Back, core and achilles 25:00 [1]

Absolutely excellent day to not be at work. I am condemned to looking out the window from my desk and imagining I was climbing under those blue skies.
1 PM

Running tempo 34:43 [4] 6.22 km (5:35 / km) +50m 5:22 / km
shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

Felt good running this one hard. I rarely get that feeling these days.

10 Honeysuckle Hills. First after dark session for winter season. But not raining. Also first session for year where breath condensation was visible. Won't be the last.

Running warm up/down 17:00 [2] 2.8 km (6:04 / km)

Run the various route choice options for my event on Crusoe. Picked one correctly but got the other one wrong. Seeing its the same leg in different directions on different courses, I was a little surprised.

Back into routine. Chilling reading today of a climbing death at Moonarie after a failed abseil.

Real Orienteering (Norfolk Hero) 45:45 [3] *** 5.63 km (8:08 / km) +90m 7:31 / km
spiked:10/13c shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

A low level local event. Ran the course with Julie, pushing her to run faster and spend less time standing still reading the map. She says she appreciated this but she may be being polite. Only one significant error, and a little waiting at controls.

Notable event as it was the first course setting by a young local still at school - Michael Loughnan. With some guidance from Colin he did a good job. Its an interesting counterpoint to the agenda item for the next bush committee.. how to blood new course setters... using SS events. Seems a risky prospect to me. Better to run more lower expectation events such as this one.

3 PM

Running 20:55 [1] 2.7 km (7:45 / km) +55m 7:02 / km
shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

Control collection for Julie's event next week. I think it will be a good one. I am keen to run course 1 rather than course 2. I think its the better course with longer legs to take advantage of the terrain and the trackless map. Should see its share of confusion in the terrain.

Rock climbing 1:00:00 [2]

More climbing with Ilka. Tried Tiptoe Ridge but arived to find four on the route and another five lined up at the base. Off to Mitre Peak to fin we were the 12th car. This used to be a quiet place.

Rock climbing 1:00:00 [3]

Teaching Ilka some climbing basics at Arapiles. Still a magic place, but more and more it looks like it is being loved out of its charm. Never have I seen so many climbers in one place. Camp4 in 1981 was bare by comparison. Spent the afternoon on Charity Buttress after using the binoculars to scope out an uncrowded spot.

Real Orienteering race 1:05:00 [3] *** 6.5 km (10:00 / km) +290m 8:11 / km
spiked:8/11c shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

By day three it was clear I wasnt likely to make up ground. 'Despite other trying hard to help me, I came 14th today, just for variety, ending up 13th overall. Not fit enough, not trim enough. Warnings for M60.
This map was the toughest of the three day. Started 2 minutes after Geoff Peel. Met at the end of the first leg (it was long). Had a fun match race for the next 6 controls. Again took the wrong route choice, then messed up 4. Pulled away on the long climb out of the rock towards 8. I think I also made the wrong route choice on 9. Then finally muffed the second last control in view of the finish. Such is life.
Lessons-
Not fast enough on the flat and downhill.
Didn;t understand the route choices on unfamiliar terrain.

Easter Day 2 Prossers Reef
Spiked each control today, but made a meal of the route choices. I started assuming the undergrowth would be like the previous day but quickly realised it was a fair bit slower. So I took the wide route for leg six. The locals all knew that the terrain in the flatter areas was faster than the lead up to the leg. I lost a couple of minutes there. I believe I also slowed in the latter part of the race or rather didn;t speed up as much as the competition. 13th again.

spiked:18/19c shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

Easter Day 1. Carwell's Labrynth
Not really technical terrain, but at times fast running of the ground was level. Slow in the ups and downs. I was somewhere at about 6th until after the 6th control. From that point it appears I didn't speed up compared with the competition. And then I lost 4 minutes on 11, a pretty easy control. Just shows what happens when the brain is oxygen starved. Finished 13th.

Golden Sandshoe at Clinkers Hill. A 1 hour score but I decided to get all controls and be late, thus ensuring that no handicap system could land me a win and organisation of this event next year.

Note

More viewer frustration. Live results fell over a couple of minutes before Evan was probably due to finish. They also seem to be having control box issues again.
12 PM

Running tempo 36:42 [4] 6.77 km (5:25 / km) +45m 5:15 / km
shoes: Asics Fuji Trabuco 2 (?)

The old Welsford run. I went reasonably close to my limits and managed to match a standard middle effort time of three or so years ago.

Thursday Apr 10, 2014 #

Note

Too busy to run today. Orienteering highlight will be watching live results of the EOC tonight. Evan starts at 10.48. Julian Dent 2 minutes later. Just like M10 days. Except this time the two are on different qualification courses. Looks like Bendigo style terrain! Gentle slopes and spur gully.
Postscript. Evan and Ross Morrison have their names in red at the bottom. We will now wonder what happened.

Course 2 9.4k as crow flies.
When one picks up an A3 map and sees that you are in one corner and the first control is in the diagonally opposite corner, you know you will remember the course for a long time. The leg was 3.4k straight line, but straight line wasn't an option. My route was a little over 4 kilometres, and that was mistake free. But wait, there is more... two more long legs. A very challenging and memorable event. This is the way to set courses on maps like Glenluce. Glad we took a punt and both entered course 2.

Smiths Reef. 4.9 straight line. Reasonably routine spur-gully performance. Maybe lost 10 seconds on navigation. The McGuckian challenge criterion fulfilled.

Not the usual, but a Creek run. Morning warm-up asserted itself. Kilometre times dropped gradually from 6.23 to 5.18. The 5.18 felt much easier than the 6.23.
