First proper long run since New Zealand. First Sunday morning in mild temperatures. Climbed Baw Baw and then headed out along the Alpine Walking Trail to Mt St Philliack. Returned along a closed trail. We learnt why it was closed. More walking than running. Lovely morning. Long drive home though.

Baw Baw. Sort of a mix of street orienteering (read ski-runs and long way round being quickest) hill climbing (read ski runs) and orienteering. Two small stumbles on controls and two significant ones. Biggest mistake was the first control. I went straight through the snow gums. Learnt from that and tended top take the long way around after that. Even ran backwards out of control 21 and did a loop around the roads and got ahead of a train that left the control at the same time. Best thing about the day was the mild temperature. I will go back to this locale.

Map scales-
I am sorting out north lines at two scales. The 1:15 lines didn't look right so I thought I'd check up on other maps. Went to the map archive (pile of maps on filing cabinet in rough chronological order, but only including maps I found interesting in the past few months. Quite surprising. Going backwards from today-

West Bay 1:7,500 Middle
Rotonui 1:10,000
Smedley 1:10,000
Manga Pirau 1:5,000 Middle
Osgiliath 1:7,500
Fusilier 1:7,500
Rowdy Flat 1:7,500
Kangaroo Crossing 1:10,000
Piney Ridge 1:7,500

After that the timelines gets gappy, but those randomly in the rest of the stack are mostly 1:10,000 with a 1:16,000 (You Yangs) thrown in. Its quite a while since I ran on a 1:15,000 map.

Running in Crusoe with purpose. The access saga continues, but maybe there is finally a solution. The management has put a road through the area we were unable to use as a finish chute because it might damage native veg. Its amusing in retrospect. Took photos this morning of road building equipment working on the previously precious native veg. Ha ha ha.

For further amusement. Heavy machinery building our finish chute.
