Running 1:08:18 intensity: (1:03:51 @1) + (4:27 @2) 6.62 km (10:19 / km) +236m 8:46 / km
ahr:135 max:163

Easy tromping around Postill with Alexander in snow varying from 2 inches (few and far between) to around 1.5 feet (a lot more of it). Mix of high stepping walking/sinking with some running on the plowed road.

Convinced him very quickly that this is a good OART venue, with good promise of forest orienteering training if we can get our hands on the LiDAR that was flown of the area this past fall.

Figure 1: Random lodgepoll (or might be ponderosa, couldn't really tell from where I was - I only know from their cones) pine tree on the edge of a clear cut at the top of where we were exploring. We opted to use the lower chunk of hillside without the patch logging for OART.

I got docked marks for not being sufficiently redundant in my figure captions and figure introductions in my biochemistry lab, and am rather peeved about it at the moment.

Running 42:00 intensity: (38:00 @1) + (4:00 @4) 5.0 km (8:24 / km)

Drove over to the backside of Knox Mountain through magic estates to go running around the upper part of Knox and get some intervals in up to the summit. Planned on doing 4x2 minute zone 4. Warm-up went pretty well, but feeling pretty nauseous throughout the first interval, recovered a bit before the second, but really felt awful during the second. Last time I felt that nauseous was the Classic Sprint at Ski Nationals in Canmore (in which I did barf, profusely). Felt like I wasn't really able to push either, barely got my heart rate into low 180 toward the end of the interval despite the hill (normally can get it that high without even trying too much).

Couldn't get rid of the need to barf, so bailed on the last two intervals and just did a slow jog around. Feeling a little better now (1 hour later), but still pretty rough.

No GPS track cause had an issue with my garmin syncing thing because of an internet connectivity problem, but don't want to troubleshoot and fix that now - focusing on midterm tomorrow morning.

Here are a couple of picture I took during the warm-up before my phone battery decided it was too cold to work.

Stationary Biking 40:00 [1]

Had to stick around the school this afternoon to finish off collecting some spectra for my chem 335 lab.

Then got home with 20 minutes to spare before the new Orienteering Canada Cup Committee meeting thingy. We started to get things started which was good.

Basically - had to leave training for pretty late after dinner and didn't manage to do much.

Note

Ok, this gets personal now. I started working on a school maps today in Open Orienteering Mapper, and when I tried to do a declination lookup through OOM it links through a US government lookup service. Which of course is down right now. https://governmentshutdown.noaa.gov/

Blasted nuisance. Have to go to the Canadian Version!

Running 1:19:42 intensity: (2:24 @0) + (51:16 @1) + (26:02 @2) 10.31 km (7:44 / km) +340m 6:38 / km
ahr:141 max:170

Was down in the south of Kelowna for church anyways this morning, so right after mass went drove another 8 minutes down the road and ran in Myra Bellevue. The trailhead was gated off, but lots of cars parking along the road just outside it (makes me wonder why they close the trailhead in winter?).

Got about 15 minutes into my run before my right foot started hurting again - very frustrating. Stopped to stretch several times throughout the run. Conditions varied from hard packed, to slightly packed with my foot slipping out all the time.

Really nice day out, the clouds burned off so it was really bright and sunny.

Beautiful ski up at Kelowna Nordic. Really worth the drive to get up above the Valley Cloud:

Right foot issues has resurfaced a bit in the last part of this week - rather frustrating.

Didn't get around to uploading this to my personal site and embedding - took the cheater route and posted a picture to Instagram:

Stationary Biking 25:00 [1]

Finished my lab an hour early (it was supposed to take 4+hours) Alexander and I nailed it with good data in 3 hours flat (including the 30minute blab to begin the lab). Meant I got home at a relatively decent time to get at least a bit of activity in.

Strength 10:00 [1]

One of the things I discovered over christmas while working on my right foot issue is the ongoing imbalance between my legs still stemming from my surgery 3.5 years ago. One of the main training goals for the spring is to balance that back out without injuring anything.

Running 1:18:58 intensity: (34:08 @1) + (20:50 @2) + (24:00 @3) 11.02 km (7:10 / km) +305m 6:18 / km
ahr:145 max:182

4x6 minute zone 3 intervals with our MRADD Run Club (not the best name acronym, but at least Alexander was there to add a vowel).

Went pretty considering I haven't done many (any) running intervals in quite a while. Had a bit of pain in my right foot with the usual injury thing - but it dropped off to nothing after interval one (which was awesome).

I hate it when labs run long - at least this was the longest one of the semester for this course.

Roads are so good that I rode to and from school today - only got back at around 6:45 after the lab.

