Real Orienteering race (Wildflower Drive) 1:04:00 [4] *** 10.75 km (5:57 / km) +90m 5:43 / km
shoes: New Balance Road shoes

Straight line distance 9.35
1 hour score on Wildflower Drive. A rarity.. a well designed score course. With 15 minute sto go had to make a choice of going for the high pointer and being late or dropping it. My calculations were about right, it was worth being late.
Lovely weather, lovely flora.. the pink and yellow tea tree were out in the eastern part of the map.

Running 22:58 [3] 4.4 km (5:13 / km) +20m 5:06 / km

Dodder Track

Running tempo 21:58 [4] 4.4 km (5:00 / km) +20m 4:53 / km

Dodder Track again, with some more effort. Feel very sluggish in the legs.

Note

Pictures are disappearing. Will have to try and run somewhere interesting this weekend.

Pool running (MTB) 49:10 [4] 14.4 km (3:25 / km) +130m 3:16 / km

Decided to give the feet a rest from the hard ground. Julie's bike was free after she came back early to clean the wounds from a spill. Took her bike out on the gnarliest track on Browns reef and gotthe adrenalin going a bit.

Running 45:50 [3] 7.0 km (6:33 / km) +100m 6:07 / km

Rocky Rises forest block

Tuesday Sep 26, 2006 #

Running 31:00 [3] 5.8 km (5:21 / km) +30m 5:13 / km

Dodder Track area. For Bendigo, its a softer track, which certainly helps the legs. The gold dust flowers are almost gone.

Running intervals 8:40 [5] 2.3 km (3:46 / km)

2 * Lake Neangar with 3 min rest. No more as stomach and guts started telling me to stop.

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.3 km (5:13 / km)

Monday Sep 25, 2006 #

Running hills 42:12 [3] 8.8 km (4:48 / km) +120m 4:29 / km

Twice around the Welsford hill circuit. No scenery of note for a change. Had to imagine it.

Note

Planned to get to the top of Briggs Bluff and Mt Difficult today, but the weather was much worse. Stayed in the tent and then played music for 5 hours instead.

Running long 1:30:30 [3] 9.4 km (9:38 / km) +440m 7:48 / km

Ascent of Briggs Bluff from Roses Gap. Gave up at the crest of the ridge (see cloud level in photo) when the view disappeared and the wind was wild. I didn't like the idea of an injury in those conditions. It's been a great week of runs in interesting terrain.

Running 42:40 [3] 4.4 km (9:42 / km) +200m 7:54 / km

Terrain run/scramble on Mt Hope near Leitchville. Necessary relaxation after a morning spent presenting research on water trade to a room full of local government reps in the Murray Darling Association. Most common phrase... I can't have an opinion on that that at the moment. Not hard to do that as most questions took 5 minutes each and sounded more like statements from aspiring political candidates than anything else.
Nice terrain. Photo will appear soon. Pity its so far from Melbourne.. or even Bendigo. Would be very complex navigation on tough terrain.

Note
(rest day)

No time really. But planning an afternoon run tomorrow at Bald Rock near Leitchville.

Three more here.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 4.4 km (5:41 / km) +20m 5:33 / km

Took a few photos of the wattle carpet. May put a link here tonight. It was extremely windy and unseasonably hot. When the ironbarks start bending, I get out!

In honour of rob's comment about poetry, and the strong wind, here is a ripper by McGonagal. It just goes to prove most poetry is bad.

The Tay Bridge Disaster

Beautiful Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That ninety lives have been taken away
On the last Sabbath day of 1879,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

Seven equally execrable verses removed due to an attack of good taste. But here is the last.

It must have been an awful sight,
To witness in the dusky moonlight,
While the Storm Fiend did laugh, and angry did bray,
Along the Railway Bridge of the Silv'ry Tay,
Oh! ill-fated Bridge of thSilv'ry Tay,
I must now conclude my lay
By telling the world fearlessly without the least dismay,
That your central girders would not have given way,
At least many sensible men do say,
Had they been supported on each side with buttresses,
At least many sensible men confesses,
For the stronger we our houses do build,
The less chance we have of being killed.

Running warm up/down 26:00 [2] 4.0 km (6:30 / km)
(injured)

Running long (Hopping on my left foot) 1:00 [5] 0.0 mi

Was a minute behind Clara, so I decided to jump up and down on my left foot for a minute. It was harder than I thought. In fact, by the end it was intense. The second hand got slower and slower and slower, and then Julie started haranguing me to jump higher and higher. It was my left leg, so I think it convinces me I am now off the injury list.

Running warm up/down 26:00 [3] 4.4 km (5:55 / km) +20m 5:47 / km
(injured)

The Dodder track circuit. Slow run to help the hamstring recover. The gold dust wattles were out in a magnificent display. The whole forest floor looks a carpet of yellow.

Running warm up/down 19:00 [2] 3.45 km (5:30 / km)
(injured)

A little more loosening up after an afternoon at the desk.

Sunday Sep 17, 2006 #

Running long 1:37:00 [2] 14.8 km (6:33 / km) +100m 6:20 / km
(injured)

Legs felt even tighter. Must be a footballer. The run was a long warm up followed by a long warm down and nothing in between.

