partially mapped Peg Leg Gully. What a great year of gold mining.
Oh, and Liggo somehow left work and got to orienteering!

After running for a while, one experiences that wonderful feeling of an endorphin day. Running feels like floating on air. Your find you are fast when you check the lap time. ...

Today was definately not one of those days!

The aim was to do 4 or 5 * 1k intervals around Lake Tom Thumb. A strong southerly made for a cool temperature but also created a struggle when running south. That's not the reason for the endorphin drought though. It was that leaden leg feeling. After two reps I gave up and just jogged for two more ks..

I think I have 30 leaden leg days to each endorphin day. How does one change that ratio?

LIFE IN A LEVEL 4 TOWN
A different street O tonight. My personal aim was to cover 12k in the hour. An insignificant achievement for some. I'd be very happy to do this. For the first 20 minutes I was on schedule. Then it started raining. Light at first, but then heavier as the storm cloud passed over head. No plastic bag! In fact, no-one had a plastic bag. Bendigonians don't expect rain anymore! New skills and tactics came into play. Running with a stoop to try and protect the map. Map memory between shelter where you could read the map. After the rain passed, map folding gave way to map peeling. Thumbing the map took on a new meaning after the thumb erased one of the controls from my map. Missed it entirely. So the thumb went to dead areas of the map. People straggled in according to how much of their map was left to navigate from. Scores were quite low. In retrospect, I missed my chance to win. All it required was a map bag!

Running 37:00 [2] 5.5 km (6:44 / km) +60m 6:23 / km
shoes: Sarva - no metal

This was meant to be an easy run to wear in the new shoes. I was apprehensive of blisters. Some lessons learnt.
1. Lower heel counter. After 200 metres I had to change the lacing pattern from vanilla to something more complicated.
2. Less cushioning. After 700 meters I knew never to use these shoes for street orienteering. After that it was terrain running in the forest for the rest of the morning... well not quite.
3. Less ankle support. After 2.5 k I twisted my left ankle. Expletives rang through the morning forest. Any observer would have been wondering what was going on. Despite the initial pain, the ankle soon recovered and I ran off carefully. Fifty metres later I twisted it again. More expletives. After another ecovery, I headed very very carefully for the nerest even track and home by the shortest well graded route.
4. No hot spots at the end. But application of ice required.
I think these shoes will do for running in terrain. They may even be suitable for a rogaine. But strapping will be required. I'm not going to strap for my terrain training around home, so another pair of shoes will be required. At this rate, I'll be the Imelda marcos of running shoes.

Note

Replacing a lense of my glasses.
Not so simple. I have lenses that respond to UV light and transform into sun glasses. But apparently they change colour with time. Do I want to have different colour lenses. ... Maybe I don't want to lose what little facial symmetry I have. OK.. two lenses.
of course, with the cost of two lenses being so high, I notice its five years since your last sight assessment. At your age your vision will be changing quickly. Perhaps you should get a test first.... OK When can you do it?
In a month or so..... But what about the inconvenience now....
Solution. buy a pair of cheap frames with cheap lenses on the existing orienteering prescription. Pickthem up Wednesday.
And think about solving the empty expensive frame in the longer term.

"Season-opener' race at Boundary Creek. Strange title, seeing Bendigo has already provided two bush orienteering events... the Fowl and Fizz and Jymbo's season opener.
I'd had my premonition about today. Driving down to Tullamarine on Friday we spotted a number plate whizzing past us... GRUNT-O. We debated what a grunt O was. I thought it was steep country with controls successivley on hilltops and in deep gullies. Julie added the superb rejoinder... with window orienteering to block out the climb and the better route choices. She has the makings of a course setter! As it turned out, today was a bit of a grunt-o. Also not a day when I was to crown myself in glory. But then it never is. Mishaps, snafus in order.
1. Not ready to run when my start was called.
2. Ran to the last control of the last loop rrather than the first control of the first loop. You had to see the map to appreciate this was possible.
3. Arrived at where I thought the first control would be to discover nothing. Assumed I had mismarked map and continued. Assumption later proved correct. No point in wandering around as I had also misplaced my clue sheet.
4. At the end of the first loop ran back to the map area and redrew the first control. And picked up a clue sheet.
5. Had trouble seeing through my glassees. Assumed this was sweat deposits. So eventually stopped to clean them. Discovered I was missing a lense. Replacement prescription sun glass lense.......will not be cheap, assuming the appropriate mense is available.
6. Missing lense meant trouble with my gait. Couldn't judge my foot fall well, and kept jarring my feet. By the end of the race both were very sore.
7. Toward the end of the second loop I detoured to visit my very first control. It turned out i could have followed the novice course streamers from where I had thought the control was to where it actually was.
8, By the third loop my heart wasn't in the run. I struggled with limited enthusiasm. At the finish I reported myself as dnf. Strictly speaking I had dnfed. I declined the option of claiming i'd finished. Didn't really want my time up there on the results board. A surprising number of my peers had an even worse result than me.
9. After the race my physio (soon to be) daughter laughed at my shoes when I complained of sore feet. So I went and bought a replacement pair. Wirth that and the lense, it make sit an expensive race.
10 After the race I remembered that I has once lost anopther pair of glasses during an event (don't ask how). Ir was on this same map. And if there are typos here, then live with it. I only have my distance galsses. Its bloody hard to read the screen.

MTB (Not O) 42:00 [3] 13.2 km (3:11 / km) +120m 3:03 / km

Rest day in order. Went for a short adrenalin ride on the single track in Rocky Rises reserve. Took some air for the first time. I followed a track round and over a dam wall without knowing what was on the other side. Found myself and bike temporarily airborne. A first. After that i went mellow and rode to the local bottle shop and picked up a couple of ligyt reds before 8.00pm closing.

Running tempo 11:00 [2] 1.5 km (7:20 / km)
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Really hard to get going this morning. This is the slowest ever for this warm up route. At least it wasn't in the dark.

Running (Terrain fartlek) 30:00 [3] 5.55 km (5:24 / km) +90m 5:00 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Terrain fartlek a good choice of session for three reasons. In increasing importance.....
1. As close to the Easter terrain as i will find in Victoria. Northern part of Browns reef and Stumpy Gully maps.
2. Kept to the leaf litter as much as possible and avoided all tracks. My feet felt much much better than normal at the end of the session. A very good strategy to avoid injury.
3. A brilliant excuse to delay the start of the run until there was light... 6.45. Set the alarm for 6.30 instead of 6!
Despite the slow start in the warm up, I quite enjoyed this session.

Don't know why Iog this as intensity 2. Since I added the push ups and pull ups, the latter part of the session feels like a good 5.

The mid week easy run with Julie. With both of us doing the street O, our scheduling of easy runs coincides the following morning. Of course, we are now running in the dark. This gave me the opportunity to take advantage of my very very bright Silva LED headlamp. I responded to a driver with full beam headlights by giving him the same back. He dipped.
