Running 41:15 [3] 6.5 km (6:21 / km) +70m 6:01 / km

Welsford Hill extended. First taste of summer. Perhaps an early taste of ageing as well. First problem was twisting my left ankle. After waiting 5 minutes for a recovery, I slogged on, only to later stumble into a face plant, donating skin from hands and elbows to the path. Maybe its time to wear light MTB gloves while running.

Real Orienteering race (Kangaroo Crossing) 1:20:00 [3] **** 6.5 km (12:18 / km) +285m 10:06 / km
spiked:12/12c shoes: ASICS GT-2700

Long race on Kangaroo Crossing. A relief after the controlling job the day before.
This was an ADVENTURE. Great fun.
Took it easy and kept in contact the whole way. No errors!. But I couldn't log this achievement till a week later, as Julie had the opposite experience and I couldn't be seen to skite. Still, despite the mistakes, I was a long way off the pace. Not fit and very conservative. I made on route choice error that cost me six or seven minutes, So concentrate don the fine nav I forgot the big picture.

Note

Sea of red on AP at the moment with injuries a plenty. None as impressive as Evans though. He is weighed down by the inability to do anything whilst surrounded by good orienteering terrain in Sweden.

Running 49:45 [2] 7.9 km (6:18 / km) +45m 6:07 / km

Note

Three hours on results, three hours mapping.

Note

Spent the day organising the Ironman, and learnt a few more lessons about what not to do. The result of one of these lessons is that the evening was spent rebuilding a useable results file. I thought I had my briefing covering all eventualities, but i was wrong. I think the main lesson is that this event is too much for one person to run.

Course setting (Rocky Rises) 10 [1]

Friday Sep 7, 2012 #

Note

Morn - drive back from Grampians.
Arvo - three hours placing controls for Ironman.
Evening (and early next morn) trying to create a handicap system for the Ironman. Why do I do this?

Walking 4:25:00 [2] 12.6 km (21:02 / km) +500m 17:33 / km

Up the Wonderland by a legally open trail. Along the top and then down a long closed 'trail'. It ended up being a descent via a recent landslide as the easy option.
Lowlight was succumbing to the tourist trap nerve test.

Walking 5:00:00 [2] 11.3 km (26:33 / km) +610m 20:54 / km

Major Mitchell Plateau and return. A closed track (as most seem to be in the Grampians. Its a tough walk, but no tougher for the floods and storms that justify the track closure.

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 6.4 km (37:30 / km) +100m 34:47 / km

Billywing gorge. Doesn't look far in the log. But the recorded speed is no sign of slackness. Billywing Gorge has been on our tick list for 30 years, so what better day than on our 30th anniversary. This was consolation for not trying another winter attempt on Bogong via Staircase. A worthy substitute. This is one of the secret gems of the Grampians. No tracks. Just follow thegorge as best you can.

Walking 1:53:00 [3] 6.73 km (16:47 / km) +300m 13:44 / km

Halls Gap to Grand Canyon and return via the closed track. Most of our walks during the week were closed tracks, but this was the only one where there were obvious reasons for the closure. Two massive landslide made progress challenging.

Real Orienteering (Smiths Reef) 1:10:00 [3] 8.5 km (8:14 / km) +100m 7:47 / km
shoes: ASICS GT-2700

Mind not in gear. Worst noodle in years. Went off map. Took ages to realise this error. Didn't finish event. (Well, I did, but not in a hurry and didn't record a time). Then had to collect controls.