Course setting (Lockwood) 1:10:00 [2] ** 7.1 km (9:52 / km) +115m 9:07 / km
(injured)

Placing controls. Map inadequacies became obvious by the second control so from then on I did extra distance checking and double checking and even remapping. Of course, I didn't go back and check the first control and I had placed it in an unmapped gully. A bit embarrassing. It sthe thrid time I have set a course here, and its been pressure each time with map corrections and general uncertainty under time pressure. Its the second time I have had a control in an unmapped gully here. Conclusion. Stop setting courses here and spend the time mapping it properly instead. The next big project.

The distance in this log is accurate, the time is just my guess of a reasonable approximate of how much time was spent travelling rather thinking or tieing.

Running 43:00 [3] 6.9 km (6:14 / km) +70m 5:56 / km
(injured)

Run in the twilight and dark. Slow by necessity. No headlamp.

Thursday Sep 14, 2006 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Not really injured, but hamstring so tight I am afraid if I run I will injure myself.

Wednesday Sep 13, 2006 #

Running intervals 18:48 [5] 4.2 km (4:29 / km)
(injured)

Pyramid- 400, 600, -800, 1000, 800, 600, 400
Right hamstring felt tight throughout.

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 2.1 km (5:43 / km)

Tuesday Sep 12, 2006 #

Running 47:00 [3] 8.5 km (5:32 / km)
(injured)

Why do my legs feel like lead for 47 minutes? Still, the carpet of gold dust wattle looked great.
In retrospect, the leadness is my legs protecting a damaged hammy.

Real Orienteering race (Spargo Creek) 1:34:16 [3] *** 9.8 km (9:37 / km) +350m 8:10 / km

Its been a long time since I was last at Spargo Creek. Perhaps that's a good thing. The advertised 300m climb turned out to be 350m, or I misread the event information. The killer was the last small loop that starts within sight of the finish. It had 90 metres climb. Ouch. Despite the simple terrain, made two errors of significance. One was a loss of concentration, but the other was 4 minutes looking for the first pit in the bracken. Nice to get out in the forest though.

Note
(injured)

Didn't really notice much at the time, but clearly I strained my right hamstring area today. That cruel last loop must be to blame!

Saturday Sep 9, 2006 #

Real Orienteering race (Sedgwick) 1:01:00 [3] *** 6.9 mi (8:50 / mi)

Felt tight in the hamstrings, slow in the legs, there is a race tomorrow and I had to collect the controls afte rthe event. So took it a bit soft. Given how I feel now, probably should have just collected controls. Might pike tommorrow and just put out controls at Lockwood and do a bit of mapping. The map improves a little with each event. Time to do some gully erosion.

Running 46:00 [2] ***

Collected the distant controls on Sedgwick. There are a lot oc contours on the map!

ERSATZ ORIENTEERING

In response to comments about the stupidity of 'foot' as a descriptor of orienteering..

Its orienteering. Full stop.
Everything else is ersatz orienteering.
If it has to be something else, why not 'shoe' orienteering? Its no stupider. Sorry. Its just as stupid.

No, let's just start referring to all the other versions by the generic of E-orienteering and leave the advocates to work out what the e stands for.

Running 34:00 [3] 5.5 km (6:11 / km) +50m 5:55 / km

As the lady says, running with spouse and catching up. But it was not all slow and gentle. When she started recounting moments of family tension, the pace upped dramatically.

Note
(rest day)

Work day went till midnight. Running disppeared from agenda.

Wednesday Sep 6, 2006 #

Note

Woke this morning to a very strange phenomena. Water is falling out of the sky. It has been since 10pm last night and shows no sign of stopping soon. I'm not sure if its safe to run in these conditions as it is out of my recent experience. I'll do some research before I make my decision.

Running hills 23:00 [5] 3.4 km (6:46 / km) +300m 4:42 / km

10 ascents of a hill at Warrenmang Winery while my work colleagues were on a winery tour. Estimated height was 30 metres. It was probably a bit too steep for the purpose, but it was available.

Running warm up/down 14:00 [2] 2.8 km (5:00 / km)

Minimal warm down. Don't ask about woarm up. That was the first 3 hill repeats. they hurt the most

Running intervals 12:50 [5] 3.45 km (3:43 / km)

Running warm up/down 18:10 [3] 3.45 mi (5:16 / mi)

Sunday Sep 3, 2006 #

Running long 2:10:50 [2] 20.5 km (6:23 / km) +250m 6:01 / km

Maiden Gully to Crusoe return. Really really slow. Yesterdays fast race in the heat took more out of me than I realised.

Saturday Sep 2, 2006 #

Real Orienteering race (Axedale) 47:25 [5] *** 7.1 km (6:41 / km) +160m 6:00 / km
spiked:9/9c

Realised this was to be the fastest event of the year, so set out to run hard for my best speed of the year. Went probably a bit too hard early on. Went into anaerobic mode after trying to stay with Toph. End result still good for me though.

Note
(rest day)

What better way to celebrate spring than to take a rest. Actually my knee felt a bit sore. If I had a bike I might have been tempted to ride. But thank goodness I don't so I didn't! Looking forward to super fast Brown's Reef tomorrow. I think it smy favourite map in the Bendigo immediate circle.