Easy recovery orienteering around Vernon checking out some potential OART locations. Look like we have our schedule mostly finalized now - just a couple more sets of permissions to get.

Skiing - Classic 2:27:43 intensity: (22 @1) + (9:32 @2) + (1:32:08 @3) + (45:41 @4) 32.57 km (4:32 / km) +523m 4:12 / km
ahr:165 max:185

Reino Loppet. Wax sucked - iced up like crazy espescially on the first lap where I was constantly slapping my skis, and had to take them off and scrape twice. Rather frustrating - but still a lot of fun to get out!

In other news, my weight loss via snot rocket program is still on track.

It's just really hard to do anything after leaving for school at 7:25 and getting back 8:10 to make dinner. Wednesdays suck.

Running 1:22:31 intensity: (18 @0) + (50:53 @1) + (31:20 @2) 10.58 km (7:48 / km) +275m 6:54 / km
ahr:144 max:168

Run with Alexander (the other 3/5 of the running group bailed, but we bailed last time so I guess that evens things out). We skipped the intervals and went exploring instead. Some good steep banks, ponds, roads and trails. Really nice to get out.

Note

Finally decided that I would apply for JWOC and wrote up my application. Just need to proofread and submit now.

Note

My only class tomorrow just got cancelled ... I guess I am writing up labs all day then... yay?

Strength 15:00 [1]

This day disappeared faster than expected - a good chunk of the day not in class was spent moving around furniture for my landlord (not logged as strength - I actually did some strength), and the rest on various school assignments. Will be better tomorrow with our scheduled interval session.

Note

Well a Bakker family team just signed up for the Lewiston Ultra this fall. Should be a blast!

Note

Finally finished up the XC Skiing BC Champs maps. Now back to school work, deciding whether or not to apply for JWOC (and writing the application if I do), and maybe (finally) starting my next Toronto map later in the week.

On another random note, it seems my flag counter has disappeared for some reason. I opted not to sign up for an account when I created it, so all that data is lost. Oh well I suppose - might set another up at some point.
11 AM

Skiing - Classic 1:44:34 intensity: (1:25:00 @1) + (19:34 @2) 20.24 km (5:10 / km) +396m 4:42 / km
ahr:153 max:176

Really really nice classic ski up at Kelowna Nordic in which the grip wax did not work, then it did work, and then it did not work again.

The entire valley is fogged in by this really miserable gloomy cloud that is hovering about 100m above the valley bottom making the day rather miserable.

But up at the ski hill it was a stunningly beautiful day.

Little White mountain towards the right of the image

Got a bit of a later start to the ski then I meant to, got halfway up to the hill and realized I forgot my skis, so oops. Oh well - I didn't want to do that lab today anyways.

So I guess the moral of the story is if you are feeling low, get up high?

Note

Spent much of the day working on Course Maps for the Cross Country Skiing BC Champs at Larch Hills in early March. Most of the way through it now - have all my lines done in OpenO Mapper, just finished getting all my course stats and elevation profiles produced (mixture of QGIS and Excel with some manual edits to fix the chunk that isn't covered by the DEM (and a couple of glitches in the DEM)). Now just need to combine the two data sets together tomorrow and make it look pretty.
2 PM

Running 1:01:57 intensity: (49:57 @1) + (7:00 @2) + (5:00 @3) 8.78 km (7:03 / km) +275m 6:06 / km
ahr:148 max:173

Nice run on the upper part of the Mission Creek Greenway. Really busy at first with a lot of dogs, but apparently they do not go more than 1.5km up the trail. Although maybe its because that is where the climb starts that they turn around. Lots of practice with up and down steep slippery (icy) stairs on that part - good fun.

Really glad I wore the spiked Arctic Talons - trail was a frozen sheet of ice for the most part.

Foot held up well throughout the run.

Cool hill along the run with interesting layering of rock. Has a fancy name, just can't remember it right now. According to the sign it is unique in the world, except one similar formation in New Zeeland.

When biologists get bored...

Random pond at the side of the trail with a nice reflection and some melting ice that looked kinda cool

Cut about five minutes from the run time when I was playing around with my phone camera.

ahr:152 max:175

Skiing up at Kelowna Nordic. Started out with the mays, but pace was too fast for me, so dropped off the back and cut it a little short.

Bad news: I am not in shape, and am still recovering from the last bit of this cold.
Good news: Foot never got above a 1 on the pain scale. I made it through 12 hours of labs this week - now I just have to go write them up (and do the prelabs, etc.).

Still feeling rather sick, but definitely getting a little bit better. Made it through 3.5 hours of labs today without dying and didn't eat it on the ride back home after either - so that's a plus.
