Climbed to the bluff above the Carnarvon Gorge camp site. The result was a revelation as to how large this Central Queensland sandstone belt is and how many cliffs there are across it.

Tried to walk all the sights in one day at Carnarvon Gorge. It would have been feasible but for the plantar fasciitis. Called it quits leaving out the lookout walk. Its a very spectacular area, well worth the long drive (10 hours) from Tweed Heads where we were staying beforehand.

Oz Sprint Champs.
Three route choice errors early in the course. This is partly due to my lack of spring practice. I was in a panic early on. Wrong route to 1. Wrong rote to 3. Wrong exit from 4 to 5 (which the GPS didn't pick up). I seemed to find it hard to read the detail. Thats partly age. But it was also the map. The map reminded me of my first draft of the La Trobe Bendigo map. Everything was accurate... too accurate. My first La Trobe map was pretty much a tracing of the high resolution aerial photos. This resulted in quite a few stairs and paths being narrower than the mapping standard allowed. When Evan came back from the world uni champs in Spain he looked at the map and warned me I was repeating the problems with uni champs sprint map. The stairs in particular were too small. I redrew the map shrinking buildings to exaggerate spaces, stairs and paths. Today's map could have done with the same treatment. Sprint mapping is really tough. I remember I didn't even attend the first use of the La Trobe map at Easter as I was expecting the usual post sprint map dissatisfaction. Being controller for the next day gave me a perfect excuse. I appeared when the packing up was underway and heard no map criticisms. ;-)

The majority of time lost was through route choice rather than losing location.
I had to run course 2 due to time constraints, which is a pity. I would enjoy a Bendigo fixture with more of this sort of terrain. Might make my aim for the next year or three to make this happen. It will be quite a few years before the next carnival up here (not before 2021 or 2022 I think). I

Exploring potential granite terrains. Classic curates egg experience. No, a little girl with a curl experience. When it was good it was very very good. When it was bad it was horrid.
This looks really good terrain from the photo. To be fair, the total area of this block is 7 sqk and you would be lucky if the granite area totalled half a sqk.

Enjoyed the second red line race in the one weekend. One parallel gully error that cost a minute and an uncertainty that cost 20 seconds. Other than that, can't see how I can be faster other than being fitter and younger.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 9.0 km (16:40 / km)

Modest score. Probably should be satisfied after a 10 day break from this particular form of frustration.

Real Orienteering race (Lyell Forest North) 49:05 [4] *** 6.6 km (7:26 / km) +110m 6:52 / km
spiked:7/10c shoes: Salamon Blue

Lyell North. Classic red line terrain. Parts were slower than usual due to wood cutting trash on the ground. Three errors. Two 30 second errors and one proper error costing 2.30. Pity about the errors as I would have gone well under 8 min/k otherwise. Doesn't happen that often these days.
After the event went exploring in what will know be known as Lyell Central. It is rarely used due to the more obvious approaches and assembly areas being on Lyell Nth and Lyell South. Found an acceptable site which will go on the developing map web site in the next couple of days. Hope to actually run on this map next year now.
