This was my best ski of the year so far, and frankly (unless I make it up to the Far East on Larch Hills next weekend), I don't see anything rivaling it.
Went with Alexander up to
McCulloch Lake Ski Area, about 45 minutes from UBCO (so about the same distance away as Telemark). Somehow, neither of us have skied here before, despite 75km of ski trails and a whopping 75km of snowshoe trails.
Guess how many cars were in the parking lot when we arrived at quarter to ten in the morning. A grand total of three. The trails were absolutely stellar, conditions and grooming excellent, and almost no one on them. A nice mix of rolling terrain, as well as some longer striding hills.
This also looks like it would make an excellent orienteering area. Having a solid parking area and lodge with toilets is not to be undervalued, and the terrain is good as well. There was a broad mix of forest densities at different ages of clearcuts, a fair number of water features, some rock, and a moderate trail network. Tons of area, gotta go check my contacts to see if there is any LiDAR for it - even a kartapallautin would be good.
Here are some pictures from the ski, please let me know if they don't work. I've switched how I am doing pictures for my training log (Dropbox was rather glitchy with embedding pictures for some reason).

Recent Clearcut - Note how they are replanting almost all lodgepole pine to replace that killed by the pine beetle. I am surprised they aren't planting more of a mixed forest in case the beetle comes back, but I'm not a forester so what do I know?
